Red Raiders QB says great chance’ coach Leach will leave university
By Betsy Blaney | ASSOCIATED PRESS
Even as confirmation came that Mike Leach was no longer seeking the University of Washington coaching job, Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell said he thinks there’s a “great chance” his coach will leave.
The potential Heisman Trophy finalist said if Leach left it wouldn’t be because of Tech.
“I think it has to do more with him wanting a new challenge,” Harrell said.
“There’s a great chance” he’d leave, Harrell said. “But if he stays he’s going to continue to be successful here, and I’d love to see that.”
A few hours later a source close to the coach who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss it confirmed Leach had withdrawn his name from consideration for the Huskies’ post.
Boise State’s Pat Hill on Thursday also withdrew his name from the Washington search.
Leach’s name remains on a wish list at Auburn, a day after Tommy Tuberville resigned as coach of the Tigers.
Harrell said Leach “gets more out of less than probably anyone in the country” because he doesn’t get first shot at top recruits.
Leach could build on an already-strong program elsewhere, Harrell said.
“Maybe he goes to a program where he’ll be at the top of the conference, where he’s not having to battle to build up a reputation of a team, where he can take a team that has a good reputation and it’ll be easier for him to play in BCS games, maybe win a national championship,” Harrell said.
Harrell, a fifth-senior, also said he believes that his favorite target, Mike Crabtree, will probably leave for the NFL draft after the season
“I do think my last year is his last year,” Harrell said.
As for Leach, Harrell said, “He’s got to make the decision where he wants to go for himself. I think he loves it here but he loves new challenges at the same time.
“He deserves every penny he gets, he deserves every offer, and wherever he goes he’ll be successful, and it’ll be fun to watch,” Harrell said.

Coach Leach, with his recent success, has raised the visability of Tech as a target for blue chip HS recruits. Yes we try harder for them than Texas and OU and others; we have to. We needed a perfect season to cement that draw and make Lubbock more competitive. But winning a really big BCS bowl- the money and the media coverage- plus Leach staying on is not chopped liver when it comes to getting blue chip signees in coming years. It can only be better. Harrel is right; Leach can make a silk purse out of ears tails, hooves; you name it.

Coach Leach deserves to be paid among the top 15 or 20 coaches in the country, he is a remarkable coach that has brought a great deal of consistent success to a program at a level unlike any coach before him here at Tech, and yes that means ANY coach. look at the coaching won-loss records of every coach at Tech through history, and although we have had some good coaches, none have been at the level of Leach. I believe he wants to stay at Tech, the fans love him, the students love him, and Raiderville is growing every year, its a great atmosphere, and its his work that helped build the stadium and continues to do so. Lets go Raiders, Stay here Coach, we want you and appreciate everything you have done.

G. myers never won anything as a Basketball coach and he is still around, why is that? He does not like the fact that Mike Leach is more loved than he will ever be. If Myers lets leach get away, Myers should be let go that same day. G. Myers is not a friend of Tech, all he is doing is causing a major problem. Remember when Mike Leach first got here, Myers was causing prblems for Coach Leach then. I say let myers go.

Chill out ! he will make 2.65 million next year, more if he wins, we are in a reccession and you guys want to make him the highest paid coach in the USA! He will get his raise and extension and stay if he wants or go if he wants. This would be happening even if they signed him to a 10 year deal last summer, it’s happened every year he has been here and had success, it will happen next year if he has success, the elite (National Champion) schools will always want our coach (whoever) if they are sucessful, because they feel they are better than us and rightfully so until we win the big one. I thank Coach Leach and all the coaches and players for an exciting year! I am proud he is our coach, but the facts are facts and until he can beat Stoops in Norman or Mack in Austin he doesn’t deserve their salary.

Could Harrell be any more arrogant to think that just because he won’t be here next year then neither will Leach? Taylor Potts is going to have a great year next year and the guy has a absolute cannon for an arm! There is one reason and one reason alone that Harrell will not win the Heisman…………..he is not a leader. Great talent but a leader he isn’t. When times got tough at OU all you saw was a little boy on the sideline with his bottom lip stuck out because things weren’t going his way. Everytime he threw a bad pass he was seen on national television grandstanding his recievers trying to make it look like they ran the wrong route. Harrell be be back in Ennis coaching with his dad in 2 years and he can scream and pout all he wants.

When recruits starts wondering if Leach is staying or not, then its time to act fast. Leach, get a grip. Your a HOT commodity. If you want more money then demand it and TECH will pay. If you want to leave then leave. What will hurt TECH is the unknowing. If player prospects are wondering if you are going to stay or leave they will not come to TECH and the chance of getting them narrows the window of time. We need to know, NOW. I want Leach here and always have. Pay him and get it done. Leach deserves it. If he doesn’t accept then he doesn’t want to be here. Either way TECH deserves to know NOW!

alot of contrasting information in the press, even within this one newspaper.
One article reads that there are three defensive players deemed all american. the next reads three offensive player make the all american. neither refers to confimation of the other for the most part.
now in one article, crabtree announces he’s staying, and harrell claims he thinks both Leach and crabs are leaving.
Leach has the spotlight. He isn’t going to UW, despite a one day trip to seattle. The Auburn job pops open. People say he wants to go where he would be in the top of a conference. Auburn is up against some long-running dynasties in its competition.

WHOAH, WHOAH, WHOAH,
G Myers is a Stud AD. Look at where he has taken Tech from and where it is now.
He is a genius for picking Leach as a head coach even though he had not college head coaching experience.
He was able to land Bob Knight in Lubbock.
He got a very good ladies coach in Curry.
He has Wes Kipley running in full stride and winning individual track NC’s. I could keep going… We are screwed if Myers leaves.
Myers may not have been a great coach, but he is a great AD.

Leach built the program. Thats how good this guy is. When you think of TTU football you think of Mike Leach. Mack Brown and Stoops didnt have to build thier programs – that tells you how good Leach is. Mike Leach is a young JoePa(PennState) and Bobby B(Florida State).

Wait a minute. Stoops inherited an awful Oklahoma team that had been down for several years. He did re-build their program. And Tech was not a sub 500 team when Leach took over. In fact, we had been playing Texas a little better before he came. Mack Brown probably inherited the best situation, but he had to help Texas overcome constant underachieving. I am a huge Leach fan and he has definitely taken us to the next level, but lets not re-write history. Tech was a decent team to takeover when he did.

and as far as Harrell’s comments that Leach likes new challenges, how about this…”win a Big 12 title”. Or even, “play in the Big 12 title game”. He hasn’t done all there is to do here. Even A&M has played in and won a Big 12 Championship.

Tacoma, you are right about Stoops. He did build that program.
But it wasn’t from the ground. OU had success before.
it just wasnt so recent. His recruiting must have done alot.
Leach was on the ealry Stoops’ season at OU. Only for one year, but it should matter wuite a bit. The Leach doctrine still exists in OU.
However, apparently Stoops can make adjustments. Look at the abandonment of the spread in the 1st drive vs Tech.
Look at how he may train Bradford to hand off differently to compensate for his broken left hand vs Mizzou
All that said, Leach better stay and finish what he started. He has two years on the current agreement. I hope tech has the money to hold him, and i hope he isn’t trrying to make 4 million after one 11-1 season.
Though I do agree he deserves what he gets. What a great coach

JFolsom: Myers is a “Stud AD”? Are you kidding? You obviously have NO inside knowledge of how the department works. Myers hasn’t made a significant decision since taking over the big chair. He was put in there as a “puppet” for Dykes, Dickey and Sharp back years ago. The administration went along with it and likes the fact that he is a dolt who doesn’t mind being told what to do, as long as he gets his check. Do you REALLY believe he had the sack to bring in Bob Knight? Really? Bob Knight has pieces of guys like Myers in his stool.

Spanish philosopher George Santayana said, “Those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Former Texas Tech head football coaches who regarded us as a mere rung on the success ladder learned too late that Texas Tech has the best fans-alumni-supporters and this unique base has contributed mightily to their success(es) while at Tech. The names Jim Carlen, Steve Sloan, Jerry Moore, and David McWilliams come to mind. They all flopped after leaving Raiderland because they failed to recognize the “help” they received from our outstanding fans-alumni-supporters base. The David McWilliams implosion at Texas being the most delicious. If Mike Leach does not fully appreciate what he has at Texas Tech my bet is that he will soon be a member of that ‘What Might Have Been’ support group along with Carlen, Sloan, Moore, and McWilliams.
Hope he stays.

I agree with some of the other people posting, the worst part is the uncertainty. it really hurts us everywhere. In what should be one of Tech’s finest moments [preparing for a good bowl game against a very good team], we’re all left wondering.
I understand if Leach wants to leave, its his choice and he can do what he likes, I’d personally love it if he stayed. If he chooses to stay though, I hope this is it for a while. I would think that it is It tough on everyone associated with the Tech football program that every year the head coach is rumored to be leaving.

I loved Glen Dippel’s comments! How refreshing to throw in some philosophy into the discussion…and how à propos! Indeed, Leach might want to consider the history of these past coaches’ success after leaving TTU. They actually became irrelevant, and if one is not a TTU alum, they are mostly forgotten. Leach has more ingenuity and intellectual creativity in his football analysis, but a new school is an unknown quantity. He is building a tradition, slowly building a national powerhouse, and I think that in the long run he would prefer to be a Joe Pa with a fabled history. He has already brought TTU to uncharted heights a SHARE of the Big 12 South Title and a number 2 ranking. But for stupid Graham Harrel remark (thanks buddy for opening your big mouth) we can all agree that there is plenty left for Leach to accomplish: A Big 12 Championship, National Championship, beating UT and OU in the same season, hell just beating them regularly, etc. I BELIEVE that Leach can accomplish all of this and more. He says he wants to stay here, and a pirate always keeps his word. As long as he is not too greedy, TTU and the fans should be able to provide the money to compensate him fairly for his good work.

Benny,
I don’t even understand your comments. Myers fired Dickey in what many thought was a quick trigger. Bob Knight has made it absolutely clear that he believes Myers is the best AD in the country and would not have come to Lubbock absent his long time personal relationship with Myers. (Remember, Indiana played the 1st game at the United Spirit Arena because of Knight’s ties to Myers.) Myers was instrumental in getting Kristy Curry at a time when she was regarded as one of the very best young coaches in the country and only one year out from her team (Purdue) playing in a national championship game. Myers has been instrumental in building programs to generate support and money to build the ATC and for two stadium renovations in 10 years and for upgrades to every other athletic facility on campus.
Also, (I’m not a Myers homer) but it is necessary to set the record straight on his coaching career…His last few teams were as bad as any teams in the history of college basketball. But, in the early 80′s, his teams won the Southwest conference tournament several times and were consistently in the top half of the conference. I’m not saying that he was Roy Williams, but he was not the worst coach either.

Do you not think that Graham speaks to Coach Leach at all, I am sure he does, but I am almost positive it is not about Coach Leach and his career choices, Of course there is a chance he may move on, just put yourself in his shoes, what would you do. Graham may just be sweetening the pot for Coach Leach to get him the $$$$ he deserves. He has done a fantstic job. I thank him all the time for the way he treats my son, and the program that not only excels on the field but in the classroom as well, Mikey (as my son calls him) always has time for his players and he will discipline them as well(ask Woods). We have a treasure and should be rewarded accordingly , we are truly the oasis of the Big 12 South.
This happens at the end of every season, we should be accustomed to the retoric started by our beloved sports writers, and the delima of coaching. In that profession, They all have a getaway car, or in Mikey’s case a Three masted squarerigger. Gun’s up Coach, I hope you get all the dubloons you deserve and I look forward to seeing you watch the program that you authored grow.

This leaves Syracuse and……
Head pirate will be back.
AND, BTW, I think it is foolish to think that this has anything to do with a contract extension. Unless the extension includes a buyout clause, then we will have this same situation every year that a high profile job comes open.
IF THERE IS A NEW DEAL, PLEASE INCLUDE A HUGE BUYOUT CLAUSE SO THAT THERE WILL BE SOME FINALITY TO THIS!!!!

We all know the football team carries the athletic budjet. Leach deserves to be one of the top paid coaches in the country, and he knows that. No other coach will fill those extra seats Tech just got founding to add on and all that money will be a waste. It’s very simple. SIGN HIM AND PAY HIM! If Myers thinks it’s hard to find money for things in the athletic program’s budjet now, wait untill Leach is gone and Jones stadium isn’t full anymore. There’s money there to pay him. Myers has to find a way.

The stadium only seats around 50,000 now, and with extra seats upcoming it will seat around 60,000 or 65,000.

Successful recruiting, transitions, and develpment cost way more than what it would cost to make Coach Leach the highest paid coach in the land. Coach Leach is the best thing to happen to Tech and Lubbock since Sharpe/Swoopes (that includes you Kent) and it would be a shame to loose him because somebody thinks they are being a “clever negotiator”. I hope he recognizes that more accomplishments will result from the continued implementation of this process.
