Leach, Washington discuss coaching job
BY DON WILLIAMS
AVALANCHE-JOURNAL
Texas Tech football coach Mike Leach was in Seattle on Tuesday to discuss with University of Washington officials that school’s soon-vacant head coaching job, The Avalanche-Journal has confirmed.
“As of now, he hasn’t been offered the job,’’ a source told The A-J on Tuesday night.
The same source said although Washington is 0-11 with one game left, if UW officials decide to zero in on Tech’s coach, their potential to hire Leach away shouldn’t be underestimated.
“I don’t care if they are 0-11,’’ the source said. “They’re the state university; he would bring a national flair to the state, and he’d be able to recruit there at a level he’s not able to recruit in Texas. He’s still the third or fourth level of recruitment in Texas. At Washington, he’ll be the first. All that’s true, and a man of vision such as Mike Leach considers these things.’’
UW coach Tyrone Willingham has been in lame-duck mode since his forced resignation on Oct. 27. He is 11-36 at the school.
Leach could have plenty to consider this week.
Tech athletic director Gerald Myers said Tuesday he’s preparing to offer Leach a raise and an extension, as promised since before the season.
Myers said the new offer could be extended sometime this week. He declined to discuss dollar figures of the proposal, other than to say he wants to sign Leach to a five-year contract with a raise.
Myers said he’s “had (contract) numbers in my mind for a long time,” but said the Red Raiders’ going 11-1 and winning a share of the Big 12 South Division championship for the first time increased what Leach deserved.
“Oh, yeah. Yeah, definitely,” Myers said. “I think that was part of our reasoning (for waiting until December), to see exactly what the team accomplished, how they did, and I think it will have an impact on the numbers. We’ve always tried to compensate our coaches on what they accomplish.”
As of 10 p.m. Tuesday, Leach had not returned calls placed throughout the day to his cell phone.
On Monday, Leach told The Associated Press that he “absolutely” wants to stay at Tech.
“I mean it’s an interesting question,” he said. “I’ve been there nine years, which is longer than most marriages or jobs, you know.”
Myers said he had not talked to Leach since Saturday evening after the Red Raiders’ 35-28 win over Baylor in the regular-season finale. Myers said no one from Washington nor Leach had contacted him about any discussion between the two.
Myers said he would expect Leach to tell him if he’s a legitimate candidate for another job.
“I think he would if he’s serious about it,” Myers said. “I think he would let me know. So I don’t know. He wouldn’t have to tell me, but I haven’t heard from anybody, the coaches or anybody else about that.”
Leach’s agent, Gary O’Hagan, was tight-lipped when asked about Leach’s trip.
“I don’t know anything about that,” O’Hagan said. “I’m not going to comment on that.”
Leach has two years left on his current deal.
If he remains in place for another year, Leach will make at least $2.65 million next season — $1.85 million in guaranteed income and $800,000 as a completion bonus on a previous contract agreement. In 2010, he would make at least $2.35 million — $2.15 million in guaranteed income and $200,000 from another contract-completion bonus.
Though some Tech fans have been antsy about Leach’s contract dwindling to two years remaining, Myers said he takes keeping the coach seriously.
“I think he’s done a great job with this team and exceeded expectations and tied for the conference championship, and attendance was really good,” Myers said. “All those things are important in trying to retain a coach.”
Three members of Leach’s staff said Tuesday that they were unaware of his whereabouts and had not been informed if he had traveled to Seattle. With the team’s regular season over, the Red Raiders have the maximum seven assistants on the road recruiting this week.
Washington, at one time a national champion and perennial Rose Bowl contender under Don James, bottomed out this season at 0-11 and 0-8 in the Pac-10 Conference. The Huskies end the regular season Saturday at California.

This chap seems a little rough around the edges for the UW. This is the kind of coach that Washington State hires not the UW. I just can’t imagine him interacting with the Board of Regents. Could you imagine him in the same room with Bill Gates Sr? Well…
Washington has a great football history. Seattle is a wonderful city
and that region has incredible opportunity. Mike Leach is an outstanding coach and a better human being. If he leaves for UW he will be missed, but Texas Tech will survive and continue to grow because Texas Tech is bigger than any individual. Our program will prosper while UW will struggle. Why will they struugle? Because USC, Cal, Oregon, Oregon State are way ahead of this once proud program–and there is limited talent to recruit.
So, UW fans best luck to you. Meanwhile Texas Tech will keep marching on while your program searches for answers.

You Tech fans probably don’t remember 2001 when the Huskies got snuffed out of the national championship game. We beat Miami that year, and they ended up playing Florida State for the national championship. Remind you guys of anything this year?
Yeah, it’s been a long 7+ years since then, but our program has been a dynasty and it WILL return to the glory days.
Mike Leach is a great mind and a great coach. I don’t think he’d take a trip to Seattle if he wasn’t considering a move. Leach won’t have the struggle to steal recruits from the Longhorns, TCU, the Aggies, Oklahoma, and several other good football programs near Lubbock. I hate to tell you guys, but Leach is probably fed up with the fact that Myers didn’t offer an extension before the season and is now making excuses for why he didn’t.
I hope he picks the Purple and Gold, we’ll be behind him ALL THE WAY!

Of course I can see Leach in the same room with Bill Gates Senior. Remember Leach is a Law School Grad and Gates Sr. is an attorney.
UDub and the Seattle region has more money to rebuild their program than most other major citys and states in the country. Seattle has 2 of the richest guys in the world living here, Gates Jr. and Paul Allen. Most people don’t know that Paul Allen also has ties to UW.
The rich UW donors have just been waiting to dump Losingham so they can get a new coach. The fat cat Tyee Club members will get behind Leach and throw more money at UW than Bush threw at the oil companies in the last 8 years.
Look out whOregon. Phil Knight & Nike can’t go dollar for dollar with some of the UW boosters. I hope that whOregon wants to get into a donations arms race with UW once the Tyee Club members jump on the Leach train.

I am a Tech grad who lived in the Seattle area in 91, UW is a quirky place and the Pacific Northwest is beautiful in the summer.
With the misty weather a Leach team cannot throw the ball with abandon like in Lubbock. Help me out Huskies, what kind of passing success has UW had in the past years? Don’t mention Warren Moon.
I think Leach will hold out for a Cal/UCLA spot down the road. He will be eager to reload for another run next year.

doesnt it make complete since that he was up there RIGHT AFTER thanksgiving? everyone knows that Leach grew up in the northwest and went to school at byu. so wouldnt it make since that he has family up in that area? and since he had practices last week, they would have to wait until after thanksgiving to celebrate, which explains why his wife was with him. also, if he actually was interviewing, wouldnt either Leach or uw inform Gerald Myers about this? the ONLY reason that it says this rumor started was because he was seen at the airport – NOT at the campus, or anywhere else. plus, Leach has built this program just how he wants it, and is starting to get better recruits every year, so why would he have any reason to leave Lubbock? sorry guys, but it just doesnt add up. he’s said it himself many times – LEACH LOVES LUBBOCK. even if he does leave, (which is about a 2% chance) i’ll be there in Dallas to witness his last victory.
Tech fans don’t forget: it’s still the greatest season in school history. WRECK ‘EM!

I don’t think he is leaving. He has said many times he is here to build Tech to what Bowden did for Florida State. Why would he want to go to a weaker conference? As far as the argument of Leach being at the top school in the state of Washington and how he can get better recruits. Well, something that they may or may not know. Leach and his staff can evaluate talent better than any “rating’ service and has proven it year after year. Year after year A&M is said to have top 10 recruiting classes only to see Tech whip them with 3 and a sprinkling for 4 stars recruits. Texas is the same way. There is no way, with the money, the facilities that school has that Mac Brown shouldn’t win a national title every year. I could coach that team to a national title.
If he leaves, I will be done. 233 straight home games will come to a end. I have had enough of coaches coming through here and leaving, as the next one will likely be another Spike Dykes. Another hayseed coach who is mediocre. I will not watch that again or pay good money to watch it.
So do whatever it takes to keep Leach, or many of us will be done.

Reasons Leach is Staying:
1. 6 years, 15 million is almost a pay cut. The article says that Leach is now guaranteed to make $2.65 & 2.35 mill over the next two years without a new deal that raises his salary. I have trouble seeing UW throwing upwards of 3 mill a year in a long term deal to a new coach but I don’t se that as being a problem for Tech with Leach.
2. Also, recruiting is easier in Washington because it is WASHINGTON. Everyone knows that Texas, Florida, and Ohio have the best High School Football in the country. Tech is getting major clout on the recruiting trail. How many Texas, Florida and Ohio kids end up on the UW football roster? (Hint: Its about as many as UW wins in the last 2 years.) Also, you think Tech is a step-child to Texas on the recruiting trail here, try recruiting against USC/Pete Carroll in California!!!
3. Leach has a team that is likely to stay in the 9-3 to 11-1 range next year in the best conference in the country. Leach is a rock star at Tech. Pat Forde on ESPN noted that college football is better when Leach has a relevant team all season. No chance of that for YEARS at UW.
4. UW is COMPLETELY devoid of talent. I don’t ever remember Texas Tech going 0-11 in a season. UW has lost by a combined 263 points this year, lost to Notre Dame 33-7 and lost to winless Wash. St.. This is not rebuilding, this is searching for signs of life!!
Maybe UW can have a contest during the 3rd quarter break of the Cal game. It can be sponsored by Lynnwood Townhomes. The kid who hits the hardest can be the new middle linebacker!!! That may help attract Leach. Just a thought.
All kidding aside…I hope Leach stays at Tech. I hope nothing but the best for UW. Good luck with the coaching search.

I’m sure Lubbock is a beautiful place to live, but how many cities are within 1 hour of the ocean, 100’s of lakes, and the mountains? Seattle is.
It’s a beautiful place to live, and regardless of what you red raiders think, Washington IS an ELITE program.
National Champions in 1990, and 2nd in the nation in 2001 (Thanks to east coast bias).
As all you red raiders fans know, Leach is a great coach, and he CAN turn things around quickly at UW. Look at Alabama as an example. Where were you guys 9 years ago? He deserves all of this press, he’s worked HARD to get tech where you guys are today. It’s unfortunate that your AD waited until now to talk about an extension. Personally, I’d have a bad taste in my mouth if my AD let my contract get down to 2 years. Look at Weis!? An extension with a .500 record? Ludacris!
This may seem a bit disheartening, but what did you guys think of that “immaculate reception” by UO’s Gresham against OSU?
I was rooting for OSU. Those Sooners claimed that UW played dirty against them this year. It was the Sooners who played dirty.

Mike Leach has had 9 excellent years at Texas Tech. He has built a solid infrastructure with his staff that success can continue for years after he is gone. It will still be a tough goal to win a National title.
In Washington, Mike can become even more successful than Don James ever was. The resources he has available and the competition/schedule he would face, means greater chance of being in the national title race or in a BCS bowl game. In his career, he would not be second or third mentioned after Mack Brown. That has to be very appealing.
I have become a big Texas Tech football fan. There are many here in Seattle. And i would be happy to have Mike Leach bring his game to Washington. You better root for Jim Mora to take the job.

Leach would be good up here in the NW and his style fits the PAC-10 well, but it “he” seems to fit Tech perfect. On the USC front, they recruit nationally. Given the success of Cal, Boise State, Utah, Oregon, and lesser successes at Arizona State and Oregon State, there’s a lot of talent to go around.
I see one major disadvantage at Tech that UW does not face: going to either Austin or Norman each and every year. Running a double mega-school gauntlet each year. Tech beat the ‘Horns on the last play in Lubbock, and then go to Norman and got completely throttled. UW only plays USC once a year. If you could build some success (UW could compete for a bowl next year, presuming QB Locker is healthy), you just have to beat USC once, not twice.
Plus, Seattle is the most beautiful city in America. Seattle, not Lubbock, is “God’s country.”

First of all, I envy the season fans of the Red Raiders are enjoying. And I encourage all y’all to, in the words of former Mariner OF Mike Cameron, “… enjoy your enjoyment … .”
Seasons like your team is having are precious. Don’t let Leach’s flirtation with Washington ruin it.
It would be a boon to our lowly program to land a coach the caliber ot Mike Leach. However, this is one Husky fan who doubts Leach will make the jump to Husky Stadium (although I wish he would).
My feeling is Mr. Leach is skillfully exploiting the possibility of leaving for Washington to extract a luscious contract the equal of Charlie GasBag’s from Tech. He’s pointing his finger-pistols at the AD (and the boosters), but unlike you or me, his pretend six-shooters ain’t firing blanks. That beeping sound you hear is Leach backing an armored car up to the stadium. Fill’er up, boys! Arrrghh … and be sharp about it, matey!
Would Husky fans welcome Leach? Heck, yeah! Could Washington be an attractive opportunity to Leach? Probably, it’s a place he could succeed on the field and at the bank. And I think there are folks here actively working to bring him to aboard.
I just don’t think Mr. Leach will be headed for Seattle if/when he leaves Lubbock. Depending on what happens in South Bend later this season or next, there could be openings there and/or Gainesville (among other places). Or he could stay in Lubbock — with a fatter paycheck.
Please don’t hate on us Huskies for drooling on your coach. All’s fair in love and college football (it’s likely U-dub is being used). As a heard a man from Texas say long ago, “It’s jus’ bidness.”

Although born to Frank and Sandra Leach[2] in Susanville, California, Mike Leach claims Cody, Wyoming as his hometown.[3] He graduated from Cody High School before studying at Brigham Young University, where he closely followed the exploits of the Brigham Young Cougars. The Cougars, guided by head coach LaVell Edwards and offensive coordinator Norm Chow, played a pass-oriented offense. Leach graduated in 1983 with a B.S. in American Studies.[4]
In 1986, Leach earned a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Pepperdine University School of Law. first off, luke, mr texas tech fan, stop hating on UDub. you say we are the worst program in college football.. well your guy Leach has been around a lot longer than you probably have and knows that in the pac10, before there was USC dominating, there was UW. national titles, rose bowl victories, conference championships. you think texas and oklahoma own texas? UW had first picks of the entire west coast, including california under don james, for decades. as a fanbase, we have the most alumni living in town than any college nationwide. in the last and worst 2 years of Husky football, we still brought in more revenue than any other pac10 school by more than 6 million. now imagine how much more it’d be if there was a winning team.

The article quotes some UW genius as stating that Tech recruits at third or fourth level in Texas but UW if first in Washington. First of all, Tech has clearly moved up in the ranks and is getting quality players second only to UT, ahead of A&M and steadily closing the gap on UT. Secondly, first tier in Washington is akin to fifth or sixth tier in Texas. I’d take the Rice or UTEP job before I’d look at the worst team in the PAC 10. Leach may move on some day, but I would hope he’s smarter than to go to this wasteland. (Just look at the last “offensive genius” who tried to win with Ty Willinham’s players) And as for the Raiders when he does, we’ll be just fine.

As far as recruiting, Texas has more 5-A (largest classification) high schools than Washington has high schools. More than 450 high school seniors in Texas have D-1 offers already. Being “third or fourth” in Texas is still much better than number one in Washington…with that great tradition of Washington high school football, LMAO.
It has taken Mike 9 years to get to this point, why would he want to start over? He was one game away from a NC game and will probably be Coach of the Year (or Saban). What would he gain by going to Washington?
And by the way, Oklahoma played Florida State in the NC in 2000. Miami got hosed just like Washington. We beat FSU, you beat us, and FSU got to go.

If Myers wanted Leach to stay so badly why did he wait until now to give him a raise and an extention on his contract…let’s wait until the last possible minute to try and get him to stay by offering him more money, etc. This should have already been done…like at the first of the season when it was already being discussed! I think by waiting until now to give him the raise and the extension on his contract may just cause Tech to lose their coach. I sincerely hope Coach Leach remains in Lubbock but as the saying goes “too little too late.” The raise and contract extention should have already been done long ago!!

So the biggest question is why did Myers have to “wait until after the season to see how much success we have”? That’s the way you lose good coaches. After 9 years you had to make him prove himself another year? So how much impact has Mike Leach made on the stadium improvements? How much money has come into Lubbock and TT as a result of Leach’s football team? Excitment has never been this high and we have an AD that doesn’t recognize any of that.
I have said it before on these blogs and will say it again……I was there in 1976 and we let our coach leave. Saying….oh that’s ok we’re an established program now and we can find another coach that will win us a SWC championship. So….how did that turn out? Can you say Jerry Moore…..1 year of David McWilliams….need I go on? We had 20 years of bad football until Spike started re-building the program ……Leach has taken it to another level. 30 years later we have the same scenario and Gerald Myers is saying ……we want him…..we will pay him. If he had gotten off his arse and taken care of this before the year began we wouldn’t be talking about this now.
MIssouri sure knew how to make sure their coach wasn’t on a visit to Washington yesterday. Similiar scenario and they did it before the last game of the year and the Big 12 championship game.
If Leach leaves then I think Gerald Myers should explain to Raider Nation why he wouldn’t pull the trigger on a coach that the alumni and current students want. And if he says…..we wanted to keep him but we don’t want to disturb the season….that’s BS.
Poor….poor……decisions being made by the AD. He needs to be held accountable by the supporters, students & alumni.

I am not a fan of either school, but if any of you think that TT is even remotely close to UW as a football PROGRAM on a national scale you are kidding yourself. There is not 1 person in the country who would think TT is a better job. Not one. You have had 1 great year with 2 great players that don’t return. You will be back to the 7-8 win seasons next year, which is great for a school like TT. The Big 12 has been good for 2 years and when Daniel, Harrell, Reesing all move on it will back to UT/OU (oops, it never left that).
As for football states, find it funny and almost pathetic that someone would leave out California as a top state, especially when discussing Ohio (what 15 years ago when you didn’t need to be an athlete and could just hit?) up there. Washington the state actually produces some pretty good talent, just need to keep it away from Oregon.

Gerald Myers has always been and idiot.
Before he got the AD job (he was given the job to keep out Bob Sweezy) he was making sure no one parked wrong in the athletics parking lot, sending out memos to staff about not eating white-out or stapeling their fingers during working hours and letting employees know, what was being served in the atheletics dining hall, that’s the guy you want running the show.
He’s been a blunder forever, it’s been so bad at Tech financially that he was trying to get a Dallas game with A&M just to pay coach Leach’s salary.
A&M’s boss told Myers that A&M built their stadium to play games in it and they were not concerned with paying Leach’s salary, it was more important to their school and community to keep the Tech and A&M game home and home, so Myers made a deal with OSU.
Without BCS cash, Texas Tech will have to scramble once again just to pay the rent and now cowboy Kent Hance will be spending $25,000,000 to up-grade the east side of “The Jones” and only adding 500 public seats (great plan when cash and fans are what you need).
Bobby Gleason would be another reason for coach Leach to head to Washington, the little weasel keeps giving himself a raise with cash flow problems that need to be addressed.
All in all coach Leach has done a wonderful job for Texas Tech but worrying about gettin paid should not be an issue.
Good Luck Coach Leach in whatever you do, we should all know that Tech couldn’t hold him here forever.

Article is right, in that Washington offers recruiting potential that Tech does not. And the Pac-10 would be a good fit for Leach’s offense.
But the climate of Seattle does not make it a good fit for Leach and his offense?
I have no problem with any coach wanting to go where they have a better chance to win championships, including national championships. But Washington does not seem enough better for Leach, in that regard, to warrant the move.

I’m tired of reading about how Leach can’t interact with UW’s board of regents. What the heck do you people think Lubbock is? Have you ever been to Texas? 1.)Lubbock is the second largest city in the Big 12. 2.) Texas Tech one of three state universities in Texas (pop. 24,000,000 compared to UW and WSU in WA pop. 6,500,000) So Tech theoretically has 8 mil to your 3.25 mil from which to recruit. “But we recruit from OR and northern CA! Well we have kids from Okla, and all surrounding states as well. Tech has 30,000 students. This isn’t some little community college in the desert. OU, OSU, NU, KU, KSU, Tech: we’re ALL out here in the vast plains of the mid-continent, but contrary to what you libs out there in tax land think, we have money too. We are also as highly educated as you people think you are. People are still flocking to Texas because we have jobs, low taxes, and an independent streak some find refreshing.
I wish the best for Leach, 9 years is a long time to spend anywhere, and if he can make more money or have a better chance to compete, I hope he finds what makes him happy, because he’s contributed greatly to my Saturday afternoon happiness for some long time now.
I see why people can’t stand Husky fans too. They’re just like every other “flagship” state program. OU,UTex,UTenn,UF,UGa, “look at us! we’re owed respect, we have tradition! Why would someone go to your school when they could come to ours?” Maybe that’s why other schools exist. Some people just like being in Lubbock, Pullman, Stillwater, Manhattan(KS).
Got that off my chest. We should seriously hire Art Briles. He’s a Tech alumnus and was an assistant coach under Leach. Looks like a heck of a recruiter too.

I’m not about to argue the merits of Seattle vs. Lubbock. Even as a proud west texan, i don’t think that is a good idea. But I don’t think Leach will be making a decision based on Seattle v.s Lubbock. If coaches did that, NYU would be a powerhouse and OU (and most of the SEC for that matter) would be in a lot of trouble. Truth is those things don’t matter to a coach or most recruits that much.
I think UW has a lot to offer the right coach, but i don’t think this will be the program Tech loses Mike Leach to. I think he will sign a new contract and that will finally be it and we can rest for a few years in the south plains. I think UW needs a young enthusiastic coach eager to prove himself and a atheltic dept and boosters patient enough to give him time to make the changes necessary [consider yourself lucky you didn't get Kiffin at UW, if he has ANY success it will be b/c he was able to get his dad and his dad's friends to help him]. I don’t envy any program having to recruit in the shadow of USC in an area that isn’t as recruit rich as Texas.

Recently, I’ve traveled on business to both Seattle & Lubbock (through Dallas). Of course it costs more to live in Seattle! Seattle might be one of the best cities in America – I haven’t seen one that comes close in terms of views/landscape. There’s not even a comparison between the two. Lubbock was “dry”. “Dry” – like you couldn’t purchase alcohol dry. Seriously. It was a (bad) trip back in time to 1920. High school football must be a big deal because there’s NOTHING else to do. I saw people TAILGATING for HIGH SCHOOL football in Carroll, TX. Yes, really.
No mountains nearby, no lakes (at least none like Seattle’s), no ocean, no hiking/biking/skiing. Just lots of eating & humidity & flat land. Go to Washington, Leach. Even if your wife can’t get half as much house as in Lubbock. There’s a reason.

DaWg’s history:
The University football team’s first game was in 1889. From 1907 to 1917, Washington football teams were unbeaten in 63 consecutive games, an NCAA Division I-A record.[1] During this period, Washington won 39 games in a row under coach Gil Dobie, the second longest winning streak in NCAA Division I-A history. In 1916, Dobie finished his remarkable coaching career at Washington with an undefeated 58-0-3 record. The 1925 team posted an undefeated record but lost to Alabama 21-20 in the Rose Bowl. The 1960 team finished 10-1, and won its second consecutive Rose Bowl by defeating national champion Minnesota 17-7 (the national champion was declared before the bowl games in 1960). Don James became head coach in 1975 and transformed the team into a national power while compiling a 153-57-2 record. James’ first successful year was in 1977 with the team quarterbacked by Warren Moon culminating in a 27-20 victory over Michigan in the Rose Bowl. Washington and Michigan played again in the Rose Bowl in 1981 resulting in a Michigan win 23-11. The next year, the Huskies returned to the Rose Bowl and defeated Iowa 28-0, the last Rose Bowl shutout and the only shutout in the past half century. In 1984, Washington posted an 11-1 record and beat Oklahoma 28-17 to win the Orange Bowl. Senior running back, Jacque Robinson won the MVP award and was the first player to win MVP awards for both the Orange and Rose Bowls. The 1991 team is considered to be the best Washington Husky football team and among the best in college football history. The team went undefeated, steamrolling opponents by an average score of 42-9 in regular season, including wins over No. 9 Nebraska, No. 7 California and a 34-14 win over No. 4 Michigan in the Rose Bowl. In 2000, Washington finished with an 11-1 record, and won its seventh Rose Bowl under the leadership of Marques Tuiasosopo. Washington’s all-time record of 639-363-50 (as of 2005) ranks 17th by all-time winning percentage and 16th by all-time victories.

I note that the article pointed out that Mike will be able to pick up Washington’s “first-level” recruits. So what?
Other coaches, including Don James, found out that they were non-competitive using the state’s best players; they had to go out-of-state, notably to California, to recruit the players that made their teams competitive.
Nobody goes TO Washington to recruit top-notch football talent; EVERYBODY comes to Texas.

I’m unbiased here but a PAC-10 fan and alum (ASU). I have been to both cities at least a dozen times including many trips to the campuses (I recruit college grads).
What do you like: Realty said that you can buy a lot more house in Lubbock than Seattle. That is so true, but in Seattle you won’t have to build a lake too. Mrs. Leach will make the decision on that.
Culture and ambiance: This gets a little iffy. I lean left and Seattle is a great city for lefties, but their lefties are a bunch of elitists who look down on Wazzou and call them hicks. Edge Even
Food: OMG, this is tough. I love salmon and Seattle chefs know salmon, and none of that farm-raised stuff. I love Mexican food, Lubbock, you’re Mex is not as good as Arizona or NM – but good. I hear your BBQ is good. Edge Seattle.
Music: Really tough, both have rich musical heritages. Seattle would not have a rock and roll museum if Buddy Holly never lived. Edge Lubbock
Doing things: Sorry Lubbock, but hunting isn’t going to cut it. All kinds of fishing in Seattle, pro sports (whoops, where’s the Sonics?), boating/sailing and skiing. Edge Seattle by a wide margin.
Street People: Seattle wins hands down. Lots of street people. Edge Seattle if you like street people and getting asked for loose change.
People watching: I’m spoiled looking at ASU coeds. Edge Even
Airport: Lubbock is my all time favorite airport. My record is plane to gate (7 passengers, no other planes at the other gates) to luggage retrieval to rental agency to car in 6 minutes. Edge Lubbock
Diversity: Heck, I feel like a foreigner in Lubbock, Ya’ll. Seattle is a melting pot, Lubbock is melting. Edge Seattle
Traffic: Seattle, do something about that damn double deck thingy. Big Edge Lubbock
Climate: God, I hate both you’re winters. True story, I arrived in Lubbock and was freezing trying to put luggage in the rental and scraping the windshield. I don’t even own a pair of gloves. On the news that night that they said there was a “blue norther” which sounded like something out of porn flick. They said to move your pets inside. I awoke in the morning to the local news showing a house burning down. It seems the homeowner put a space heater in the doghouse. But in Seattle I learned a new word, mildew. Swear to god, in Arizona we don’t know what that is. Edge Even

I have been a neutral observer to this lengthy discussion. I live in Washington, but I am an Oregon Duck. I spent eight years of my 24 year Army career in Texas. I don’t have a dag (excuse me) in the fight.
Both TT and UDub fans have some valid points. Seattle is a great city and UDub has a wonderful football tradition. Recruiting these days — at least for teams in the Pac10 — is national in scope. heck, the best high school running back in Texas last year was an Oregon State Beaver this year! And I have to say that most people, given the choice would take western Washington over life in west Texas. I’ve been to Lubbock. It smells funny, it’s too flat and there is little to do.
All that said. As a west Texan pointed out, the people in west Texas are wonderful. They treat strangers with friendliness and respect. They are polite. They are the only “real” Texans left. The rest of the state is populated by outsiders of first generation newbies from Michigan who moved in for a job when the auto industry tanked in the 70s.
But most of all, coach Leach needs to stay at Texas Tech because it is the right thing to do. There are things more important than money. He should coach there for 10 more years, retire and have the stadium named after him. He can be a legend, not just another mercenary who grabbed for the most cash he could get regardless of things like honor and loyalty. I watched that Tech v U of Texas game. What a special thing that was. Leach will never recapture that feeling in Seattle. take a line from the Wizard of Oz, coach, “There’s no place like home.”

I was there when you took off your jacket and ran out to mid-court during a classic game versus Washington and Detlef Schrempf and they did steal that game from us. You were mad, upset and gave it your special Myers flair. However you lost. Are you going to let them come in and steal another one from you?
If so, there will be no Bubba Jennings (yes I am going old school) to come and bail you out this time. You will face the fallout alone.
You have this off time now. Sit down, Hance, Leach, his agent, and yourself, away from all the distractions and get the deal done. There is no reason at this point not to sign him. All that football revenue that is helping to support all the other programs under your direction. That is because of what Leach has generated. His success has helped make other things for other sports possible.
For the life of me when you sold out of your season tickets you should have signed him right then. Why put it off?
You lose him it not only affects the football program but all programs in the athletic department. He is a good fit for Tech and Tech a good fit for him.

Guess that bothers me a bit about Mike Leach, character-wise. Sneaking off like that, without talking to the AD or Chancellor, and being upfront about it. That shows a bit of a lack of either respect for others or confidence in one’s self. Didn’t he sneak around before angling for the Miami or Florida job?

you may not have heard of the aaa high school in bellevue, wa who, 4 years ago or so ended the 11 year winning streak for aaaa de la salle, out of cali. or maybe skyline hs, who currently has a kid under center who is rated the best underclassman qb in the nation, jake heaps. also look up kasen williams, often target of heap’s. as a hs freshman, williams was offered by ucla in addition to uw and several smaller, regional d1 schools including undefeated boise state. leach will undoubtedly get 1st pick in wa recruits and select cali standouts. we also do well in az, colo, hawaii, and yes, have a few out of tx. there are assistants that have been on the uw staff for 15 years, retained by all of the coaches who have come (and gone) based on their relationships with the right local and cali high school programs and would be kept by the incoming coach so as to not miss a beat in recruiting. btw, heaps is lds.
loserham and our previous ad were brought in to be clean, but didn’t end up winning, not even close. we are clean, but lierone never embraced husky nation and proved a horid x’s and o’s man. the weak ad was booted as well. now we bring in the coach who’s record and priority is winning. uw resources and opportunity cannot be touched by tt.
if leach isn’t into the coast, lakes and endless stretches of mountains, an hour and a half east is identical to wyoming landscape and climate where many seattleites own vacation homes and cabins. leach stays in texas only if he “wants” to or is not man enough to take on a 2 year rebuild. the resources are in place here and we are poised to explode back onto the scene.
there is talk of leach’s personality not fitting in. it cannot be worse than loserhams stoic, and lifeless demanor. personally i get a real kick out of leach and can’t wait to buy a giant purple and gold pirate flag for game day.
as one previous uw poster stated, please pardon us for drooling over your guy. we have been punished for 4 years under the agony looserham-ball and see the light at the end of the tunnel in the potential of leach coming here. best of luck on your bowl and if you retain leach, congratulations.

I am amazed. You people make it sound like Texas Tech has treated Leach poorly. When Leach himself says he would like to stay at Texas Tech.
A lot of this just sounds like unverified gossip.
tom,
i think that is the point. leach expresses desire to stay, and your ad says ‘wellll, let’s wait and see how you do.”
couldn’t make leach seem too appreciated for going to a bowl every year, for like what, 9 seasons?
sounds to me like your ad is now laying the p.r. groundwork to be able to say to the fan base “see? i did everything in my power to keep him, but ultimately coach leach wanted to go elsewhere.”
as a guy in a city who’s pro basketball team just lied and left, i am sensitive to a “taking” so i hope if we don’t get him, you keep him. and if he leaves for us, best wishes in replacing him effectively.

Hey ya’ll. Congrats on a great season for TT there in Lubbock. Ya’ll were a thing of beauty to watch all year. I am an Auburn grad and our coach got canned today (which is embarrassing, he is a great man) and the rumors are thick and heavy we are chasing your coach. Any scuttlebutt from yall’s area would be appreciated! Good luck and “Wreck’em!!”

So what has Myers been smoking. Saying he is negotiating a contract extension and Leach’s agent says he has not heard from TT. Who’s not telling the truth? It should never have come to this. This team is built for this type of offense and we will suffer if Leach leaves. He will take the good coaches. I can’t believe how naive some Tech fans are to say simply we are good enough and we will build from here if Leach leaves. This is the highest ranking and best team in Tech history. All because of Leach. Stadium expansion….because of Leach…..national exposure because of Leach. Wow…..how stupid can one AD and administration be?
Run Myers out of here as soon as possible if Leach leaves.

Steve – “No one goes to Washington to recruit a player.”
Funny… check out the top rated QB in the country… recruited by UW, LSU, USC, Alabama, Florida… Jake Heaps of Skyline HS just outside of Seattle.
Or, his teammate, WHO’S ONLY A FRESHMAN and the #1 receiver in the country, Kasean Williams.
Go check it out… now… rivals.com; scout.com, your pick.
Point Being: TT will ALWAYS be the red-headed step-child of UT, TA&M, OU, hell, even OSU at this point.
UW is the top top in WA state… and if you think there’s not talent, just look at how many #1 draft picks in FB and BB have come out of there in the past 3 years.
If/when a coach at UW seals up the state of Washington in recruiting, and then just cherry picks the best of UT’s, OU’s and USC’s leftovers (i.e. Michael Crabtree and Jaques Rogers), they will dominate everything north USC, and be competing head-to-head with the Trojans in no time.

So tell me guys, if Washington is such a great place to recruit and build a program, why are they 0 – 11? If it’s such a great program and place, then Ty Willingham must be the worst coach in Division I history!

Sorry UW, Mike’s just up there on a recruiting trip, taking advantage of a free flight. No longer is Tech a lower tier destination for Texas talent, it all starts now. You Huskies have no idea about the greatness of West Texas.

He will leave lubbock for a school he can get recruits from, I grew up in lubbock and still know that not much has changed from the spike dykes era, the only difference is that leach now only schedules high schools for non conference, and gets a big win once a year in lubbock whether it’s ut or ou. If leach would schedule teams like dykes(ohio state, pen state etc..), they’d have the same record 7-5 every year. It makes more sense to go to auburn where he can get some atheletes. In texas he still has to fight to get ut and ou’s leftovers in recruiting

Leach could not be in a better position, one way or another the man is set up for a ridiculous payday. The University of Washington has the deeper pockets without a doubt. He could be very successful up here find a way to knock the Trojans off their high horse and he will be in business. He would get the pick of the litter in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. Ask the OU about the talent in Idaho. There is no place to go but up from what will soon be a 0-12 team. UW is a program that we were proud of for a long time, we know the excitement that you are experiencing in Lubbock and if we can steal your coach and some of your excitement I am in. I understand what a small College community is all about, Leach is probably treated like a king down there which is obvious incentive to stay. If that AD of yours can’t find his checkbook we will take good care of your coach. I am excited to see how this plays out.

Auburn – second in the state of Alabama – always will be. UDub, tops in Washington – so what, that equates to being the top school in Iowa. Right now, Tech has become a close second to Texas and is closing the gap, far ahead of A&M, which is totally irrelevant when it comes to Big 12 football. Art Briles at Tech – cr*p, that guy couldn’t even recruit his own kid to come to Tech out of Stephenville. Sonny Dykes, now there’s a depressing thought. I think the consensus for Tech fans is that Myers needs to go, the sooner the better. He’s his prime passed him long ago. They need to ask Mike Leach who he’d like to work with as AD, then go get the guy.
It is amusing to read some stinkin’ Okie (sorry for the redunancy, folks) criticizing Lubbock and Tech. Okie City in the NBA. Here’s the scenario on NBA draft day: the agent calls his first rounder, I got good news and bad news for you, kid. You are a first-round pick. Yes, that’s the good news. Oh, the bad news? You have to live in Oklahoma City. What? Oh, yeah, I’ll get on the phone right now and call Europe. We’ll re-enter the draft next year.

Believe it or not, before Bobby Bowden came to Florida State, they were a fairly mediocre football program. Now Bowden is a god in college football (although he should have retired about 3 years ago, but that’s another story).
Tech is now the second best college football program in Texas and is gaining rapidly on tu. The attention showered on Tech this year has exceeded the Boise State wonder year. Leach has an opportunity to become the next Bobby Bowden if he stays at Tech and finishes building Raider Nation. Recruits love winners and going to a bowl game every year. You can make all the sick jokes about Lubbock you want, but winning sells more than geography. Three nationally televised games in a row? Two Heisman trophy candidates? If Leach stays, don’t be shocked at how fast they start to get “de-commits” from the OU, UT, and A&M recruits by signing day.
It’s up to Mike. Right now he has more negotiating leverage than any coach in years. And he knows it.

Is Leach coming back? And more coaching stuff
Posted by Bob Condotta
I had an inopportune time to have some mechanical difficulties.
But I’m back on-line and have seen and heard rumors and reports that Mike Leach may be back in Seattle for a second interview with the Huskies.
I can’t confirm them in the sense that I’ve actually seen Leach on campus or anything, but I have talked with enough people who believe it has happened to think there is something to it.
If so, that gives a lot of indication that the Huskies are really serious about Leach, and that the search is reaching a real fever pitch.
One person told me today that Leach and his wife were really intrigued by the idea of living in Seattle after nine years in Lubbock, Texas. Another told me that they enjoyed a visit to the UW medical center — his daughter just started medical school and is apparently intrigued by the idea of attending the UW medical center, renowned as one of the best in the world.
Some sources have said Leach didn’t have a great first interview and that UW AD Scott Woodward had some initial reservations about Leach’s reputed “quirkiness” which would have helped create a reason for a second interview.

Prayercap – You said. Tyrone Willingham LITERALLY MIGHT BE the worst coach in D1 history; seriously, I’m not kidding.
He was NEVER a coordinator at any level.
And to give you a little insight into Washington’s trouble the past 4 years:
- Willingham’s teams have lost 10+ games in the past 4 years where the lead in the second half. Hell, LAST SEASON they lost 3 games alone where they gave up DOUBLE DIGIT LEADS in the 4th quarter.
- This program could EASILY be .500+. Willingham was a VERY lazy recruiter. Also, alienated former players and boosters; closed practices to reporters; and lastly, NEVER took accountability; ALWAYS blamed players for losses.
- CONSISTENTLY, EVEN WHILE the program’s been down, UW’s recruiting classes have been ranked in the top 3-4 in the Pac 10; 2007’s was top 20 nationally.
- Also, look at UW’s non-conference schedule EVERY YEAR. UW doesn’t play a micky-mouse non-conference like Ohio State (worst in D1), Penn State, etc. Hell, look at TT’s non-conference. UW is one OF ONLY 5 D1 teams to NEVER have played a D2 team.
- 2008 UW non-conference: Oregon (ranked 23rd at time), still top 20; BYU (ranked 14th at time); Oklahoma (ranked 2nd at time); Notre Dame (at least a big name)
- 2007: Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Air Force
Lastly, for all those who knock the Pac-10, GET A CLUE! The SEC and Big 12 ARE MUCH EASIER because you don’t play every team in your league. All of these conference championship games are BS and just about money; you wouldn’t need them if you played a round-robin schedule.
Pac-10 is the ONLY conference that plays a round-robbin schedule where every team plays one another DURING THE SEASON; thereby, it’s the only conference with a true champion.

Lastly, if I were a TT fan, I’d be VERY concerned.
I thought Leach was just positioning to get a better deal from TT.
However, the most damning thing I’ve read about the possibility of him staying in TT is this:
TT’s AD keeps saying they’re in a negotiation; that they’re giving him a raise, and that Leach knows it.
However, Leach’s agent has REPEATEDLY said he’s had no contact with TT.
This is VERY BAD for TT if they actually want to keep him. You don’t let things “slip” in negotiations unless it helps your position. Seems to this Washingtonian that TT has shot themselves in the foot.
PS For those taking shots about Seattle, get real. Come on up and visit. I was stationed in Ft. Hood for 4 years. While Texas had some very nice people, it was just a God-awful place. From Houston, to El Paso. If there were Hell on earth, it’d be in the form of El Paso, Lubbuck, or Killeen; take your pick.

There has been a lot of talk about how Texas is this great state for recruiting and Washington is terrible. Keep in mind Texas is three times larger in population than Washington. Which means there will be more talent based merely on volume. But at the same time there are four times as many Division I-A or FBS schools in Texas as Washington, not to mention schools from Oklahoma, Nebraska and Louisiana that regularly recruit in Texas. The best safety in college football, Taylor Mays, is from Washington. Jonathan Stewart, a first round draft pick, is from Washington. The starting left tackle at Michigan, Steve Schilling, is from Washington. I’m sensing a pattern here that Washington may not be a terrible place to recruit if the school has a coach that puts in the effort. Which is something the last couple coaches have failed to do.
Remember this comparing the schools football records: Washington is one of the best programs in the history of college football. As of 2007, Washington has the 18th highest winning percentage (62.2%) ever. Where was Texas Tech you ask? 67th (50.9%). Mike Leach would be moving from a program roughly in line with Akron and Kansas (both at 50.9%) to a program roughly in line with Florida (62.3%). But you object. You say Florida has this guy named Tebow and a good coach. Well, UW has a Tebow like player in Jake Locker, who is faster and has a stronger arm than Tebow but has a terrible coach. Improve Locker’s coaching and he will be a Heisman candidate. He IS that good.
Also note: the last 3 UW coaches to take over the program when not heaped in controversy have won Rose Bowls almost immediately. Jim Owens year 3. Don James year 3. Rick Neuheisel year 2. Jim Lambright, Keith Gilbertson and Tyrone Willingham all took over a program facing sanctions and lots of controversy. That’s all gone now. I don’t like Ty because he never seemed engaged in winning or recruiting and largely failed at both. But he did clean the program up, delivering a team with a clean slate to the next coach.
Where Leach falls short in his candidacy for UW head coach is his style and possibly his personality. UW is classically known for being a physical program, dominating both the offensive and defensive lines. Leach is a video game offense type guy and even if his team is scoring 70 there will be booster saying “why did we give up 34 points” or “this team is too soft.” The memory of guys like Steve Emtman and Lincoln Kennedy will die hard. Leach is known as an esoteric guy and he has a law degree. The last coach at UW with a law degree had a bad ending to his tenure. And major boosters may not open the wallet to support Leach because they don’t get along with him. But if there is something UW fans understand, it is winning and winning will go a long way to cure those ills.

you heard it from me first earlier yesterday,,, now here’s a quote from another article on al.com:

Leach on way back
Posted by Bob Condotta
Back at it this morning with one source telling me that Mike Leach will be back in Seattle today sometime, probably on his way back as I type this.
This indicates a real seriousness in the Leach negotiations — coaches coming back for a second interview is pretty rare, especially in this high profile of a situation.
One person told me that while there are lots of rumors about Leach and Auburn, it is also thought that Leach is close with Tommy Tuberville and isn’t thrilled with the way that situation was handled, possibly further pointing him in the direction of the Huskies if he does look to leave.
I’ll have a few more notes up in a little while.

Two sources told us earlier that Texas Tech coach Mike Leach would be heading back to Seattle today for a second meeting with the Huskies.
But if so, he hasn’t left yet.
I just got off the phone with Texas Tech sports information director Chris Cook who said “he’s sitting in his office right now.”

Cook had no other information on Leach’s schedule or future plans, only to say that right now, the coach is still in Lubbock.
