Raiders set records in romp

Texas Tech’s first game of the Legends Classic may not have been legendary, but it was historic.
The Red Raiders, playing a little more than a scrimmage against Division II East Central (Okla.), nearly reached their season average in points scored – by halftime. They undoubtedly set numerous first-half records (Tech doesn’t list records by half), then shattered them in the second half.

Trevor Cook (24) scored 20 points in Texas Tech's 167-115 win over East Central (Okla.) on Thursday at United Spirit Arena.
Tech jumped out to a 77-57 halftime lead – nine points shy of its season average – and cruised Thursday to a 167-115 win in front of an announced crowd of 5,505 at United Spirit Arena.
Tech head coach Pat Knight said his team can get use from a game like this, even one that was out of control long before halftime.
“The first thing that was good is we’re trying to push the ball up and this was good practice for that,” Knight said. “We were able to push it up, in front of a crowd, and that’s a lot of points to score against anybody. From that standpoint … I thought was good practice for us.”
No doubt, the Red Raiders set numerous marks in the opening 20 minutes.
Check the numbers:
• 28 field goals
• 51 field goal attempts
• 17 assists
• 10 steals
• 11 offensive rebounds
They then broke most of them in the second half
• 39 field goals
• 62 field goal attempts
• 18 assists
• 8 steals
• 15 offensive rebounds
A record that didn’t fall, however, was largest margin of victory. That honor remains a 72-point blowout (107-35) against Nicholls State in 2002.
“Wow, that was fun, wasn’t it?” East Central head coach Terry Shannon said. “… We want to play an up-tempo game and force teams to play our tempo. We didn’t have to force them. They went with us and, boy, shot the ball well.”
