Tech men off to record-setting start

In his first full season as Texas Tech’s head coach, Pat Knight is having quite a year.

The Red Raiders have set records in two of the first three games.

In the opener, Tech beat St. Francis (Pa.) by 34 points, the largest margin of victory for a Tech coach in his first full season.

Thursday night’s 167-115 victory over East Central (Okla.) was filled with record-breaking performances.

Tech’s point total was the sixth-highest in NCAA history. The combined points (282) were tied for eighth all-time, while Tech’s 90 second-half points were the 12th-most in a half.

The Red Raiders didn’t set any NCAA records, but many Big 12 Conference records fell.

Tech broke seven conference records, all for points, field goals attempted or field goals made in a half or game.

The Red Raiders also broke at least six school records. Eight different players set career highs in scoring, including Trevor Cook, who led everyone with 20 points. Ten Tech players scored in double figures, including walk-on Wally Dunn of Midland, who finished with 16 points and shot 4 of 5 from 3-point range.

While the offensive numbers were impressive, Knight said he’ll still have plenty of teaching tools heading into today’s game against Eastern Kentucky.

“From a defensive standpoint, it was not good,” Knight said. “They were just coming down — it was like Loyola Marymount-Oklahoma back when I was in high school when that game was in the 130s-140s. We kind of buckled down and I think they only had 10 points by the second time out of the second half. I’ll be honest with you guys, though, that was a new one for me.

“From a defensive standpoint, tomorrow we’ll have to really hit Eastern Kentucky and get their mind frame back to normal basketball.”

The Colonels (1-1) won’t run anything similar to the Division II Tigers.

In its first two games, Eastern Kentucky has scored 123 points. (Tech hit that mark with 9:19 to play against East Central).

The Colonels have allowed 101 combined points in a loss to Florida International and a win against Winston-Salem State.

One good sign for Tech was the return of the shooting touch from Alan Voskuil. After struggling from 3-point range in the first two games, Voskuil hit his first four against East Central and, if he listens to Knight, could have fixed his early season struggles.

“He’s just got to let the game come to him,” Knight said. “I told him to just drive, get layups in the first five minutes and then you can get your jump shots. Alan started cold the last couple of games because he’s shooting threes right off the bat when your legs are cold.”
