Kipyego, Tech women win Mountain Regional cross country championship

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Texas Tech won its first women’s NCAA Mountain Regional cross country championship Saturday, riding Sally Kipyego’s third consecutive regional title and three other top-10 finishes.

Next up for No. 9 Tech is the NCAA championships on Nov. 24 in Terre Haute, Ind., where Kipyego will be going for her third straight national championship in cross country.

Kipyego covered the 6-kilometer course Saturday in 19 minutes, 31.9 seconds to win by 40 seconds. Teammate Lillian Badaru (20:12.3) finished second, and Tech had Asia Diaz (20:49.8) take sixth and Gladys Kipsang (20:50.7) in eighth. Chep Boit (21:22.0) finished 25th.

Tech tallied 42 points, beating second-place New Mexico by 28 points.

The Tech men finished 13th, led individually by Gilbert Limo, whose 10K time of 31:03.3 was good for 42nd.

Basketball

• Wayland Baptist men

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Johnny Terra scored 21 points as Wayland Baptist improved to 6-0, beating Central Bible (Mo.) 85-60 on day two of the Oklahoma Baptist Classic.

The Pioneers got 17 points from Jon Hurt, 16 from Rene Farias, 13 from Teddy Chambers and 11 from Bobby Watkins.

• Wayland Baptist women

PLAINVIEW – Rose Ouma recorded a triple double – 17 points, 18 rebounds and 10 steals – and Wayland Baptist needed it all to get past Texas A&M-Kingsville 58-56 at Hutcherson Center.

Staci Murphree and Alex Williams added 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Flying Queens (3-0).

• South Plains men

LEVELLAND – South Plains College guard Hugh Mingo, who signed last week with Louisiana-Monroe, scored 17 points and California signee Markhuri Sanders-Frison added 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Texans downed Coastal Bend 63-45 on the final day of the Texan Classic.

David Tairu scored nine points for the Texans (5-0).

• South Plains women

ODESSA – Freshman center Taniqua Ards from Estacado scored 19 points for the second game in a row, leading 12th-ranked South Plains to an 88-37 rout of Eastern Arizona on the final day of the Odessa College tournament.

Ards also had four blocked shots.

Sajoyia Griffin scored 13 points, Briana Goss had 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Dayon Hall-Jones scored 10.

Chasity Workman and McKinsie East added nine points each.

Volleyball

• LCU def. Wayland

OKLAHOMA CITY – Kelsey Odell and Suzanne Childress registered 14 kills apiece and No. 25 Lubbock Christian University beat Wayland Baptist to earn a spot in the NAIA national championships. The Lady Chaparrals won 24-26, 25-19, 25-17, 25-20.

The match was a national tournament play-in between LCU (32-4), the Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season champion, and Wayland (26-8), which beat LCU on Thursday in the SAC postseason tournament. The Pioneers will hope for an at-large bid to the national tournament.

The qualifiers and opening-round pairings will be released tonight.

LCU got 49 assists from Rachel Stuyvesant and 34 digs from Courtney Yonke.

Wayland’s Anika Voigt, the SAC tournament most valuable player, led her team with 33 assists and 26 digs, and freshman Kimberli Harger from Cooper recorded a team-high 13 kills as well as 15 digs.
