Red Raiders move forward with goals still in mind

BY DON WILLIAMS
AVALANCHE-JOURNAL
With its dreams of playing in a national championship game dashed, Texas Tech started on Sunday to focus on the next-best outcomes: A rare 11-win regular season, the chance to at least share a division title and the likelihood of playing in a January bowl game.
The Red Raiders can accomplish each one just by beating Baylor this weekend, but first they have to get over Saturday’s 65-21 loss at Oklahoma that knocked them out of an inside track to the BCS title game. Tech (10-1, 6-1 in the Big 12 Conference) dropped from No. 2 to No. 7 in the BCS standings released Sunday.
The Raiders accomplished a Tech first by starting the season 10-0, then set another record in game 11 — for most points allowed.

Graham Harrell and Texas Tech hope to put the 65-21 loss at the hands of Oklahoma behind them
“The team has accomplished a lot this year,’’ Tech defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill said Sunday. “One game doesn’t make the season. We have a great core of leadership. Our leadership will respond. They responded today.’’
Tech players lifted on Sunday and watched video of their nightmarish night in Norman. They also had a team dinner of traditional Thanksgiving fare. Tech coach Mike Leach, as he often does later in the season, scratched the weekly light workout on Sunday night.
In addition to turkey, still on the table for the Red Raiders is the chance to be only the third Tech team to win 11 games in a season. If they do that, they figure to play a January postseason game for the third time in the last four years — either as an at-large selection to a BCS game or in the Cotton Bowl.
Tech can earn a share of the Big 12 South Division title by winning Saturday, though to make the Big 12 championship game the Raiders need Oklahoma to lose at Oklahoma State.
“There’s a lot of things that we have accomplished as a team that the team can still be proud of, and there’s a lot of season left for this team to accomplish things,’’ McNeill said. “That was the mood of the team (Sunday). They were disappointed, as all of us were. But we have a 24-hour rule. That’s about up. The leaders were ready to move on to the next one.’’

Eric Morris and the Texas Tech offense struggle to a season low 21 points as OU breaks Tech's 12 game win streak
In a game reminiscent of the 60-15 debacle six years ago in Norman, when the Big 12 South title was on the line, the Raiders were mauled on Saturday night. Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford led the Sooners to seven touchdowns and a field goal on their first nine possessions to built a 52-7 lead.
It was 42-7 at the half, after OU tied a school record with a 35-point second quarter.
The Raiders were never in the game after halftime.
Given that his team had won 12 in a row dating to last season — and five straight against ranked teams — Tech coach Mike Leach didn’t take his team task.
“It sours today. It wrecks today. It’s disappointing today,’’ he said. “But it doesn’t wreck what they’ve done. It doesn’t wreck the quality of the things they’ve done and how they’ve overachieved througout the year and how I think they’ll continue to.’’
Both teams had an open date the previous Saturday, and Tech coaches didn’t necessarily second-guess how they’d used the extra week.
“Maybe our guys got body punched a little by our schedule,’’ Leach said, referring to three straight November games against top-10 teams. “We need to be able to prepare and work around it, get up one more time, and so we didn’t. I think we overreacted and over-tried and fell short, but this team’s got a tremendous amount to be proud of. I’m incredibly proud of our group.’’
OU hasn’t lost a Big 12 home game since 2001 and extended its overall home winning streak to 24. It also was senior night for OU seniors, and the Raiders got caught in the crossfire.

Baron Batch and the Red Raiders look to bounce back against Baylor this weekend (John A. Bowersmith/ Avalanche-Journal)
“We had great preparation,’’ McNeill said. “We had two weeks. I thought we had really good practices, especially the first group on defense. The film study for both weeks went great and the preparation into the game.
“I thought the players at the beginning of the game, we tried too hard to do too much. There was some panic. Against a team like Oklahoma, they can take advantage of any mistake you make.’’
OU broke 50 points for the seventh time this season, and Tech was the fourth straight opponent on which the Sooners rolled up at least 58. OU finished with 625 yards total offense, including 299 on the ground. Tech’s rushing defense, ranked 20th and having allowed only one 100-yard rusher before Saturday, let speedy DeMarco Murray go for 125 yards and Chris Brown add 108. Between them, they scored five touchdowns.
The Sooners ran the ball so effectively that Bradford didn’t need to pass a lot — only 19 times — but he completed 14 for 304 yards and four touchdowns.
“It’s sort of like when our offense gets on a roll, they’re hard to stop,’’ McNeill said. “We knew Oklahoma would have the most experienced offensive line we’d faced and the best one, and secondly they had the best corps, ahead of Oklahoma State, at the skill positions. Those two units were playing at the top of their game, and they were on a roll. It’s like our offense does, and they were hard to stop.’’
“There’s a lot of things that we have accomplished as a team that the team can still
be proud of, and there’s a lot
of season left for this team
to accomplish things.”

that was a huge loss but be proud of your team. We horns have had share of bad lucks. And TT’s win against us was and is a legit win regardless of home advantage. Yeah we are considered to be one of the big boys because of marketability and corporate wealth…but bare in mind tech that you have had a good year. And the disappointment you have with that loss was a bit too much. But this is something that you will learn growing up as a big program. The school and fans have to learn how to adjust to all the disappointments. Hence, it is nothing but part of growing up as a program. Look at our rival OU…they have had it. I mean you guys took ‘em out of national championship last year and they even lost that BCS game afterwards. And UT…talking about losing to A&M back to back. Are we making alot of complaints? Maybe some but not most of us. We have other programs like Track, Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Swimming, Rowing, Baseball(all nationally ranked)…and not to mention the other athletes that came back from the Olympics with medals.
I know football is our main money making machine but to be with the big boys, learn how to deal with your upsets in a positive way. That’s how some of us horns view it. Sorry for the loss. I still think you guys are one of the best this season. Keep your guns up…it’s worth it. Hey it’s basketball season guys!!!

JP, thanks for your sincere comments. As a TTU alum and Red Raider to the core, I deeply wanted our team to stay undefeated and bring Lubbock and Tech a National Championship. To be out of the shadow of football traditional powerhouses was a great thing to think about (and still is)…but before I became a Raider, I was born and bred a Texan. I am in agony about the thought of an out of state team representing the Big 12 South. Take care of business this weekend. If OU wins at OSU, I pray the BCS rankings continue to point to UT as the Big 12 South representative.
Hook ‘em Horns! Wreck ‘em Tech!! TEXAS PROUD!!!

No, it’s not basketball season yet. We are in Texas, and in Texas football is #1. We could care less about other sports right now. They’re on the backburner for now.
We have a hell of a football team, and we don’t mope around feeling sorry for ourselves after a loss. We will salvage what we have left this season, which is quite a bit for this program. Coach Leach has this program on the rise. And Tech fans don’t need Horn fans to give us pep talks by the way. I know you mean well, but we have faith in our Red Raiders no matter if they are 0 and 10 or 10 and 0.
You have a great coach and outstanding players, and they are true ambassadors for what college football is all about…But, so do we

Thanks jp for your classy words. You are indeed right about supporting all the programs both athletic and scholastic. Your trash talking UT friends could take a lesson from you on sportsmanship (see other Tech blogs). Tech will be back starting with the Baylor game. I am proud to be a Tech alumni and look forward to a successful conclusion to a great year no matter where we end up. “GUNS UP”.

thanks guys…sorry about my other longhorn brothers…i think they need to chill out. but you know what, you have earned the respect from most of us horns and that they are now reacting as if you guys are going to be a threat. Infact you guys been haunting us and OU for quite sometime now. We are actually impressed that you guys stepped up to the plate instead of A&M. Regardless what happened this year…you have earned our respect and always remember that you have beaten us that not even OU can pull this year. Thrash talk is now becoming more common to our campus because not only having OU and A&M as rivals…we now consider you as one (welcome…i careless what other say). And in spirit of it all…it’s nothing to be really upset about because you now belong with the big brothers. Welcome to the club…and keep it goin’. You guys have won the public…it’s sad how fast they forget. I know next year you guys will do very well again. We made Big 12 south the best and we did it because of having you around. Ignore the media….they are all hypocrites. Now everybody love OU…man…what a bunch of you know what!

Same old Tech. Looks good at home, beats a top team at home every year but when it comes time to go on the road and make something happen – they look like crap. Just about the time all of the Tech fans are brave enough to start sporting their Tech shirts and hats the team shows nothing has really changed. Harrell was so intimidated Saturday night, he wanted to go home to Ennis.

Thank you JP. It is nice to hear pleasant and thoughtful words from a Longhorn fan. We have had a great season, and it has not been a fluke. I usually don’t comment or even read blogs because of all the disgusting comments and language. I really don’t know what has happened to sportmanship these days. I understand about competition and the back and forth jabbing that goes on, but some of the stuff that is written and said about our team and players is ridiculous. Sometimes I feel like we have to beat everyone by 40 pts at their place to get any true credit, and even with that it would still be regarded as a fluke. I think Tech fans are just tired of that. Thank you again for your encouragement and support.

Good words and thoughts from JP.
TTU has a lot to enjoy with this year’s football team. This team accomplished more than any team to date.
And it is a great time of the year as football hits its most exciting time and basketball starts. I am following three TTU teams currently and just yesterday recognized that today, the Women’s Cross Country team is competing in a meet for the National Championship. What fun for TTU !!!

OU delivered a crushing defeat. Chant at end was “overrated” and the crowd was probably right. Tech was overrated at #2.
But this football team is still #1 in terms of over-achievement!
From 2004 – 2008, in the historical polls I could find, OU’s recruiting classes were 6, 4, 8, over 25 and 7. UT, who Tech beat, was 10, 16, 10, 3 and 3. Nebraska, who Tech beat, was over 25, 5, 22, 22 and over 25. A&M, who Tech beat, was 12, 11, 25, 16 and 22. Tech in most polls was never better than 25 (though I recall that one had it in the top 20 one year), and generally between 25-35.
Moreover, on what objective standard should Tech be able to stay in the top 25 every year for the last 7 – 8 years, while Notre Dame, Michigan, UCLA, Florida State, Miami, Nebraska, A&M, Colorado, Arkansas, Pittsburg, Iowa, Tennessee and other “traditional powers,” have not, and often have even had losing seasons.
What is truly amazing is not that Tech was totally dominated by OU, at OU, on a given night.
What is truly amazing is what this team, and Tech over the Leach era, has accomplished, given its geographical and monetary limitations. (Tech supposedly has less people within a 250 mile radius than all but a very few Division I schools and ranks much higher in terms of athletic success than it does in terms of athletic budget).
Wouldn’t you really rather support this group of over-achivers over almost anyone else you can think of?

Devin, come on dude, it would not have mattered where you played ou, Tech was just way outmatched, I could see if maybe it was a close game, but the raiders didn,t even show up. Wasn’t even the same team against Texas. We could say that yall would not have beaten Texas if the game was in Austin, and truth be known you probably wouldn,t have, unlike the tech/ou game, Texas and tech was a close game, where yall palyed saturday night had no impact on the game. Stoops prepared and prepared well for the game, he knew every play yall were running and what type of a defense to run to shut it down. Leach has been using the same hand signals for years, and Stoops knows what they are.

Afterall, we really enjoyed your game and you played us fair.
We followed ur success here in our frat house. And this year is a success for all of us in big 12.

I do appreciate this team. It is something very special. I will say this, it is not over. Reading these comments, I must disagree the time for reflection is not at hand. I personally believe that OU will have trouble in Stillwater (from all of the comments about home field). I have been reading the national papers and I am amazed that Tech is completely eliminated from BCS contention.
I will admit that I was surprised at just how out of sync the team seemed on Saturday, but it will get fixed.
First OU vs OSU is a major rivalry game and anything can happen. An OSU victory Tech is playing in the Big 12 Title game. So right now we need to go and take care of Baylor and get ready for a crazy weekend of football.

I have been, and still am, very proud of Tech’s accomplishments this year. OU played a perfect game. However, something just was not right. Even the broadcasters spoke of it. They mentioned, and we all who were watching closely noticed it, that OU was able to line up correctly at the exact time TTU called the play. It was as if they knew what play was coming next. The broadcasters said someone must have gotten TTU play book. Or perhaps they DID know every one of Leach’s hand signals. If that is true, I give credit to OU for their prep work for the big game. And I fault Leach for using the same hand signals that his former co-staff would know. The players were unfortunately caught in the middle of it all.

Hey! Red Raiders,
Why are you so blue? You don’t need to be. It was just not your day, but OU day. There is always up and down for the teams.
Definitely, you are still in the best position into the Big 12 Championship game among UT, OU, and TTU. OSU lost two games, but UT and TTU were #1 and #2 BSC ranking, and both games were away games for OSU. OU cannot win OSU in Stillwater this week unless they can play like last week against TTU. But, it is still impossible in Stillwater. So, you will be into 12 Championship game eventually after winning against Baylor.
Just be positive Red Raiders! You are in the best position now!

To Sleepless — your #2 comment makes no sense. Check the standings TTU, tu, ou all are 6-1, osu is 5-2. IF osu protects their house and “upsets” ou, and Tech and tu take care of the cellar dwellers, then the standings as of Saturday night will be TECH 7-1, ut 7-1, ou & osu 6-2 THEREFORE WE (the PRIDE OF LUBBOCK) RED RAIDERS would be in the Big 12 Championship game by virtue of our victory over tu … the tie breaker only goes to the BCS standings if 3 or more are tied.

Again why the UT people so bored? Anyway we know life is not fair but what a shame it will be to play a 7-4 Ole Miss or LSU in that dump the Cotton Bowl. That was a great bowl in 85 or 55 but now days it is second tier! Our team, fans, alums and University deserve better than what could happen. I know we have games left to shake this BCS mess up and still get what we deserve OU loss or not. Yet, there is a huge chance that we will be punished and not rewarded to what has been a great year and a rising program. We know every year that we will qualify for some bowl game and we must not take that for granted but at the same time we have earned and closed in the last few years on higher goals and we have done all we can do to reach those goals. Assuming a win over Baylor and all three teams are tied tell me what else do you have to do to get the BCS pay day? Move to the Pac 10 and get beat on the road to an unranked team and not win the conference outright? move to the Big 10 and not play in a championship game for your league because your league does not have one? Or better yet move to the Moutain West and go undeafted every year (except the one year TCU is loaded!)? It is just a shame and I hope the football gods will strike one last magic wand and put the Red where they deserve in the BCS bowl bonaza and not the ghetto bowl in fair park! Was it 1994 when Tech lost and everyone else lost and we still won the old SWC and the old school Cotton Bowl bid? We need some of that old school history to happen again to keep us out of that old school bowl! Go Tech!

Anyone who watched the OU vs TTU game knows OU could have scored 100 if they wanted. Don’t forget the OU backup QB was in the game when OU attempted the 4th down run at the one yard line in an attempt to get over 70 points.
