Raiders’ problems aplenty in loss to Cardinal

Back to the drawing board.
While Texas Tech head coach Pat Knight took the blame for Sunday’s 111-66 loss at Stanford, the fault doesn’t lie solely with him.
In his first year as head coach, Knight has wanted the Red Raiders to play at a faster pace.
That doesn’t include, however, shooting 2 of 11 from 3-point range as the Red Raiders did against the Cardinal.
That also doesn’t include allowing 15 offensive rebounds and getting out-rebounded — again — by 20 boards.
Knight also didn’t commit 20 turnovers.
Knight also didn’t allow the opposition to shoot 56 percent from the field — 51 percent in the first half and 61 percent after already holding a 57-34 halftime lead.
“We didn’t guard them and they got easy buckets, or we’d screw up a switch and we’d still not guard them,” Knight said of the defensive problems. “Or, we get into them and defend them and don’t want to move our feet, so we just foul them.”
Fouls have been a problem for the Red Raiders (9-4) in their losses this season. Tech committed 23 personal fouls against the Cardinal, the second-highest total of the season.
The Red Raiders’ high mark for fouls — not counting the “game” against Division II East Central (Okla.) — came in a 96-78 loss at UTEP, when they were whistled for 24 fouls.
Alan Voskuil and John Roberson fouled out against the Cardinal. Nick Okorie, in his first game back after missing the previous four with a sprained ankle, committed four in 19 minutes. Corbin Ray had three fouls in six minutes.
In Tech’s 85-79 loss at Lamar, the Red Raiders committed 21 fouls. In their loss to Pittsburgh, they were whistled for 22.
In the Red Raiders’ eight wins — again, not counting the 167-115 win over East Central that Knight has referred to as merely a scrimmage — Tech has committed at least 20 fouls just once, in the 77-73 win over Mississippi State.
The problems against Stanford, though, weren’t limited to the defensive end. Tech didn’t play well on offense either.
“We didn’t push it up,” Knight said. “We were slow offensively, we were slow defensively. We need to get back to our three-guard offense now that Nick is getting healthy so we can get off to better starts. … I thought we were slow at both ends. They were the aggressors, not us. Usually, we’re the aggressors at least from an offensive standpoint.”
Pat Knight is responsible for the 3 largest losses in Texas Tech history. I think the poor guy is in way over his head. If his name was not Knight there was no chance he would get the head coaching position at Texas Tech, in my opinion. Big 12 schools don’t just give their programs to coaches with no experience. It was a huge mistake by Gerald Myers in my opinion. But of course the Lubbock media won’t question any of these decisions, they are just way to nice there.
