Success brings Leach closer to Tech victory record

BY DON WILLIAMS

AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

Mike Leach often seems acutely aware of and proud to trumpet his players’ and team’s statistical achievements. In a matter of months, he could have something to brag about on himself.

Texas Tech’s 10-0 start and 12-game winning streak has Leach on a rapid ascent toward the school record for coaching victories. His career mark of 75-37 leaves him seven from tying and eight from breaking Spike Dykes’ record 82 victories. Leach’s next win will tie him for second with another Tech coaching icon, Pete Cawthon, a friend of Notre Dame immortal Knute Rockne, who went 76-32-6 from 1930-40.

“I guess that’s good,’’ Leach said after Tuesday’s practice. “I figured we’d get it next year, which is pretty quick, so I’m proud of this team and our coaches. That’d be quicker than anybody else has gotten it, so that’s good.’’

Leach’s chance to become Tech’s all-time winningest coach comes at a time when some speculate that he won’t stick around to get the record.

In what’s become a near-annual event, Leach is being mentioned in media reports as a potential candidate for jobs elsewhere. Most prominent at the moment are Tennessee, where Phillip Fulmer is out after this season, and Washington, where Tyrone Willingham also is a lame duck.

Asked the likelihood of getting the record next season is an incentive to stay at Tech, Leach said, “I don’t know. I’ve always figured I was going to be here, you know?’’

Fueling speculation of Leach possibly leaving after this season are Tech’s rise to No. 2 in the national rankings, seemingly making him a hotter commodity, and Leach’s contract status. He has two years remaining on a deal that guarantees him $10 million over five years.

Tech athletic director Gerald Myers has said since the summer that a new, five-year contract for Leach will get done after the season. In July, Myers said, “We want him to be our coach. We want to be able to compensate him at the level the market dictates.’’

Myers declined on Monday to comment on the subject.

More than a few Tech fans are accustomed to fretting over whether Leach will leave. When he is mentioned as a possible target elsewhere, Leach typically does little to calm the fears, never acknowledging or disavowing interest in other schools.

“We go through this every year,’’ he said Tuesday. “It’s a yearly ritual, and it’s a yearly waste of time. I don’t worry about any of it, and I don’t think of responses to tell them. I just think about the next game and the next practice.’’

Dykes, who took over before the Independence Bowl in 1986, went 82-67-1 before retiring after the 1999 season.

He was in Lubbock two weekends ago to see the Red Raiders’ 39-33 victory over then-No. 1 Texas. The night being as frenetic as it was, Leach said he didn’t get to see the man whose record he’s approaching.

“I’ve always been excited about him as a coach,’’ Leach said. “I think he was instrumental in me coming here, and he built a great program. He’s a guy that supported me early on when I got here. I was looking at it as an opportunity, and I’ve always appreciated his support and the example he set as a coach.’’

Oh, Robert! I’m never gonna be a Longhorn fan, but it has been wonderful to see the success of Coach Leach and his teams, and I hope that Tech does what is necessary to keep him right here in Lubbock, TX. The whole city is benefitting from the national TV coverage. It sounds like recruiting is benefitting as well, and I am looking forward to more great years of RR football, hopefully with Coach Leach at the helm.

How long have you allegedly been a Red Raider fan, Robert? Two weeks? Four months? A year? Some of us have been backing the Raiders for decades and bleed scarlet and black! I will be a fan as long as I live, even if Leach leaves. I will never be a fan of the Longhorns. No self-respecting Raider fan would. I certainly hope Leach makes this his permanent home and retires as the Raiders’ all-time winningest coach, a la Bear Bryant or Darrell Royal. That being said, MAKE LEACH THE HIGHEST PAID COACH IN THE BIG 12!!!

I would love for Leach to stay, but I wonder how many of you are putting your money behind the program to make sure he does. Join the RRC, the Alumni Association, or donate to teh stadium expansion and start showing that our commitment to this program and coach is financial as well as emotional. Put something on the table besides words to keep Leach here.

Leach should be paid for what he’s done to help Tech get this far. And, hopefully, he will return the favor by staying at Tech. He’s only just begun at Tech. In my opinion, a coach should be as loyal to an institution as he expects the players and fans to be. Many, many times we’ve seen coaches leave once they taste success. It’s a 2 way street. I think Tech has, and will, pay Leach for his success, but I think it would also be a nice gesture to make a real program out of it with the man who started it all. Go Tech.

I am a graduate of Tech. My four children all have bachelor degrees from Tech. We also hold 2 law degrees and two masters degrees from Tech. I lived for many years in Luubock beginning in the J.T. King era. We do bleed red and black and are thrilled beyond words with our success this year . I really can’t imagine where our football program would be now or in the future without Mike Leach. I heard on the radio this morning that some NFL teams are beginning to look at him as a head- coaching possibility. We need to craft a new contract that will keep him coaching in Lubbock for the rest of his career. By the way, I always want other Big 12 schools to be successful as it improroves our rankings when we beat them. Go Tech!

I graduated from Texas Tech in 1967 and currently live in Florida.
I have always been a true Red Raider rooter, and like Karl, would
never be a Longhorn fan. I hate Texas University. They cast the
only negaitve vote year after year that prevented Texas Tech from
joining the Southwest Conference. That is why it took so long for Tech to be accepted. It had to be a unanimous vote and all the
other members (Rice, Arkansas, Baylor, SMU, TCU, and Texas
A & M) always voted favorably for Tech at the annual Meeting.

As far as Coach Leach, I would be willing to send a small donation
toward some type of bonus it that is legal and feasible. Perhaps if a lot of alumni would contribute a little, we could help keep him.

I certainly hope we can. In addition, would be it worthwhile for all
those that want him send an email or otherwise let him know some way or the other.

    Herman Ray Webber,

How quickly you forget, if it wasn’t for Texas, Texas Tech wouldn’t even be in the Big 12. Back in the 90′s Texas could of left for the Pac 10 or the SEC. Tech would be part of the WAC or some other lame conference if it hadn’t been for Texas and A & M.

    Go Raiders

Hey Lisa… do you mean this part?

“Both the SEC and the Pac-10 wanted the University of Texas, but Dodds had other ideas. He and his close friend Donnie Duncan, the athletics director at the University of Oklahoma, soon emerged as driving forces behind the formation of the Big 12 Conference, which combined UT, Texas A&M, Baylor, and Texas Tech with the teams from the Big 8.”???

Dodds was undoubtedly instramental in the formation of the BIG 12, and that ut really knows how to raise money. However, the reality is that the State Legislature told ut that if they left for another conference that they would cease their funding. That meant that the big oil revenues that they had been receiving for years would cease.

Isn’t awesome that a school with less funds like Tech beat the horns this year?

Fortunately, with Leach and the dream team we have now I can see Tech win and UT lose, HAHA!

Good luck in OK guys. Keep Leach if you can. He is great. Doesnt get wrapped up in interviews and infamous to the press, but beloved by players, fans, and even other coaches(Stoops).

Check out this quote from OU Coach Stoops,
“Look at all the skill players that are out there and you’ve got a that is just great delivering the ball and understanding,” Stoops said. “His quarterbacks have all been that way. They have a great understanding of where people are and they go through their reads fairly quick to get the ball to the open guy.”

It’s the system. You don’t see any of his past quarterbacks in the NFL. Harrell is having a great year but hye won’t be a first or second rounder next year. Third or fourth rounder, maybe even later in the draft.

Crabtree 1st rounder for sure, and yes Tech fans he is leaving for the NFL. He has stated too many of his closest friends and family that this is his final year at Tech.

    Scout

I am confused. If it was the “system” what makes you so sure Crabtree is not a part of it? You throw the ball, you catch the ball. You hand the ball off, you run. Some atheletes do it better than others. Look at all the years when Oklahoma and Nebraska ran the football. Not all of their running backs went to the NFL, but put up big rushing numbers. Billy Simms won a Heisman trophy during one of those years. How many times did Oklahoma pass the ball that year? “System”, I do not think so.

James your an idiot and shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near a computer.

What makes Crabtree so special is that he is not just a product of the system. He will use his 6-3, 214 pound frame and be a physical receiver when he needs to do so, but he also has the speed to blow right past the defenders. There are not many receivers who have his size and speed, and that is not just counting the college ranks. Crabtree even has great hands and rarely drops a pass.

After speaking with many NFL scouts, Harrell is best a 5th rounder in next years draft.

Now NFL scouts have been drooling over Matthew Stafford for years.

Stafford is so blessed with talent that scouts are probably not too concerned with numbers. He is a standout athlete with arm strength that is rarely seen in the ranks of college football. Stafford can throw deep balls on a dime that most other quarterbacks would be embarrassed to even attempt. Perhaps the one knock of Stafford is his scrambling ability, but that should improve considering he possesses deceptive open-field speed. His pedestrian 40 time in the 40s does not jump off the page, yet he is unafraid–and quite capable–of tucking the ball away and running effectively with it.

  • James

Dude Harrell will be higher than the 5th round. I have seen him play since his high school days and the dude can the throw the deep ball a lot better than people give him credit for.

    Hey Scout

I agree it is Leach’s coaching that makes Harrell as effective.
Even more so, the Offensive line.
Harrell is definitely a great QB too, but I would not disagree with you about 1st 2nd or 3rd rounds, QBs need exp for the change to pro
I hope you are wrong about Crabtree though. He is sophomore, right? These days it doesn’t mean much, but he should wait another year. However, I realize he has close ties to NFL alumni already. He is a talent.
