Texas Tech’s sports publicity staff distributed a position paper after the team’s regular-season finale Saturday. The handout contained 15 bullet points making the team’s case to be the South Division representative at the Big 12 Conference championship game and later BCS bowl games.
The Red Raiders seemed to understand, though, that having taken a bullet the week before at Oklahoma was going to outweigh all those bullet points.
Tech won a piece of the South Division title for the first time and made it to 11-1 for the first time since 1973, but didn’t budge when the final regular-season BCS standings were released Sunday. The Red Raiders stayed No. 7, and there are no scenarios that would land Tech in a BCS game at the end of the season.
Given that they were beaten 65-21 in their last road game at Oklahoma and had to rally to beat Baylor 35-28 on Saturday, Tech players seemed resigned that they didn’t end their campaign for a BCS spot on a strong enough note.

“It’s a great conference,” Tech quarterback Graham Harrell said, “and when you have this many great teams in one conference, things like this happen. You come up with three-way ties.
“Oklahoma State, who I think is good enough to win a lot of conferences, has lost two games (before the Cowboys lost Saturday night to Oklahoma) and aren’t even getting mentioned. They’re kind of left behind, and they’re a great team.
“We would like to have won last week and gone undefeated, but we didn’t. We want to go to the best bowl and want to go to the best game, want the best turnout, but whatever happens happens.
“It’s been an exciting year, been an exciting conference — I think the best conference in the country right now. It’s crazy at the top, but that’s the way things are.”
Tech running back Baron Batch was more direct, saying the Raiders had their chance and blew it at Oklahoma.
“It was nothing that I could say, ‘Poor us. We’re getting messed over,’’’ Batch said. “All we had to do was go out and win, and we didn’t.”
This is the first time one of the Big 12 divisions has ended in a three-way tie. But Tech wouldn’t be the first Big 12 team to have such a strong regular season and not make one of the big-money bowl games.
The 1998 Kansas State team went 11-0 in the regular season, lost to Texas A&M at the Big 12 championship game in St. Louis, and then fell to the Alamo Bowl, where it was beaten by Purdue. The 2007 Missouri team went 11-1, lost the Big 12 title game to Oklahoma in San Antonio, and then drilled Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl.
On Sunday, Oklahoma jumped Texas into the coveted No. 2 spot in the BCS standings with Texas slipping to third. Because three teams tied for the Big 12 South title, the conference had to go all the way to the fifth tiebreaker — highest BCS ranking — to decide which goes to Kansas City to play Missouri this week.
A BCS provision that guarantees a spot to at-large candidates ranked in the top four is what dooms Tech. With no game this week, Texas is likely to remain in the top four and join the Missouri-OU winner in the BCS when invitations go out next Sunday.
Among the few who seemed to think Tech deserves better was head coach Mike Leach, who sounded a theme he first mentioned last Monday.
“I think we’re as good as any one-loss team in the country,” Leach said. “We’re in the best conference in the country, and I don’t see where anybody else in the country could debate that they should be regarded (higher) than us, if they have one loss. The only other two that I could think of that would be Oklahoma and Texas.”

Wherever we go, whomever we play, be there! Tech fans and alums, now is the call to the Raider Nation to step up and show the country who we are!
Raiders — do your thing — YOU will win the bowl game and WE will be there to support you.. It will be a “home game” as we bring the Jones to you! Execute, we are 2nd to no one — just look at the Big XII South standings!
Control what we/you can control and the victory will be won! WE will be there to celebrate with you!

Sorry, but it still sucks. The Cotton Bowl is a painted over dump in a bad part of town. What kind of reward is that?

I cannot judge this season by where the BCS puts us. I am a long time Tech fan. I was at the Jones when SMU had the crazy kick return to spoil Tech’s upset bid. I was at the Jones when B.J. Toliver went off and Tech killed TCU by 50+. I was in Dallas when Hanspard had the greatest rushing performance that I have EVER seen against Oklahoma State. I sat in the stands and waited out a two hour rain delay to watch Tech get beat by Missouri several years ago. I was at both Cotton Bowl losses. I can only judge this season by my frame of reference.
In all the years I have watched this team, I have never had more fun during a football season than I have this year. I have never seen Tech get or deserve the attention that they have gotten this season. I have never been more excited about the future of this program than I am. THIS HAS BEEN A WONDERFUL YEAR AND THE REWARD THAT WE GET IS TO HAVE BEEN A PART OF SUCH A SPECIAL SEASON. No bowl game can replace this. (Really think about whether you would feel better about a Fiesta Bowl win over Boston College than a Cotton Bowl win over Ole Miss or Georgia.)

Doesn’t matter — If our team is there and they are playing, we should be there. Just the way that it is.

Couldn’t have said it better. I work overseas, and to see 5 Tech games on AFN this year was awesome!
This has been a year like no other for Tech Fans.
I would imagine that our potential recruiting class just grew exponentially as well.
I’ll be home for Christmas, and if Tech is in the Cotton Bowl, I’ll be there. I believe I read on the Cotton Bowl site that this is the last year of games there. How nice would that be to thump an SEC team in the last game in the Cotton Bowl? Very nice.
WRECK ‘EM!

The only injustice in all of this is the fact that Tech has to go to the cotton bowl while a horrible Ohio State team is probably playing Texas in the Fiesta Bowl.
Someone please explain why in the world the powers that be at the BCS thought it right to limit each conference to two teams?

Like Raider Fan above, I have followed Tech for a long time. I attended both Cotton Bowls where Tech lost and I have seen, both in person and on TV, Tech lose many other games that they were supposed to win. The OU game was just one more example of a Tech team not being prepared.
Both Bob Stoops and Mac Brown have had the reputation of not being able to win the BIG game over the last several years. Mike Leach will probably have that reputation now for a few years, assuming he stays at Tech and is able to continue to have his team in BIG games. Tech, both the team and the coaches, has two more hurdles to overcome: being able to win the BIG game consistently and being able to play up to their potential after a BIG loss.
I will be happy if Tech goes to the Cotton Bowl and WINS for the first time. That will be the first step in getting us to be a top tier team in the BCS. The fact that the stadium is old and south of I30 does not diminish the importance of Tech needing to win there. I will be there if we are invited and hope that the third time will be the charm.

I’ve got to agree with Raider Proud… I’ll be at whatever bowl our team goes to. The Fiesta would have been special… but I remember when I was in school, that we were excited to get an invitation to the All American Bowl and the Alamo Bowl.
The Cotton Bowl isn’t what we had hoped for… but if you really want to see a dump, take a road trip to the Independence Bowl.
NOW THAT’S A DUMP! lol
GUNS STILL UP…… GO RAIDERS.

Better question. Why in the world would Texas go to a BCS game before us. Same record and they lost head to head. Must be nice to have friends in high places so you can feel even more “entitled.”

Cotton Bowl is a bummer. We will play an inferior opponent. Most likely, an opponent where only a loss would meaningfully alter TTU’s ranking. Further, history has not been kind to teams who have been punked by the system. When UT lobbied hard a few years back to get the Rose Bowl (v. Michigan), it threw #4 Cal to the Holiday Bowl, where they were disinterested and TTU won handily. I also recall KSU having a perfect season, losing one game, then getting beaten in the Alamo Bowl by Purdue. I am very concerned about a “we-should-be-in-a-BCS-bowl-TTU” versus a “very-happy-to-be-here” opponent. Only motivation is that TTU has never won the Cotton (0-3 v. St. Mary’s, USC, Ala).

I agree with all of you about a Cotton Bowl bid.
Since we are third in our conference, we don’t get a BCS bowl.
But you know what? We should make clear that we are too good for BCS anyway. Its a faulty system. If it was a team, it would have a losing record every season.
But I am glad we at least get a bowl game with an 11-1 record.
Too bad it couldn’t be Texas and the SEC loser in Fiesta and
USC vs Texas Tech in Cotton Bowl.

I need just a bit of clarity…what will happen if by some chance, Mizzou beats OU? Will that effect the bowl scenario at all? Would it help us get into a BCS bowl?
Regardless…I will be there loud and proud to support our Red Raiders!

The real bummer: losing to an “inferior” unranked 8-4 Ole Miss team in the Cotton Bowl. Tech will have to play WELL to beat Ole Miss, which won at Florida and has nothing to lose/everything to gain. Once again, Houston Nutt has taken what should have been a 10-win team and squeezed eight wins out of it. Ole Miss will be seriously jacked to knock off a Top 10 Tech team. This is Houston Nutt’s dream scenario. He excels as the underachieving underdog who pulls the big upset Jan 2. Look out Tech fans! You’ve been warned,

Raidergirl…I think that would be a nightmare scenario for Tech. If OU were to lose to Mizzou then Texas would probably go to the NC, Mizzou would get a BCS spot for winning the Big 12 and OU would probably get the Cotton Bowl bumping us to probably the Holiday.

after OU and Baylor, Tech has even more to prove now, I think
Ol Miss is no pushover, just not a BCS bowl or ranked team.
If Tech lost the Cotton Bowl, we lose all respect.

Some people on here are so ungreatful. We get to play on New Years, one of the premier and legendary Bowls, one that hasn’t went back and forth of what they want to call their bowl. This is the same bowl that will be moving to the new Dallas Cowboys stadium to position themselves for a future BCS Bowl. I know it’s not a BCS Bowl that alot of us hoped and I am just as dissappointed as many of you but we could be like Texas A&M and staying home during the Holiday Bowl Season.
The benefit Texas Tech will get for playing in the Cotton Bowl will be recruiting the DFW area and putting our brand of football in these kids eyes. Our recruiting was boosted the last time we played in the Cotton Bowl and look at us now. It can only help us get better and better. Hopefully instead of rebuilding we can start reloading every year.
I for one will be there at the Cotton Bowl if that is where we play. If you don’t want to go the Cotton Bowl, then don’t. That just leaves more tickets for more deserving Red Raider fans that support their team through thick and thin.
As far as Ole Miss goes, I’m look forward to playing them. They are one of the few teams that has scheduled Texas Tech for a Home and Home from the SEC in the past and they are the only team that beat Florida at Florida so I wouldn’t slight Ole Miss because that can get you beat. Go ask Cal about that when we played them in the Holiday Bowl after they got passed up for a BCS Bowl. I for one am not looking past Ole Miss after our performance against Baylor. We are luckiy we get to play in the Cotton Bowl after our near loss to Baylor.
Congratulations Texas Tech for a share of the Big 12 South and for a memorable year. Everyone around the country now knows who Texas Tech is and we became the darlings of the College Football world among other fans all over the nation.

Loud and Proud of TTU! And in my view the only viable solution to the BCS fiasco is an 8-team playoff that decides the best on the field. But until that happens, we take what we’re given and milk it for all its worth with a total team effort and win. 12-1 looks good, feels good, and IS good, so today I’m celebrating with anticipation of that 12th victory!!!

Call me crazy, but I actually think the Cotton Bowl is a better result than the Fiesta (would’ve preferred the NC game of course). I honestly think if we had to play in any game NOT the NC game, Cotton is best.
Seriously, if we had been in the “BCS” bowl, what does that really mean? A LITTLE more money, a LITTLE more “prestige” (maybe), but that’s about it. And on top of that, it’d be much further off and we possibly take a future hit if we don’t travel well in a down economy year. I’d rather see our fanbase get pumped up for what can essentially be a “home” game and show the bowls that our fans will come out in force to support our team. It also gives us all a better chance to see our team LIVE for less cost.
Yeah, there’s an element of “specialness” that supposedly comes with a BCS bid, but if we win the Cotton bowl and finish in the top 5, I figure that’s just as good if not better.

We don’t need to prove ouselves anymore. We’ve already proved it. Going thru a merciless Big 12 schedule and finishing
11-1. Bowl games are just the icing on the cake. If we played in most other conferences we’re 12-0(utah) or what about Ohio St, or Penn St. These teams are going to a BCS bowl, please!!!! Granted they are good teams, but would this even be in our conversation if we took away the one bad game. Sure, everyone would like to remove the one bad game and even if you did Ohio St still has a loss. Tells me how flawed the system is, but this was in place at the beginning and we shouldn’t wait til after the fact to say something about it. It’s hard to play the game if you don’t know the rules, but we knew the rules. So upward and onward, so keep your head up #53, don’t dwell on the past, look to the future and reach for the stars, the biggest things in life are still ahead of you!
By the way, my hats off to Graham, 9 breaks in his non- throwing hand at half time, with his team behind, he gets “TAPED” up and returns for the 2nd half to lead his team to a win. Kind of tells me what a competitor he is and what an example for his team. All these kids are tough!!! See you at the Bowl.

Tech’s fans definitely show class, we are not whining as much as UT, not even about the Cotton bid.
Despite our loss to OU, we are still part of the 3way tie. We still have an argument, but we aren’t crying about it.

Change people! change! I see all the changes that are taking place with TECH.11-1,sellout crowds.Expansions on the stadium.
Some things gets under (my craw) though. All the negative so-called supporters out there. If you can call them that.Look where Tech has come from to now.Nothing says that that all these good things will come to an end.We need to move forward.I see that the team is (moving forward).Look at the last four years. We have had quality wins and I strongly believe that we no longer will be OU and TEXAS dormat in years to come.Seems crazy but I think TECH crowds have finally figured out that a loud stadium helps win games.Don’t you think? The west side figured it out huh? We can keep this going by getting to this bowl game no matter where or who we play.Quit whinning about who and where we are going to play.It reminds me me of looking at a TEXAS or OU site when they don’t get their way.We are better than that. One thing that concerned me about the BAYLOR game.Every where in the stadium was full except where? The student section.Don’t give me the excuse that they were not back from hoilday break. They were there, you did not just show up.If people 60-70 years old barely making it up the steps to their seat could come brave the cold well then that student section should have been full. And I travel 300 miles round trip to every game.Sounds like I am coming down hard on some of you TECH fans, but come on.Great things are just starting for TECH.Keep supporting the teams(all teams) that is what makes an elite team.A good sound fan base that supports no matter what.Peace- hope- and love to all you TECH fans.We are the best!!!

I am not a whinning fan just speakine the truth. The Cotton Bowl is not a just reward for 11-1 in one of the two toughest conferences in the country. #7 ranked teams do not play in the Cotton Bowl, heck not even in the old school Cotton Bowl did that happen.
A history lesson at one point in time circa pre 1995 and before the Cotton Bowl usually had one of the top 4 teams in it year in and year out and it figured huge in the national title hunt almost yearly. The BCS comes along and the Cotton Bowl becomes the same as all the rest of the Motor City or Music City bowls. The bottom line is in 2008 the BCS as flawed as it is sets the standard for bowl excellence and while a New Years day bowl is great it is not the one Tech deserves. The system in flawed and I would have loved the Cotton Bowl bid in 1988 not in 2008.
I celebrate this year with all the blessings our team gave us it was great! I will bask in that glow as long as I can while the truth is fair park in 2008 is not a reward. The reward we got is that we know in 2008 our program is in great hands and we all should look forward to more success in years to come. There was a time when that was not always the case and but back then we thought just going to a no name bowl was great. Those days are gone and for the better!

The best reason I can think of the support the Raiders in any bowl game is let Mike Leach know that we are behind him and the team and that Texas Tech is the place to be. Defense wins championships and that is getting better. Fan support will go a long way in helping the team and coaching staff to play their hearts out for us. just like they have all season. The first Tech game I ever saw was a 66 to 0 loss to Texas in 1966. It has been up and down until the Leach era and we need to do all we can to keep him. Sooooo……Go to the bowl and rally the team! The powers that be and the computers got it wrong. Texas should have been the #2 team since the only game they lost, was at the end of 4 straight against top 10 teams, then only lost it when a guy dropped a game cinching interception in his hands and Tech pulled off a miracle play in the last second. Strength against strength, played on a neutral site, Texas beat OU straight up by 10 points. Tech would be the team but, 52-7? I mean Tech was behind at one point to OU by a score of 52-7. That is an unforgiveable score no matter how you try to spin it. The final score of the OU game really was more like 72-14 since OU had the ball on the 1 yard line but had their 2nd and 3rd team in there and they gave up a Tech TD late by their 2nd and 3rd team defense. The OU game completely stripped away any sort of claim Tech could make for a BCS bowl game. It is just a shame that a dropped interception caused the true Big 12 South Champion Longhorns a shot at the National Championship. Only Texas can stop Florida or Alabama… OU will struggle and Tech would see another major whipping if they were allowed to be in that game…

Anyone who thinks an eight game playoff would have given Tech a chance has not thought through what they are saying.
Do you really think the NCAA or BCS or whoever is in control of setting up an eight game playoff would allow 3 teams from the same division into the bracket? That would only leave 5 other teams for the ENTIRE REST OF THE COUNTRY. Even though it would be fair to do so because Tech, OU and UT all earned their rankings, I have noticed that fairness is not a consideration when setting up post season competition in college football.

What Happen to Graham Harrell and The Texas Tech Red Raiders? They got Stooped. Bob Stoops knew the Raiders every move. Was it a case of the teacher, Stoops, taking the pupil, Leach , behind the wood shed or was there more than what met the casual observers eye? Unlike Mike Leach I did play defense. Most good defensive player do not ham it up between plays. They stand very quite listen and look for clues as to what the offense is going to run next. Now Bob and his staff coached the greatest game of football in history or they too were looking and listening. The only other answer is God loves Oklahoma more than Texas Tech. I can assure you being a Tech grad and fifth generation Texan, that is not the case. Did Stoops steal Leaches signals. Did Oklahoma relay one of six signs out to their defense; run right, run left, run up gut and pass short sideline, pass middle, and pass deep. I think in Pro football it would be part of the game, but college we are at least in a grey area. If they did manipulate the game in this manner I think Stoops should at least confess, if not ask Graham and the Raiders for forgiveness. For this embarrassing loss cost Tech a possible National Championship and more likely their first Heisman. And one more thing Mike cover your mouth. There’s lip readers out there. They come from the School for the Deaf here in Austin.
