Lineman changes commitment from K-State to Tech

BY DON WILLIAMS

AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

Michael Bowie, a 6-foot-5, 305-pound offensive line prospect from Charles Page High School in Sand Springs, Okla., confirmed to The Avalanche-Journal on Wednesday that he has made an oral commitment to the Texas Tech football team.

Oral commitments are non-binding. Bowie had pledged Kansas State in June but reconsidered when it was announced last week that Ron Prince won’t be back as the Wildcats’ coach next season.

Bowie asked a reporter to call him back later because he was busy when first reached by telephone, but said he had switched his pledge to the Red Raiders.

Bowie was on the Tech campus for an official visit last weekend. Among the other schools that recruited him were Iowa State, Oregon State and Tulsa.

Bowie has played on both sides of the ball for his high school team at offensive tackle and defensive end.

My wife saw Michael on the airplane the other day flying from Dallas to Tulsa. She said he is gigantic. Evidently a man was sitting next to him and the man convinced him to switch his comittment to Tech from K-State. The man told the kid he was on the Tech board of Trustees many years ago and I think he did a great job selling Tech to the young man. I love it. Tech is starting to get some of the type of athletes it takes to compete at a high level year after year. Great job Tech getting Michael.

Wonder why OU didn’t recruit him?

Because OU basically recruits most of their kids in Texas. That is why I laugh at Oklahoma fans whenever OU beats a Texas team. In the end its just one group of Texans beating another group of Texans.

lol Joe, i completely agree with you there, OU gets most of it’s good football recruits from Texas. Just a bunch of sellouts go to OU. Heck, i was admitted to OU with a scholarship, but i chose Tech.

But, back on topic, our recruiting class is finally looking pretty good this year. It’s funny how in years past Tech has had one of the smallest recruiting classes in the nation, yet we always do so well. I’m glad that we’re finally getting some attention, and some great recruits, not that our previous recruits suck, its just nice to have this kind of depth that Tech has never really had before.

As a Texas Tech alumni and ole Saddle Tramp, I’m concerned over the national attention that our Red Raiders are receiving. There are people in America who want to take our gun ownership rights away from us. As all Red Raiders know, we love to “get our guns up”. Could this be the death to our tradition. As finger toting, red blooded Red Raiders we must be prepared… the gun Nazis will come after us. These scoundrels will also come after the greatest mascot in the country, Raider Red. As we come up on our big game this with OU, I recommend we stand up with our guns blazing and fight like hell to the end. If we loose our right to “get our guns up”, this could be the beginning of the end for all Americans to bear arms. I beg all Americans, members of the American Rifle Association, and all those who believe in our Constitution to stand up and get behind our Red Raiders by getting their guns up. This will prove that the Texas Tech Red Raiders are truly….America’s Team.
