Sooners leave Red Raiders battered, bruised after romp

By Don Williams | AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

NORMAN, Okla. – Texas Tech’s unbeaten season came to an end in a manner that left the Red Raiders not so much heartbroken as just broken – and battered and bruised.

No. 5 Oklahoma dominated No. 2 Tech from the outset and rolled to a 65-21 victory Saturday night, ending the nation’s longest unbeaten streak at 12 games and extending its own home winning streak to 24. It was Mike Leach’s third-worst loss as Tech head coach.

Oklahoma running back DeMarco Murray breaks free with help from a crushing block by Phil Loadholt.

Tech dropped into a three-way tie for the Big 12 Conference South Division lead with Oklahoma and No. 3 Texas, all with records of 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the league. The Red Raiders can still make the Big 12 championship game on Dec. 6 with a win over Baylor in next week’s regular-season finale and an OU loss at Oklahoma State.

The way the Sooners played on Saturday, it’s hard to picture that happening.

Tech had allowed only one 100-yard rusher all season, but OU had two. Tech had allowed only five sacks all season but, against OU, gave up four. The Raiders’ usually prolific offense was 1-for-13 on third down.

And in a subplot of Heisman Trophy frontrunners, Tech quarterback Graham Harrell was upstaged by Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, who threw four touchdown passes, giving him a school-record 42 for the season.

Bradford led his team to seven touchdowns and a field goal on their first nine drives. A couple of the scores were cheap ones, because OU returned an interception and a fumble inside the Tech 5-yard line.

But there was nothing misleading about the score.

Oklahoma's J.R. Bryant (21) helps sack Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell during their game Saturday in Norman, Okla. The showdown of top 5 teams was a rout: Oklahoma 65, Texas Tech 21.

Oklahoma's J.R. Bryant (21) helps sack Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell during their game Saturday in Norman, Okla. The showdown of top 5 teams was a rout: Oklahoma 65, Texas Tech 21.

Dazzling runs by DeMarco Murray and effective ones from Chris Brown – the pair combined for five rushing touchdowns – loosened up Tech’s defense for Bradford’s play-action passing.

The Raiders, trying to win over four ranked teams in a row, completely unraveled. Rarely sacked all season, Harrell was sacked on back-to-back plays in the first quarter. In the final minute of the first half, he had an interception returned to the 1. OU cashed in, making it 42-7 at halftime.

OU’s defense, a question mark this season but fired up by a senior-night crowd, forced Tech to punt on its first three series, then stopped the Raiders on downs the next two times – at the OU 15- and 45-yard lines. Tech’s first score, on a 25-yard pass to Tramain Swindall, made it 28-7 at 6:28 before halftime.

That didn’t signal a momentum change.

OU came back with an 80-yard, 12-play drive – 11 of them runs – that ended with a Brown touchdown.

At halftime, Oklahoma had more points than Tech had given up in a game this season and almost as many yards. The Sooners had rolled up 402, and the season-high had been 421. They finished with 625.

We got a good ole butt stomping. We got beat everywhere but it would seem to me that the coaching preparation should have been a little different for this one. OU has stopped Techs offense in ,most of the previous games. They let us catch and then punish and tackle us. It would seem that going up field more from the outset would of loosen them up a bit. As far as our defense, they looked like the Dallas Cowboys defense. Using arm tackles and hit them but not wrap up. Our defense watched as one player hit and let the ball carrier go but were not prepared because they had given up on the play thinking the person was tackled. We saw players hit and lay on the grould watching them run up field. In all other games if we missed a tackle those players were scrambling to get up to make the tackle again. Ruffin, it’s time to get back to BASICS. Tackle, using basics and if they don’t , get someone who will. We may not be able to win with less talent but we can live with losing if that player or team gave 100% all the time.

The test of a great season will be how we deal with it and 2 more wins will look very nice in the record books, and a nother bowl trophy as booty. Guns UP Mate#27

It’s a bit different playing outside of Lubbock, isn’t it? This is your first season in the national picture, and for that I’ll congratulate you . . . But until you can maintain top ten status year in and year out (read: Texas & OU) you’re relegated to flash-in-the-pan status . . . Good luck holding on to Leach for next year . . . it turns out happiness IS Lubbock in the rearview mirror!

I’m a TTU fan … but must speak the truth. UT gets up for OU and TAMU, its main rivals. OU for UT and OSU and NEB. This game was one of the rare occasions when we got OU’s undivided attention. Add that the game was played in Norman, OU knows Leach, and the fact that TTU beat OU the last two in Lubbock (07 when Bradford didn’t play and 05 when the refs gave us a ridiculous first down on an Amendola catch).

What am I saying? That against a fired-up OU, the talent disparity showed. Ultimately, a team w/ 4-star and 5-star players should be more talented than one with 2-star and 3-star players.

Hopefully the good season, including TV exposure, will entice better players to TTU.

Here’s a question … OU loses to OSU. TTU and UT win. We rep the B12 South b/c we beat UT. Assume UFla beats Bama. Is UT then #2, doesn’t even win the B12 South (ties w/ us), and gets to the Nat’l Champ game. I’m assuming TTU falls to 7-8 or so after this game. Behind Bama, UFla, OU, UT, USC … maybe PSU, UT.

From espn.com regarding National title hunt:

“One thing is certain: it’s not the Red Raiders, who collapsed in a way 10-0 teams never do. They picked a lovely time to surrender the most points in school history. So while Tech is dispatched back to the Poser Dept., the Texas-Oklahoma debate is on. Big time.”

He had the cards stacked against him because bob stoops knows him oh so well and we are very hard to defeat in our house. Sat just happened to be the sooners day but this year every sat has been the sooners day with the exception of the red river shootout in which we were out played. Not so fast. If Okie State beats OU then Texas Tech would be in the big 12 game. Texas would be going to the National Championship game. Tech is going to drop so low that it won’t matter what happens in the big 12 game.

Alabama remained on top of the standings, a comfortable No. 1 in both the USA Today coaches’ poll and Harris poll, and tops according to the computers.

Texas is close behind Oklahoma in both polls, but has the second-best computer rating. The Longhorns’ BCS average is .9209.

I remember being taught by my high school coaches that you win with class and dignity and you lose with class and dignity. I will never forget how my senior year, our star running back (who made All Ivy League later at Yale, on an academic scholarship) had busted loose on a 60 yard touchdown run but suddenly grabbed his hamstring at the ten yard line with the other team’s safety bearing down on him. Aware that his team was already behind by several touchdowns and fearing a serious injury to our player if he was hit on that hamstring, the opposing coach yelled out “don’t hit him! Let him score!” And the safety stopped and let our guy limp into the end zone.

I am repulsed and disgusted by the lack of class of many of the bloggers on many sports sites nowadays and all the trash talk, vulgarities, personal insults, and talking smack. I strongly suspect that most of these classless idiots (but by no means all) are under 30 years of age.

Perhaps you are right, Mr. Archer. It’s really no contest to match wits with an unarmed man. And I predict that by midnight on January 21, 2009, Mr. Obama will be asking himself why he wanted the job.

We Red Raiders flat out got it handed to us in Norman. There’s simply no other way to put it. Congrats to the Sooners.

Now let’s look at the current situation. Whether you think Tech deserved the number 2 ranking it had or not, they had it. OU dismantled the #2 team in the country (#1 according to the computers). I don’t see how anyone can put Texas above OU in the rankings after that game. Sure, the ‘Horns beat the Sooners, but more recently, Tech beat the ‘Horns. If OU beats OSU (a team Texas barely survived against in Austin) in Stillwater, it would be an absolute crime if they are cheated out of a chance to play in the Big 12 title game and ultimately the BCS championship. As a Raider fan, I certainly hope the Cowboys can pull off the upset, but I just don’t see it happening.

Say what you want all you UT fans, but OU clearly has the better team, no matter what happened in Dallas in early October. You can consider yourselves extremely lucky if the Sooners win Saturday and you somehow stay ahead of them in the BCS standings and get to play in Kansas City.

Keep your heads up, Raider fans. It’s been a fun ride, and there’s still a glimmer of hope. Remember, we thought it was over when we missed the extra point in OT against Nebraska. Then we thought it was over when the UT safety had the ball tipped right to him on the final drive. The OU-OSU game still has to be played, and it’s usually not a cakewalk for the Sooners in that game.

Tech fans, a longhorn fan here. Pay no attention to all those fools belittling TT accomplishments this season. Granted you lost a big one, but, as disappointing as it is you can’t let that affect what your team achieved this season.

For all those fools claiming that TT doesn’t belong with the big ones in the Big 12. That is all BS. Remember the BIg 12 is only what 14 years old? In the history of the league, TT is gotta be in the top 5 of the league, and for sure in the top 3 in the south. Yes, its hasn’t won a league championship yet, but, this season ain’t over yet.

Lastly, I love the way coach Leach coaches. I think he’s unique, and he’s personally responsible for the attention this league has received since his arrival at TT. His big day will come for sure. I feel for coach Ruffin McNeal (sp), you can tell he’s as dedicated a coach as it can be found.

Good luck the rest of the way and for the seasons to come, even when sometimes it might be at the expense of my beloved Longhorns.

    Guns up!

I’m a lifelong Sooner fan and am thankful for Saturday’s win over the Red Raiders, but TT has nothing to be ashamed of. Nothing can take away what Graham Harrel and the rest of the team have done this year. Beating the shorthorns is never easy, but who’s the only team to do it so far this year? I admire and respect Coach Leach, too; he’s good for coaching, good for the NCAA and especially good for TT. Time for all Boomer Sooners to move on and get behind the Crimson and Cream for the showdown at OSU. Go Raiders! Go Sooners!

Tech is a good, hard playing team with smart players and smart coaches.

They just ran into a red hot team on their home turf. Just like when Okla State came to Lubbock.

And, both are pretty good even when they are not hot.

You’re still one of the best teams in the country – in the best conference in the country.

Great season. And, there is still more fun ahead.

    Best wishes,
    Sooner fan.

all of the people that like to talk trash and laugh in our faces should learn some manners

i am so sick of reading the raw, rude, classless comments that I am tempted to leave a Tech fan site. Thats messed up

I do not go to OU and UT websites and talk trash, so I don’t know if any other Tech fans do. But if they do, I apologize for them.
Most of us retain our dignity, even after such a loss.

UT and OU fans, take notes. Tech’s tortillas and goal posts and all of the things you take as ridiculous are traditions and pasttimes at Tech. We don’t ridicule UTs traditions. Go suck on your thumbs and whine about BCS. At least we sit patiently and wait for you to screw up vs A&M
If it doesn’t happen, oh well.

We still have a great team and deserve the same record that keeps the BIG12 south tied at 10-1

Thanks to Larry N., Jerry Breeden, and Rufnek.

ALlLof your posts show that OU fans have more class than most tu fans. If you win next week… I hope OU wins in Miami too.

LJE, you must not have gone to the game in Norman, most of the blogs on here where raider fans are making comments say some pretty ugly things about how the fans acted towards them in Norman. I personally have seen first hand how they act, and classy is far from it, they are possibly the rudest fans in the sport, and not just in football. ou is at the bottom when it comes to class, even when they win.

TexasBorn and TexasQueen are consummate idiots! You better believe those T-sips are always in our face, badmouthing us, win or lose! They hate us! They hate our school, our fans, our team, they never respect us, they’re arrogant as hell, whenever they lose it’s always the refs hosing them, as if outgaining them 321-21 in the first half was all about refs! UT got dominated in that game, and nearly stole it! Simple as that. We got even MORE dominated by an OU team that played lights out and had their best defensive performance of the season. They outplayed and especially outcoached us, never mind having better personnel or any of that.
They won in every phase! UT was lucky to come back agains OU and Tech, and likely wouldn’t be able to beat OU today in a rematch.
AND, if Texas gets to the NC game? Oh my! THAT will be ugly against Florida or a potential rematch with OU!

You are the kind of fan that makes all people I know think badly of zero u. Shut the h— up. You are not the only ones to have ever played the game of football. I beleive that TECH is the only Big 12 team to have been to a bowl game all 12 years of the Big 12. That even means the school in norman. Nothing in norman in on the up and up and never has been since Switzer was there. Shut up.

The post I made was about someone during the game, who had a ticket but chose to stand next to the tech section in the aisle against a wall, shouting obcenities directed to the fans.
I must say, prior to thre game the tailgaters were very good. I was invited by numerous OU tailgaters to join them in the festivities, I thank all of you that did. It was a pleasure to speak to the more responsilble fans at OU, they were there to pull for their team and enjoy the game. As well they should, you have a good team.
I hope that I never am subjected to the classless few that make it bad for everyone including the true die hard fans that pull for their guys, thick or thin, win or lose and walk away knowing that they have had one hell of a good time, and know that they will be back the following home game to do it again with respect.
To all the OU tailgaters that offered your hospitality, Thank You, you are what college football is truly all about

Don’t any of you tu or ou fanatics of hate have jobs or classes to go to? Or would your butt be out the door if your boss saw you blogging on a company computer at work? If you are a college student, then when the hell do you shut up and study? Or are you too hungover to care?

I’m on Thanksgiving vacation from my six figure salary job, and yes, I do have a job that requires far more fairness, courtesy, intelligence, judgment, literacy, and communication skills than many of the boomer and teasipper hate-spewers have displayed here.

During the years of the old SWC, Tech won the Sportmanship Trophy from the SWC office numerous times. I don’t recall that tu ever did. And OU’s football team has one of the lowest graduation rates in the Big 12, while Tech’s is among the highest in the nation.

Gentlemen, give it a rest. If OSU, A&M, Auburn, and Florida State all win this weekend (which could very conceivably happen), then the BCS will become a mud puddle and then you will REALLY have something to get arrogant about.

OU fans were told to be “jacked up” which some may have taken too far. We are not classless fans like Billy said. We are like any other rabid college football fans, that love their team and get into it. The “Snakepit” is real. Tech is a fine school and team. Good luck for the rest of the season. Boomer Sooner!
