Tech football drawing unparalleled attention

BY DON WILLIAMS
AVALANCHE-JOURNAL
“America’s Team,’’ a term first applied by an NFL Films executive, resides 300 miles to the east. The title has stuck to the Dallas Cowboys, through the glory years and the glum ones, for nearly three decades.
“America’s College Football Team’’? This year, it might be Texas Tech. The description seems apt, if such a title can be won based on nothing more than this month alone.
The attention the Red Raiders have milked from a 10-0 start and No. 2 national ranking is unprecedented for Tech, whose supporters sometimes complain that their team gets short shrift within the state, let alone nationally.
Well. Not now.
The New York Times, just in the first two weeks of November, wrote a half dozen staff stories on Tech.
“I think Tech generally has been undercovered, and part of that is they’re a little bit remote,’’ said Pete Thamel, who covers national college sports for the Times. “If it were in Philly, it would be a lot easier to get there and write about it. But they are the darling of college football this year. They are the single biggest story in college football. There’s no doubt about it.’’
Of the Times’ multiple stories, Tech coach Mike Leach said, “The fact that it’s that far away, it’s very flattering to know that they’re interested in what we’re doing out here.’’
They’re not the only ones.
The Raiders’ success has even spilled beyond the confines of sports-specific entities. A producer for CBS newsmagazine “60 Minutes” ventured to Lubbock for the Nov. 8 Tech-Oklahoma State game and stuck around for several days to get a feel for the town.
Last Friday, “60 Minutes’’ correspondent Scott Pelley, a former A-J employee and Tech College of Mass Communications Hall of Fame member, taped a segment with Leach. The piece is tentatively planned to air in late December, Tech officials said.
USA Today is planning a story on how Tech’s success is resonating in the city of Lubbock. And lately, when the subject turns to college football on ESPN, it’s almost impossible not to see clips on Tech and the suddenly famous triumvirate of Leach, quarterback Graham Harrell and flanker Mike Crabtree.
The Times’ Thamel said those three have been fertile ground for stories, but make no mistake: Winning is what’s gotten the Raiders this much press.
“If Washington State (a 1-10 team) was doing what (the Red Raiders) were doing, we would be giving them the same amount of coverage,’’ Thamel said.
The combination of Tech’s offense averaging 48 points a game and back-to-back games in Lubbock matching top-10 teams has been a boon to the Saturday night “ESPN on ABC’’ college football series.
The Tech-Texas game on Nov. 1 averaged a 7.5 rating and almost 8.59 million households, making it ABC’s fifth most-viewed and seventh highest-rated regular-season game ever. One week later, the Tech-Oklahoma State game — placed in a split-national slot alongside a Cal-Southern Cal game — averaged a 5.3 rating and a 6.02 million households.
“Both of those are very strong audience numbers,’’ ESPN spokesperson Mike Humes said. “The success of the Big 12 and Texas Tech has been tremendous for the sport and for our coverage.’’
Veteran announcer Brent Musburger, who was in Lubbock to do both games, told Tech officials it was the first time he’d ever covered games from the same stadium two weeks in a row.
Leach handled the lion’s share of interviews sought with the Red Raiders, such as Wednesday, when he was on with ESPN Radio’s Colin Cowherd. He’s also been on with national hosts Scott Van Pelt and Jim Rome and done “College Football Live.’’
“We’ve turned down quite a bit, too, local stations, but from across the country — literally from Raleigh to Seattle,’’ Tech spokesman Chris Cook said, “just because we can’t fit them in. We’ve never had that problem before. It’s a great problem to have.’’
Leach is known to worry about the potential for distraction being a detriment to his players, but what about to himself?
Asked if he could become distracted by all the outside obligations, Leach said, “A little, but I figure it’s better to have (the players) insulated. So given the choice, I’d rather they’re protected.’’

Here’s a good Texas expression for you shorthorn Sally–”go soak your head.” Raider Nation is spreading not just across the State but across the U.S. It must be sad to know that all of UT’s big athletic budget cannot BUY the kind of press and accolades that TTU is obtaining. America loves the underdog, and TTU has the longest active winning streak in the nation and has beaten three top twenty teams in three weeks period, and after Saturday, it will be #1 UT (dominated!), OSU #8 (spanked) and #5 OU (silenced).
LONG LIVE RAIDER NATION!

This is one exciting season and a HUGE game.
Here’s what I pray will happen Saturday:
1. Tech will beat OU.
2. Tech will maintain the longest winning streak in college football (and set a few other records, I imagine).
3. Tech will clinch the Big 12 South Championship.
4. Tech will be ranked #1 in all polls.
5. Tech will be #1 in the BCS Rankings.
6. Tech will have a great shot at playing in and winning the National Championship.
7. Graham Harrell’s performance will clinch the Heisman Trophy.
8. Michael Crabtree’s performance will earn a trip to New York with him as one of the top five Heisman vote-getters, and 6 will invite 5 up on the podium with him.
9. Michael Crabtree will secure his second Biletnikoff Award.
10. Coach Leach will win Coach of the Year.
11. Michael Crabtree will be drafted in the first 5 spots in the NFL draft.
12. Tech will receive the respect it deserves.
13. Coach Leach will re-up for a long time, and he will never have to worry where the money will come from for his next trip to the Der.
14. Stadium expansion will begin on the East Side.
15. Brent Musburger, Chris Fowler, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit, and Desmond Howard will all get apartments at Lynnwood.
16. And we will all live happily ever after at The Next Level with 4- and 5-star recruits.
I don’t know that there has ever been more possible from one (more) win. GO TECH!

The whorns are simply setting themselves up for a huge gloat/moral victory when TTU is finally, whenever it happens, beaten in a football game.
Their’s is the same verbage that was seen as the collie station team begain their loosing ways vs TTU…I am surprised that the whorns started talking it so soon. But there are similarities, both teams lose ‘big’ games on a last minute pass from an Air Raid qb.
Funny thing is that there is the possibility of an upset come Thanksgiving…the world of football would laugh for a week at least.

Regardless of the out come on Sat, Texas Tech has changed the face of the Big 12 South. OU and UT have vacuumed up the majority of talent in OK and TX. This is about to change. Texas Tech will most likely win over Baylor and whom ever they are paired with in a BCS bowl. Remember they were picked #12-#15 respectfully during the preseason. Expectations have been surpassed, TV coverage has been phenomenal and Texas Tech will reap the fruits of this season all spring and summer.
For the record…

We WILL keep this zone going first of all and not let it break down, and at the same time be cool and calm about everything cause i know for a fact the Sooner fans will be on their feet throughout the whole game. It’s clear that weve been preparing for this moment for a long time, weve seen the failures, weve been thru the beatings, we have lost our minds at times (MIKE LEACH’S LAST YEARS REF SPILL) but now its judgement day. Of course Bob Stoops has only lost 2 games at home, of course they score alot of points give them credit this game wouldnt be this huge if they were not as good as a team that they are now but at the end of the day to be this “BEST” you have to beat the “BEST” consistently. I believe this teams preparation is superb to its finest leading to every detail that needs to be addressed. Tech prepares every battle with a better that average game plan, let the sooner fans yell, scream, flip us off, cuss us out but at the end of the day this is what the Red Raiders do and play for “TO CUT THE LEGS OFF THE DOUBTERS ONE WEEK AT A TIME” GO RED RAIDERS, AND WRECKEM TECH, CHEERING ALL THE WAY FROM NEW ORLEANS, LA.

I can’t believe Stoops stooped to ask the fans to holler throughout the game when Harrell drives the ball on their poor injured defense.
That says alot. He obviously has more respect for TTU than the horns and sooners fans that have a knack for talking trash during their weeks of humiliation and anticipation.
One thing is for sure. Tech fans have lived up to the team’s expectations. Despite the media and bitter UT supporters hype and hate, we all have remained classy and retained good sportsmanship. Of course, I realize while on a winning streak that lasts over a year, it is unlikely to be fuming like the UT fans have been on this site.
But we also have kept level heads. Our players are great men, I can tell. They keep focused and don’t get ahead of themselves.
Tech fans can’t helpt but to look ahead at what could be, but we have not been rubbing anyone’s nose in it. We let the scores and stats do the talking.

42-15
Everyone outside of Lubbock knows that Tech fans are the worst in the big 12.
Over the last 60 years Tech has always tried to keep up with Texas and try to compete with Texas. Tech finally has a good year and all of a sudden people from West Texas believe that Tech is the next big thing.
You better pray and pray hard that OU doesn’t beat Tech, because
a loss to OU will drop Tech into a second tier bowl game. A one loss Texas team will go to a BCS game, a one loss Tech team will not.
Is it fair? Well yes it is.

We’ve strayed from talking about THE game.
We’ve EARNED our day in the sun. Tech has progressively inched up each for many years, and it’s our turn now. And Tech athletes have one of the highest graduation rates in the country.
Colt said all his HS classmates attend Tech. Wonder if he’s having 2nd thoughts about turning Leach down. Wouldn’t that have been something had McCoy and Harrell been on the same team.!!!
Texas Born, you and some of your UT compadres are like the French. You can’t admit your glory days have reached the pentacle, and your best is in the past. Afterall, you inherited it from Darrel Royal, and didn’t really earn yourselves. I gather from some of your blogs you now live in Florida. I can understand why: nobody in the real Texas can stand you anymore. You can have IS-10 and south, and we’ll take the rest of the country.
We don’t have the huge land-grant funds, but we’ve made the big leagues anyway such as retired alum CEOs of AT&T, TI, et al. (Someday, the courts will say the land grants were INTENDed for ALL higher education in the state.) We don’t have to buy loyalty. If UT is so great, why can’t you attract without the huge pay-out like $900k. Bob Knight returned his salary one year saying his team didn’t win enough for that salary. That is indeed really unusual, but that’s the caliber of people Tech attracts across the whole campus.
So, toot your French horn and move over. Go Raiders.!!!

Now I hate to be rude about T-sippers, but I’m afraid I must get my two cents in. Austin is a lovely town in a beautiful part of the state. I was accepted to UT out of Monterey High School in Lubbock, and that’s where I began my college experience. I hated UT. Hippies everywhere, an incredibly wide assortment of really unattractive girls, and a lot of arrogance. I transferred to Tech, and I absolutely loved it. Not many hippies in the Hub City, the most beautiful girls in the college world inside and out, and the nicest people you will ever meet. Lubbock is a great place to live. Texas Tech is a great school for normal people. We owned the Longhorns this year in football. Texas Born In reference to the overall record, there was a time when Darrel Royal would hoard all of the best players in the state just to keep them from other teams. Tech rage is similar, providing insecure people ( Tech fans ) an avenue to rave with absolutely no negative consequences (e.g., getting shot). What a great invention this internet is.

How interesting. All of this bickering is what I call “Tech rage,” which is very similar to road rage. Road rage is a result of an insecure human being operating a 4000-pound machine, giving one a feeling of power and the ability to be rude and flee the consequences immediately. Tech rage is similar, providing insecure people ( Tech fans ) an avenue to rave with absolutely no negative consequences (e.g., getting shot). What a great invention this internet is.
