Ugly as it was, Texas Tech women’s basketball coach Kristy Curry was happy to escape United Spirit Arena on Friday night with a win.
A tough Lamar defense forced the Lady Raiders to rummage up any offense they could find. And they found freshman Jordan Barncastle and senior Dominic Seals once again, each finishing with a double-double to lead Tech to a 59-50 win in front of an announced crowd of 8,303.
Barncastle finished with identical numbers from the previous game against Washington State (14 points, 13 rebounds) in her first start and Seals added 12 points and 10 rebounds.
“The best thing about tonight is it’s a win,” Curry said. “But credit them and say, Hey, ugly counts tonight.’ So we’ll just have to turn the page and get ready for Sunday.”
Tech (3-0) began to pull away with a 12-point lead midway through the second half after leading 31-25 at the half. But Lamar’s outside shooting from Nikki Williams and Emily Spickler pulled the Lady Cardinals within three points, 43-40, with eight minutes left – part of an 11-3 run by Lamar.
Williams finished with 18 points to lead Lamar (1-1) and Spickler had 11.
But Tech answered with a run of its own – 14-5 – to go up 56-45 with less than four minutes to play. Barncastle had six of her points during the run and Tiny Henderson hit her first 3-pointer of the season as the shot clock expired to put the game out of reach for Lamar.
“(Barncastle) just spanked us tonight,” said Lamar head coach Larry Tidwell, who is a friend of Barncastle’s family and tried to recruit her in high schol while he was an assistant at TCU. “That’s a true freshman out there. So she’s going to be an outstanding player.”
The 6-foot-2 freshman was the only other “outstanding” player, next to Tilmila Martin who had 11 points, on the court, Curry said. The Lady Cardinals used a 1-2-2 zone defense to confuse Tech’s forwards in the first half, holding Seals to three attempts and only one field goal.
Tech attempted seven shots in the paint and 17 from outside the arc, making only four 3-pointers in the opening half.
The halftime adjustments did very little, even though the Lady Raiders attempted 17 shots from inside six feet of the basket, but made only five.
“I never felt like we did a lot of the things we had been working on.” Curry said. “We need the ball to go inside. And when we did go inside, for whatever reason, we didn’t do a very good job of finishing. We looked like we had butterfingers a lot of the time tonight.”
Both teams played with short benches. Tech had nine players available and Lamar had only 10.
Junior forward Ashlee Roberson will return Sunday against Texas-Arlington, giving Tech at least one more player while Jordan Murphree and Kaylan Talley recover from injuries. Neither is expected to be back until late December.
