Loss doesn’t take away from Tech’s achievements

NORMAN, Okla. – The final tally sheet told an ugly story Saturday night.

A Texas Tech team that had a chance to clinch the Big 12 South Division for the first time gave up 625 yards, with 299 coming on the ground. A defense known to rise up reliably at key times this season yielded seven touchdowns on Oklahoma’s eight red-zone visits. An offensive line that had been almost airtight, allowing only five sacks all season, gave up four. An offense averaging 48 points went 1-for-13 on third down.

There was nothing redeeming for the Red Raiders in a 65-21 loss against the Sooners that ended Tech’s hopes of playing for the BCS national championship. In fact, the game looked remarkably like the 60-15 mangling the Red Raiders endured here in 2002, when they came to Norman for a de-facto Big 12 South championship game.

That would suggest the Raiders haven’t made much progress in six years.

But that’s far from the truth.

Otherwise, Tech couldn’t have won 12 games in a row. If the Raiders are no better now than they were then, they wouldn’t have beaten three ranked teams in a row – including a No. 1 and another top-10 – to arrive at No. 2 in the rankings this deep into November. No, they’ve steadily improved the talent base and supplemented it with depth over the last decade. That’s part of the reason they’ve spent a month basking in the glow of a national spotlight.

Saturday night reinforced two truths in the Big 12: Home-field advantage is huge, something the Red Raiders already knew because it’s paid off for them in Lubbock. And Oklahoma employs it better than most. For two weeks, everyone heard that a Bob Stoops team almost never loses in Norman.

That holds true in September and October, and one of these years Tech might actually come here again in early fall. Last week, in asking a Tech coach why OU had handled Tech so easily several times this decade, besides the Sooners’ talent, he pointed to how late in the season the teams usually play. It was Tech’s regular-season finale six of the previous eight years and the next-to-last game another time.

The Sooners are usually playing for something more than just a W – to win the Big 12 South, to stay in the national title race, something substantial. On Saturday, it was senior night, all the more reason the Raiders would run into a buzzsaw.

The loss crushed Tech’s hopes of playing for a national championship, but there’s still a lot out there. Barring an upset this week, the Raiders are looking at an 11-1 season, which has happened only twice. They could do as Kansas did last year, possibly gain an at-large invitation to a BCS game without playing in the conference title game.

The worst that happened to the Raiders on Saturday is that they never did anything to stem the tide. It was 42-7 at halftime, and it didn’t get any better. That being the case, Tech stands to take a hard fall today in the polls – to somewhere between No. 7 and No. 9 – behind other one-loss teams such as Penn State and Southern Cal.

The Raiders would have given the voters a reason not to drop them so far had they mounted one of the comebacks that they’ve made so many times the last few years.

But they didn’t show something, not in the first two quarters or the last two, for the first time when it counted all season.

The fact that the Raiders finally came up empty in a game that counted, though, shouldn’t diminish the fact that they made their perfect season last as long as it did.

Well…it is the morning after. The sun came up this morning, I am breathing (didn’t die from an alcoholic coma), but the memory of the Sooner raping here in Norman still lingers. The pounding in my head is an ever present reminder that the night was real and the dream is over.

However, I will have to say in all my years as a Tech fan, I had never been more excited than those moments before kickoff. Because in those moments there was the reality that Tech and a national title were within reach.

As we approached the stadium there was a buzz in the air by everyone. Stoops had called his fans out saying that they were fair weather fans and tonight was the night for THEM to come and play. As we walked inside the stadium and onto the field I knew then that we could be in serious trouble. The game hadn’t even started and it was so loud I couldn’t hear the person next to me.

The atmosphere was electric just like in the Texas game. But this time, it was not in our favor. Home field has played a HUGE role in the Big XII this season and tonight was no different. For those of you who have never been to Owen Field, the stands practically sit on the field as there is virtually no sideline it is so narrow. The players can hear ever insult hurled in their direction. Standing on the sidelines we saw fans throwing ice, tortillas, and other sorts of debris at our players as the player bench sits only about 4-5 feet from the wall that separates them from the fans. Ugly.

The Raiders did not look sharp. In fact, they just looked flat. The calmness and business-as-usual look that this team typically exhibits during the game, may have actually been that deer-caught-in-the-headlights look oft seen on a country road prior to being hit by a truck.

While Tech may have received a beating from OU, and their chances of a BCS at-large bid now gone, I am excited to have been a part of this season with Tech. It has been quite the ride. With a little help from OSU next week in Stillwater, Tech can work it’s way back into the BCS picture. But, I am not holding my breath. “Bedlam Week” next week in Oklahoma can get nasty, but after what I saw last night, OU is prepared to bring the hammer. They can taste it now.

As for me? I am going to take a couple of Tylenol, drink plenty of fluids, get some breakfast, and make the 6-hour trek back to good ole West Texas. Was it all worth it? Your damn skippy it was. Because for a moment the dream was still alive.

We got a good ole butt stomping. We got beat everywhere but it would seem to me that the coaching preparation should have been a little different for this one. OU has stopped Techs offense in ,most of the previous games. They let us catch and then punish and tackle us. It would seem that going up field more from the outset would of loosen them up a bit. As far as our defense, they looked like the Dallas Cowboys defense. Using arm tackles and hit them but not wrap up. Our defense watched as one player hit and let the ball carrier go but were not prepared because they had given up on the play thinking the person was tackled. We saw players hit and lay on the grould watching them run up field. In all other games if we missed a tackle those players were scrambling to get up to make the tackle again. Ruffin, it’s time to get back to BASICS. Tackle, using basics and if they don’t , get someone who will. We may not be able to win with less talent but we can live with losing if that player or team gave 100% all the time.

Still behind ya after 25 years and still lovin Tech.

One, Great job to Coach Stoops. Earned back his ‘Big Game Bob’ status and its no joke. Making the adjustments in the bye week paid off big time and he led his Sooners to an impressive victory.

Two, OU defense. Those guys are the ONLY ones who could hold our talented offense, rattle our QB, penetrate our line, and force big turnover plays. We are not used to having to punt.

Three, OU fans. I could not have been more wrong about home field advantage. They lived up to legend and made it very uncomfortable. You deserve the glory as well as the team.

FOUR, TEXAS TECH RED RAIDERS, I salute your sportsmanship. Look back at penalties. OU had alot of dirty and blatant personal fouls. (particularly the horse collar on Crabs’ first catch) They played well, but not with professionalism.
It was not a pretty first half that set the game in motion against us. We had penalties, but we took the game in stride. And though we did not actually show our true skills, we showed incredible humility and class in a devastating loss.

It seems to me that Texas Tech’s bowl appearances have only been getting better over the years. It’s a shame that you cannot embrace the accomplishments of this program over these past years (and particularly this team this year). Instead, it would appear that you are nothing more than a poison to the program and the community–a shallow, fair weather fan who only wants to enjoy the benefits from the team’s successes, but does not want to bear the burden of its losses. It’s time to own up. Are you a fan, or just a parasite?

The Raiders have given us a season unlike any that have been seen in Lubbock in any of our lifetimes. We have personally witnessed our beloved Raiders playing in the national spotlight week after week. We have seen the development of a program from a possible Alamo Bowl team in most good years to one that would be “disappointed” if it ends up in the Cotton or Holiday bowls, because despite this loss, it deserves better. We have witnessed perhaps one of the greatest football minds (Coach Mike Leach) in recent history develop a system that everyone else must duplicate. One so potent that make no mistake, will have several teams contacting our school for permission to speak with him at the conclusion of our season. We also witnessed what many many teams in college football already knew. Nobody wants to play in Norman, Oklahoma when a National Title is at stake. Most who go there, leave licking there wounds, make no mistake, their fans, as is the case with ours has been this season, are a powerful force to overcome at their home field. Nobody wants to give Bob Stoops two weeks to prepare for them. We got our tails kicked but we now have work to do. We still have a minimum of two games to play, Baylor and our bowl game. Plus we may still have a shot at the Big 12 Championship game if we beat Baylor and Oklahoma State beats Oklahoma. We could potentially finish our season 12-1 or 13-1. So, rathar than hang your head, lift it proudly, instead of being down on our Raiders, lets get behind them and support them as never before, and as for next year, lets support Tech in their efforts to keep Coach Leach at Texas Tech so we can have more of the success that he has spoiled us with since his arrival here. Thank you Red Raiders,

( W 3 – L 1 ) We were an under dog in each game except for being a 3 pt favorite over OK St which we beat by 36. Two pt under dog to Kansas ( 19 ) on the road which we beat by 44. Beating # 1 TX by an unbelievable 1 minute 29 second drive for a TD. OK came out fighting mad. The 4 personal fouls by OK showed it. We are 10-1 and tied with OK, and TX ( tie breaker over TX ) with the best record in Big 12 which is the best conference this year. TECH played their hearts out and we still have a chance to win Big 12. OK has to beat OK St on the road. We already beat OK State. OK State is fast like OK, so we will see if OK can get up again. OK is a very Big Program. They usually get many of the best TX players. We have a some walkons like the Kicker Matt Williams who won a kicking contest ( rent free ) at half time by kicking a 30 yard field goal. His mom called him as he was walking off the field to congratulate him. He told her he would have to call her back because the TECH coach wanted to talk with him. He is now perfect in extra pts and 2 of 3 on field goals. Wes Welker, now playing for the Patriots, from OK but just to small ( like Eric) to play for the OK Sooners. He set many records for Tech, Big 12 and set National record for punt run backs for TD. TECH will take these guys. Humbled but The Dream is still alive ! Proud of the Raiders and TECH. We have a great group of Alumni here in DC and have enjoyed watching on prime time TV.

However, if anybody had to choose between who the best team was OU or Texas – who would most people choose? Thats right – The Sooners. Tech – you have a good team – go kick Baylor’s butt and when the Texas fans get on here – keep reminding them who won the game. They keep saying that they dropped an interception – fact of the matter was Tech dominated that game – many more yards – and in the end we all need breaks and Tech delivered – last night’s game was just MEN vs boys – when OU comes to play – they are the best team in the country. “DEFEFENSE IS THE KEY”

OU played a tough defense game and my hats off to them. NO excuses…it wasn’t dirty play…it wasn’t the refs. What some people say is dirty is good hard nose football.

It is a good defense that wins championships. Tech doesn’t have a defense! I know everyone says look at the last two game. Tech gets up for UT and OSU. They probably played a bit over their heads. I am not saying Tech doesn’t have the talent. They don’t have a good enough defensive coordinator. Not one single blitz the whole game. No pressure on Bradford. They knew how good of a QB he was and still let him pick apart the Tech defense. After the half…did Tech make any adjustments? None! All the Tech coaches say is tackle better and execute better. That is not making adjustments.

I have been saying for years as well as most sports writers…until Tech gets a defense…they will never compete for a title. This year may have seemed like competing…but a UT’s dropped interception and a possible loss at Nebraska…this easily could have been a 7-4 team. Defense is the key and I guess we shall just sit back and see how many more years before Tech gets a quality defensive staff in Lubbock to support one of the top offenses in the nation.

Alabama remained on top of the standings, a comfortable No. 1 in both the USA Today coaches’ poll and Harris poll, and tops according to the computers.

Texas is close behind Oklahoma in both polls, but has the second-best computer rating. The Longhorns’ BCS average is .9209.

Oklahoma is at .9125. But the Sooners are at Oklahoma State (9-2) on Saturday and should get a boost if they emerge with a win.

So, for Tech to accomplish what they already have this season, I think it’s spectacular. Because of this, I’m not disappointed at all with what has happened so far. We Red Raiders flat out got it handed to us in Norman. There’s simply no other way to put it. Congrats to the Sooners.

Now let’s look at the current situation. Whether you think Tech deserved the number 2 ranking it had or not, they had it. OU dismantled the #2 team in the country (#1 according to the computers). I don’t see how anyone can put Texas above OU in the rankings after that game. Sure, the ‘Horns beat the Sooners, but more recently, Tech beat the ‘Horns. If OU beats OSU (a team Texas barely survived against in Austin) in Stillwater, it would be an absolute crime if they are cheated out of a chance to play in the Big 12 title game and ultimately the BCS championship. As a Raider fan, I certainly hope the Cowboys can pull off the upset, but I just don’t see it happening.

Say what you want all you UT fans, but OU clearly has the better team, no matter what happened in Dallas in early October. You can consider yourselves extremely lucky if the Sooners win Saturday and you somehow stay ahead of them in the BCS standings and get to play in Kansas City.

Keep your heads up, Raider fans. It’s been a fun ride, and there’s still a glimmer of hope. Remember, we thought it was over when we missed the extra point in OT against Nebraska. Then we thought it was over when the UT safety had the ball tipped right to him on the final drive. The OU-OSU game still has to be played, and it’s usually not a cakewalk for the Sooners in that game.

Sat. nite’s beating by OU is very similar EXCEPT TT is far better than that score. No excuses, we simply were badly beaten. Tech will be back next year IN LUBBOCK. Will that make a difference? Most likely.

TT has UT’s number now and I am thinking that whether or not we play in Ausitn will no longer matter. The Raiders will be their thorn in their side from now on. The Raiders belong in the upper tier of the Big 12 and UT cannot handle that.

Why are UT people on here I never understand? I do not waste my time on UT sites trying to push Tech I have better things to do but whatever. The orange bloods can cry about a missed int and how they lost in the last second but while we are on the subject of what happened and the ifs and buts of that night, that game never ever comes down to any late heroics or lack there of if not for that punt return earlier in the game.

If you watched the damn game not 1 but 2 clear blocks in the back and another possible one on the Horns punt return for a TD. One official who was actually watching but had a bad view had the guts to make the call but they pulled the flag as his angle was bad. With all the TV cameras it was clear as day that those two illegal blocks happened. That TD saved their tails as without it they were dead in the water as Tech was burying them on Defense. The point is the Raiders won the game even despite that if and but and for every if and but you always can drag up another if and but. Yes, it was an exciting finish and yes UT blew an int, but that game is a 4 touchdown game that UT never comes back from if not for that int. If memory serves it made it 22-6 and if all holds to form then at 22-0 in third and Tech’s offense doing what it wants this conversation is not happening!

UT beat OU in Dallas Tech had no such luck in Norman and that if and but should put the Raiders on equal if not ahead of UT instead Tech will be punished for loosing late and the reward is the same neutral stadium that UT beat OU Dallas. If and but Texas is not better than Tech in 08 no matter which if and but you take! Tech gets punished because we are the last to post a L that is a shame. Remind me how USC and Florida get beat to unranked teams and are not punished as bad? The system is bad but fact remains OU deserves to be #2 and Tech deserves a better fate. If and buts be damned!

What I am trying to figure out is this… 10-1 (Texas, OU, Tech) or possibly 11-1 (same folk) … Did I fall asleep and some how Tech has only one season of this? I read the blogs and they read like an Obit… Seriously, this should be a Birth announcement or at least an anniversary! Our recruitment roster reads like a 4 star restaurant of players, our “Backup” QB plays like Farve and we morn our perfect season as if it would be our last. Our team has consistently improved in play and consistency. What other college has enjoyed bowl games every year? Heck, we say it as an after thought now, “We will play Baylor and then our bowl game”. I MAY be a bit blind in my understanding, but age acquires wisdom, knowledge, and in the cases of Universities – ALUM. So, TECH (long may she reign) is a glorious 85 years old, OU – 33 years OLDER, A&M 47, and the grand old lady UT 84 years our Senior. Lubbock has changed just in the last decade from when I was there, she has had a face lift and has seen growth within the Academic world – Education, Architecture, Engineering, Law and Medicine are all highly classed in Lubbock. SO, Tech Alum, and all you who really don’t have a vote listen to our battle cry – FROM HERE IT’S POSSIBLE! We will learn from our elders mistakes, and we will grow and become better. Clear a place at the Big Boy table, Tech is taking a seat. – GUNS UP BABY!!!
(Currently an OSU and A&M Fan until after this weekend)

Wins for OU and UT are just more numbers in a column. The Tech victory over Texas was a game for the ages. Long after OU has forgotten its win over TT folks in Lubbock (and beyond) will still say things like “I was there!” and “Remember back in ‘08?” Savor this, you guys were on the right side in one of the best college games ever played. Thank you, thank you thank you.

ou 22pts less away from home………you discount how high ou was for tech and the fact tech was playing it’s 4th straight ranked team. we beat 1, 9 and 23. losted to 5
ut beat 1 12 and losted to us and also beat mizz…..ou losted to texas and beat 2 and who else?

your arch rival is no joke and is laying for you!!!! better hope you do not get a dose of what we got last saturday–the ut fans would love it. tech would love it because it would put us in the title game.

i do have a big problem if that happened and ut went to the ncs while they did not win their conference and losted head to head…nobody can convince me that is right.

billy, i disagree that we could only move to 5, there will not be any 2 loss teams in the top 7. if bama gets hammered they could fall as far as we did……this tech team would beat bama, pennstate utah easy, next ut ou usc would be good games on neutral sites and florida is tough…………..lots of football left, but i really see osu beating ou, ut finally handling the ags, florida handling bama badly and damn usc and their national media machine jumping ut….florida/ usc or ut close for ncs if ou loses……….

Devin, I don’t know how this will all play out, I just hope it doesn’t play out in ou’s favor, I’m just glad thatthere are two teams from Texas in the top 10. The best players in the nation come from Texas, just ask Stoopid, I mean Stoops, a large number of his recruits are from Texas. I am a proud Texan and am proud of what the Raiders have accomplished and look forward to more good games in the future. The best game I have seen all year was between Texas and Tech, that was a damn good game, and that my friend is what the fans want. HOOK EM HORNS……GUNS UP RAIDERS…………..ou SUCKS…………………
