Tech turns tide against Oklahoma
By Don Williams l Lubbock Avalanche-Journal
When Texas Tech beat Oklahoma last Nov. 17, the night was meaningful to the Red Raiders for more than one reason.
That 34-27 victory at Jones AT&T Stadium is where it all began, as far as the school-record 12-game winning streak that the Raiders continue to ride.
It also reinforced a trend that Tech needed to establish if it planned to be a serious factor in the Big 12 South Division. Last year was Tech’s third good showing in a row against Oklahoma, a team whose defense had manhandled Mike Leach’s offense for five years.
From 2000-04, Tech lost five in a row to the Sooners while getting only 14 points a game from its offense.
“I don’t think our guys are going back and looking at the past,’’ Tech wide receivers coach Dennis Simmons, a charter member of Leach’s staff, said Tuesday. “I think our guys feel like if we go out and work hard and prepare for a game, then it’s not even really about our opponent. If we work hard and prepare, then what we do in practice will be duplicated on the field on game day.
“The first five years, I don’t think any of these (players) were even here, so they can’t even identify (with) that.’’
Indeed, Tech players’ frames of reference regarding Oklahoma mostly have to do with games won — last year and the 23-21 Tech victory in 2005 — and a game that got away — i.e., losing 34-24 two years ago in Norman after leading 24-10 late in the first half.
“I don’t want to characterize it as just being Oklahoma,’’ said Tech defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill, who also has been with Leach in Lubbock from the beginning. “The confidence level, in each (position) group, as a team and individually has grown — not just against a particular team. Oklahoma has a great program. We know we’re facing a tough challenge up there, but I like the confidence that our kids have in themselves and the group.’’
Simmons said the way the schedule fell didn’t help the Raiders in trying to compete against OU this decade. During the Leach era, six of the eight Tech-OU games have been the season’s last Big 12 Conference game for the Raiders and on another occasion it was the next-to-last game.
That tended to add importance to the games — especially for OU coach Bob Stoops’ best teams.
In many cases, Simmons said, “They were playing to clinch the Big 12 South or to keep themselves in the run for the national championship, so we happened to catch them at a time when the game had more than just winning the game on the line — much like this game. So we expect we’re going to get their best shot and more come this Saturday.’’
At least the current Raiders have reason to think they’ve leveled the playing field lately.
A couple of Tech’s team leaders said this week that the way the Raiders finished last season can’t be underestimated in their 10-0 start to this year. Tech was a 7-4 team when Oklahoma came to town last November, but the Raiders knocked OU quarterback Sam Bradford out of the game early, built a 34-10 lead and held on.
They’ve carried themselves differently ever since.
“It gives you confidence,’’ offensive tackle Rylan Reed said. “It lets you know that we were going in the right direction. I think people started believing in the things that were going on. It proved that it was working, and so I think all those things help out.’’
McNeill admitted that the Raiders weren’t always so sure of themselves when the played the best the Big 12 had to offer.
“I’d say in the early years, probably the confidence level was not there,’’ he said. “That just comes with time and having success in certain areas. Confidence is belief in your technique and then having some success with the technique, whatever it entails. Belief in it and belief in each other is the whole key to it. These guys believe in one another. They believe that, if we do our job, we can compete with anybody.’’
NOTES: Tech quarterback Graham Harrell on Tuesday was named one of 13 finalists for the Wuerffel Trophy, a national award given to the college football player that best combines community service with academic and athletic achievement.
Harrell earned a bachelor’s degree in history in 31/2 years, graduating in December 2007 and is working on a master’s in education. He is third in major-college history with 14,759 career passing yards and has 125 touchdown passes — six short of the major-college record held by Hawaii’s Colt Brennan, who was a senior last year.
The Wuerffel Trophy winner will be announced Dec. 9 and the award presented at a banquet on Feb. 20 in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., whose All Sports Association sponsors the trophy.
The other finalists are Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, Indiana kicker Austin Starr, Kansas linebacker Mike Rivera, Kentucky kicker Tim Masthay, Louisiana Tech linebacker Quin Harris, Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel, Nebraska wide receiver Todd Peterson, San Jose State center Justin Paysinger, Troy offensive lineman Will Chambliss, Air Force tight end Travis Dekker, Utah punter-kicker Louis Sakoda and Western Michigan quarterback Tim Hiller.
I find it very helpful to meditate on my productive years and let my mind take me back to happy times in life. I can go back to my childhood when needed. As an Athlete, I loved to be nervous before a game and syach myself out. I was amad man before games, and once the game started, I did not come down until the game was over. Tech is in the Zone, Jordans Bulls, Rogers Cowboys, Montana’s 49ers, This is not the time to think about titles they come when you think about the job at hand and the state of mind one has to be in is tunnel like vision. I have not talked to my son at all this week, I will send a pregame text like always, telling him to dominate, his opponent, that I love him and fear no one win or lose hae fun. This is the second time I have read that the Raiders knocked out Bradford. That makes it sound like it was some unbelievable defensive hit or effort – he hit his head trying to make a tackle on a returned fumble – quit trying to make it sound like Tech’s defense was responsible for it. The only thing getting knocked out this year is Tech’s team.
(Report comment)
Sooner666 (you’re the fool!) and Tom, get ready because OU is going down. Bradford is not even close to being as good as Harrell. As far as his getting knocked out last year, maybe he’s not tough enough for the Big12. Tech’s offense will run wild and the defense will step up once again. Tech 42 OU 21

Britton Sr. I,m looking forward to #27 scoring a couple of TD’s Saturday night. The Raider Nation is behind this team 110% !!

Tech’s defense did not injure Bradford. OU guard, Duke Robinson, landed on Bradford’s head after Bradford made a touchdown saving tackle.
(Report comment)
Harrell is a great college QB and so is Bradford – to say one is a lot better than the other is a disservice to both. However, the NFL scouts like Bradford better. You guys sound just like Missouri last year – you have a great team – but until you beat OU in Norman your talk is cheap. Same result as OU-MU – OU win.
(Report comment)
LOL, Tech is losing this one you homers. It will get ugly I promise. The crowd will be insane! Stoops played his cards just right, and is getting the crowd to a new level this week. I can’t wait to woop some Red Raider behind this week.

This game would have been even bigger if the Okies had beat Texas.
Oh well they can take their 2 losses to the Cotton bowl, they do love to show up there, gives them a chance to see civilization.
Tech has the better offense and the better defense this year.
Tech wins 45-31.

As biased as I can be, I like to think I am a rational man. Boise State? Va? I did it as a kid, and today kids do it all the time with video games and madden, with my boy it was in the back yard and on the grid iron, like all the great players, Dixion, GH, Rylan, Crab and Woods, IMO, and on and on. Give me the ball, making the killer block or that added pressure that changes the game. There will be no shrinking in the face of a challenge, it is not in ther DNA. Benny would put a foot where the sun don’t shine and I am old school, you have my permission. I guess I’m saying the raider nation and the Redraiders are coming to Norman with their GUNS FULLY LOADED “UP”. This is what we asked for and be damned if you take it while the blood is running warm, as CH says “From my dead cold hands” I think., anyway you get my point. I have to say it. I don’t know who will win this game. Vegas gives the edge to the Sooners. I do know this: should Graham Harrell go down in the first few minutes of the game and not return, OU will win by a much greater margin than 34-27.
(Report comment)
Hey Tom take my word for it, Ou’s going down. There isn’t a soul that has covered Crabtree on a consistent basis all year. I find it hard to believe that OU will be the first to do so.
As for the TTU defense well, I think Colt Mcoy’s busted lip after a 39-33 thriller says enough.
Face it, TT’S going to get after OU’S but, and there is nothing the Sooner nation can do to stop it.

Last year you didn’t win the game, it was a gift by default with Bradford out on the 1st play and even then you barely won with a woeful performance by Hazel our backup and it was in Lubbock. Come to town and bring your A game cuz your facing a large task at hand beating the Kings of the Big 12 South at home. Now let’s see what happens but good luck to you, you do have a great team and it should be a good game. Leach is a great coach and wish him continued success except against his old Sooners. If you do win, go win it all.
(Report comment)
Sooners sure like to do a lot of trash talking. They’re not quite as bad as the Ut fans, but a close 2nd. Well guess what, talk is cheap. We prefer to do our talking on the field. You sooners making predictions on here have no idea whether your team will win or not. All we have to go by at this point is Tech is undefeated and OU is not. No one is arguing the fact that OU is a good team. Tech will have to play well to win. Here’s hoping for a good, clean, injury-free game.

Honestly, home team advantage is not that important when you are the #2 team in the nation. Yes, the fans will get loud, but Harrell is poised. (See 1:08 left against Texas) Poise will far outdo fan noise. Crabtree has been phenomenal. No one can cover him. And if he does get cover, the ball will go to Britton, Lewis. EMo, you get the point. We have so many offensive weapons. Our defense through McCoy out of his game. And did I mention the slaughtering of OSU, after we were picked to LOSE? Don’t forget the running combo of Woods-Batch.
Red Raiders win a close one!
(Report comment)
OU fan. We already play in front of big stadiums every year when we have to go to Austin, College Station, or Norman. I don’t think the noise will phase Tech that much. I think OU’s offense is great just like Tech’s offense. It will be which defense can get off the field the most and which defense wears down first..

To Michael on coaches salaries, where did you find that information? Did it include packages or was it just base salaries? Those coaches are well paid.
Can’t wait for this game, it’s going to be great. I truely think the winner of this game will be the Big 12 and National Champion. I do believe we have three teams that could beat most anyone in the nation. A playoff system would reveal, in the end, that the Big 12 definitely rules this year. I love all the coaches that top the B12 South, but Leach has the edge in humor. TTech needs to pay him more.
Go Sooners, if they loose to TT Raiders, I’ll pull for Raiders to win the NC. We’ve won 6 Big 12’s and 7 National Championships. Longhorns have won a few. TTech could do it this year and we OU fans wouldn’t get all that upset, be happy for Coach Leach and the Team.

the big 12 has definately proven itself this year. any of the 3 teams in the hunt could beat bama or florida. the sooners have the edge the way i see it.( 1 ) home field, ( 2 ) revenge factor from last year. ( 3 ) 85, 000 screaming sooner maniacs. ( 4 ) murray is back to his old self so sammy doesn’t have to do it all ( though he could ) ( 5 ) big 12 and national championships still possible ( which OU has won many ). all that being said, it will be a great game and the winner will definately go all the way. if it’s tech, good for them. represent the best conference in the country well. and if not, we will win number 8. good luck to both. To all the UO oh OU fans posting…If it were not for our Texas players on your teams you all would not be noticed in NCAA Div.1 of any sport. And the fans, noise, song, or anything else does not prevent 11 players doing 11 jobs each play. 10 yards is a 1st down and each first down contributes to a touchdown. Your team could not stop us last year, and its only going to get worse this year. Reed controlled the O guy of UTuntil he got hurt and Carter, Reed and the rest of the O line will continue to distroy any D line it faces. It’s called playing with Heart and Attitude, and if your not blind you can see the Raiders have the Heart, Desire, and Professional attitude to over come any adversity they face from anybody. Reed and company are the key this year, they will not be denied the control to winning THIS ballgame as the other 10.

Good Luck in Norman, you are going to need it. Between UT, TT, OU and OSU, the team that plays at home wins. Sorry, I don’t see that changing in Norman. OU will win the game.
However, chin up Raiders, OU will go to Stillwater and get beat. So TT will still win the Big XII, and maybe have a shot at playing for the national title. This of course depends on how bad OU beats TT in Norman, and how far TT falls in the polls.
OU fans are flying to Vegas to put money on the game (OU is 7 point favorite). The OU fans are much more concerned about the trip to Stillwater, as opposed to the Raiders coming to town.

Hey, Football Fan…
Did you place any funds on the OU-TTU game? I thought so. I hope you lose your allowance, like all the longwhorns did a few weeks back. Just ask Stoopy & Leach about point spreads after the game and they’ll both tell you they don’t mean jack. If Tech wins, which I feel they will, there won’t be a separation of 7. Maybe 14-20+ If OU wins, that will be an upset in the BCS ranks. Ou is good, but not good ‘nuf… just ask UT and we beat them and OSU, regardless if it was at home. Heck, OU lost to UT in Dallas, which is considered neutral ground. Tech has history on beating OU in Norman… look it up, it won’t cost a thang!
(Report comment)
Texas Tech is a great team, but OU is greater. Tim, I believe that Texas Tech has nine Oklahoma players on their team, so I’d be slow to run down “Okies.” Like I tell the cows, “Yes it took many fine Texas young men to make Oklahoma great, but it only took one Oklahoman to make Texas great – Darrell K. Royal, from Hollis, Oklahoma. Texas even named their stadium after an Oklahoman, “Darrell K. Royal Memorial Stadium.” Isn’t that nice? Boomer Sooner!

As a Texas Tech alumni and ole Saddle Tramp, I’m concerned over the national attention that our Red Raiders are receiving. There are people in America who want to take our gun ownership rights away from us. As all Red Raiders know, we love to “get our guns up”. Could this be the death to our tradition. As finger toting, red blooded Red Raiders we must be prepared… the gun Nazis will come after us. These scoundrels will also come after the greatest mascot in the country, Raider Red. As we come up on our big game next week with OU, I recommend we stand up with our guns blazing and fight like hell to the end. If we loose our right to “get our guns up”, this could be the beginning of the end for all Americans to bear arms. I beg all Americans, members of the American Rifle Association, and all those who believe in our Constitution to stand up and get behind our Red Raiders by getting their guns up. This will prove that the Texas Tech Red Raiders are truly….America’s Team. Give ‘em Hell Big Red, Beat OU.

T. Boomer, Assaultive is actually a word, you shouldn’t be so concerned about the education we get in Lubbock, we definitely know how to spell.
(Report comment)
Oh, T. Boomer…you can only support what I’ve already said. You all would not have a championship program if it were not for Texans and would not have finished in the top 10 however many years in a row, nor won as many championships. A handfull of good men from Oklahoma does not equal years of success from Texans. Thanks again for supporting my theory. Year after year you all continue to think that one man’s name from Okie land is as equal to all the years Texans have made you all famous. OUTSTANDING!!!
Controlling the line of scrimmage on offense and defense, and bench pressing over 600lbs. has nothing to do with LUCK, nor does beating Texas, who beat the sooner out of yall.
(Report comment)
OU only lost in 2005 only because going 9 out of 10 yards on a fourth down play equals a first down in Lubbock (and I thought only horn players thought that six inches equals a foot). I have never seen a worse call until 2006 when Oregon was awarded an onside kick that it never came close to recovering. A person would have to be nearly brain dead to not recognize that two plays gave Tech and Oregon wins they did not earn. Of course, their coaches were not classy enough to admit that they received an undeserved gift. I was shocked that Mike Leach, a bit of a maverick, would not speak the truth as to the 2005 play. I always respected him more than that. In 2007, if Sam Bradford was not hurt on the first offensive play the game would have gone 49-34 or so for the Sooners. It was better to be lucky than good in years past in Lubboc. This year Tech is good, but the game is in Norman. Maybe the best team can win on the field and not with the help of officiating that belongs in pro wrestling.

I am happy that Tech has reached the stature of an A&M or UCLA. This is not an insult, but reflective of a program that generally is pretty good every year with an occasional year where it rises above 7-5 or 8-4, which is a historical year for its program.

We rank 1st in graduation compared to last for OU. With that aside, I think it will be one hell o f a game. No matter what we write, or how biased we may seem, it will all boil down to the kids on the field. I know personally that the Tech players play with alot of heart. Though we may not have all the blue chippers come to Tech like OU does, you can’t take away the heart of these kids, especially mine. What he may lack in talent he will make up hustle and heart. I think you will find that in all of the Red Raiders. Good Luck to all and pray no one gets hurt. By the way , I have a dog named Boomer, I got him after my son signed with Tech.
