Red Raider Football Notebook 11-18-2008

Oklahoma is averaging almost 85,000 per game in home attendance, but Texas Tech offensive tackle Rylan Reed said crowds such as those don’t bother him.

“I love it,” Reed said. “It reminds me of the old Thirsty Thursdays’ in minor-league baseball where you get beer thrown at you.”

Tech safety Daniel Charbonnet said it wasn’t beer he remembers being thrown his way two years ago in Norman.

“I remember last time we played there, they were pretty obnoxious right behind us,” Charbonnet said. “I had a little kid yelling at me the whole time and stuff like that. They definitely get into their football up there.”

Tech coach Mike Leach still has friends in Oklahoma from his time as an OU assistant coach, but he says they don’t take it easy on him this week.

“I wouldn’t think,” Leach said. “I haven’t really found that to be the case. Going to Owen Field is not a take-it-easy-on-somebody environment. But I do have the utmost respect for the fans and the tradition at Oklahoma.”

No letdown expected

Tech has been at its best in the last three games, beating ranked teams in each one. The Red Raiders are optimistic that they won’t experience a letdown in effort or intensity this week.

“We’ve prepared well pretty much throughout the year, I’ve felt like,” Tech coach Mike Leach said. “That’s the good thing about this group is the consistency they’ve had preparing.”

Offensive tackle Rylan Reed said he didn’t fear any dropoff in momentum.

“We’re so focused and have done such a good job of being prepared that I don’t think there’s any chance of that happening,” Reed said.

In brief

Texas Tech’s regular-season finale on Nov. 29 against Baylor will be televised by the Versus network (Suddenlink Cable channel 45). The kickoff time will be set on Saturday or Sunday, but it is expected to be at 11:30 a.m. or 2:30 p.m., according to Tech officials. … The Baylor game is officially a sellout, Tech officials said Monday.

It took the Miracle Play of the Year to beat us on the last play of the game…How is that domination?!?? It was a fluke, bottom line!

UT scored on a 91 yard pass were Tech had blown coverage and on a punt return were a block in the back penalty wasn’t enforced..

UT was LUCKY to lead the game for 1:28….

Tech had 31 first downs to UT”s 18. Sounds like domination.

Kinda sad to have to pull for OU to win since UT couldn’t do it on their own!

Longhorn “fans” will be crying and looking back at this year’s Tech win for years to come. Texas players and coaches recognize what their fans can’t: Texas Tech put together a complete game, that left them in position to WIN. A game lasts 60 minutes. Tech just used the entire game to BEAT Texas. The whipping took place from beginning to END – including the last second of the game when we took away the ball one last time.

A majority of the Texas Tech fans I know root for Texas except when Tech plays them, and were happy to see Texas win the National Championship over USC. Too bad so many UT cry-babies can’t root for Tech to win their first National Championship.

There will be no luck involved, preparation is the father of luck. This is the time you rely on your team mates to rise to the occasion. This team is seasoned, and will sieze the moment. History is on our side. There have been plenty of games were this team came out flat or gave up big leads and come from behind. For me I expect my boy to play well, and not be afraid, and he expects that from his team, and the coaches expect it as well. This team is the alter ego of Benny and I would bet on him in any Dog fihgt or Dark alley. Guns UP #27 get your Guns UP Raider Nation Our Place in History is Waiting.

Longhorn Sally has got to be about the dumbest person on earth! A miracle play? A fluke? Dumb Sally–have you seen games at Nebraska or Texas A&M over the years where TTU has scored in the last minute and pulled of the wins? THE RAIDERS are programmed to get down the field and make plays in a hurry.

Do they TEACH statistics at UT? Perhaps you should look at how TTU dominated in almost every category for the game. TTU deserved to win, and they did. UT was overrated and TTU was underrated (as usual); however, TTU has now beaten or stomped several top twenty teams so be a grown-up and accept the well-deserved loss. WRECK’EM TECH.

As far as getting waxed in Norman, well maybe, but every one said that before we played Kansas, UT, and OSU. I am sure if you keep betting against a team you will eventually be right.

I get a kick when someone thinks Tech won any game with 1:29 on the clock. Rarely do they need that much time to score. The domination is in the numbers…total offense, scores per game, passing percentages, average per play and the defense has stepped up huge. OU will be our biggest test but I know these guys can pull it off. Very special group of men and it’s their time to shine.

Billy and Sally–what classy and mature individuals. One simply ignores statistics and facts to invent her claism that Tech won on a fluke despite the numerous (shall I refer to HISTORY since so many UT fans rely on it for solace) while the other one must criticize the city. I am Lubbock born and bred from five generations of Texans. I CHOSE Texas Tech over Ivy league schools, so TTU was not my alma mater by default. Second, my education allowed me to obtain a PH.D. from another tier one school. Third, I have lived in Paris, New York and other “real cities” with cultural—I’ve always been happy to return back to Lubbock where the people are sincere, kind, and without pretense. In the city of MY birth, people still say thank you, “sir,” and if you have a flat tire someone stops to help you. I have never been ashamed of being from Lubbock, Texas, and I never will! I love Texas Tech and the great state of Texas, and we don’t degrade our other wonderful universities to attempt to make us feel better. We KNOW what we have in Lubbock and at Tech. GUNS UP RAIDERS!

Jack, Tech would like nothing better than a rematch against Alabama for that Cotton bowl a few years ago, our team just has to make it there. But you should root for Tech. Were you embarassed when TTU beat Virginia in the Gator Bowl last year? I wasn’t. I was there and I felt they rep’d the Big XII quite nicely. My point is… the past is the past… Win or Lose, that is the by-product of sport. Your longwhorns had their chance against TTU, so why not wish your fellow TECHsans a win over OU?
You can still go to the Cotton, just pretend your playing OU and you won’t be embarassed by doing so.
