College Football Final Rankings
Fans choose Harrell
Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell has been named the AT&T player of the year in college football, an award chosen by fan vote.
Harrell is the second straight winner from Tech. Flanker Mike Crabtree won the honor last year. Harrell, who passed for 5,111 yards and 45 touchdowns this season, outpolled Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, Texas quarterback Colt McCoy and Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford.
Tech football 12th in major polls
Texas Tech finished the season ranked No. 12 in both of college football’s final major polls released Friday – The Associated Press Top 25 and the USA Today coaches poll.
The Red Raiders had been ranked in the top 10 for the last 13 weeks of the regular season, but dropped out in the aftermath of last week’s 47-34 loss to Mississippi at the Cotton Bowl.
In a season full of firsts, the No. 12 final ranking wasn’t another milestone. The program’s highest final poll position was 11th after the 1973 season, a Tech spokesman said.
The Red Raiders finished 11-2.
Tech hires new assistant track coach
Texas Tech announced the hiring of Roy Williams as the new assistant track coach.
Williams, a former all-American at Texas Christian University, will be in charge of coaching the sprints and relay teams. He has spent the last three years as associate head coach at Texas-Arlington where he was in charge of sprints, relays, jumps and hurdles.
Before arriving at UTA, Williams was head track and cross country coach at Fort Worth All Saints Episcopal school and has coached several UIL and TAAF state champions in addition to an Olympic qualifying relay team and all-American hurdler last year.
As an athlete, Williams was a two-time Olympic trials qualifier, four-time all-American and 13-time all-conference runner at TCU.
