Tech reaches apparel deal

Texas Tech on Monday announced a five-year, $11 million contract with Under Armour to outfit all its athletic teams with shoes, uniforms and other apparel beginning in July 2009.

Baltimore-based Under Armour has been the supplier for Tech’s football team for the last three years.

“We’ve been splintered all over the place all these years with apparel,” Tech athletic director Gerald Myers said. “Each coach had his own agreement and own situation and company. But now I know all of our athletes and coaches are really excited that we’re going to all be under the same brand.

“It’s unbelievable, the quality of service and support that Under Armour has given our football program over these past three years. Our players, they love Under Armour apparel and shoes and equipment. Now we’re going to be able to include all of our teams under the Under Armour brand.”

Under Armour outfits all the sports teams at Maryland, South Carolina, South Florida, Auburn, Utah, Hawaii and Boston College, according to Walker Jones, Under Armour director of sports marketing. He said the company also has contracts with about 265 other college teams whose schools aren’t fully affiliated with Under Armour.

Jones said the company carefully chooses programs with which it wants to deal and has turned down some universities so that it can better respond to the needs of a select few.

“We reserve these types of partnerships for the most elite universities, that have a great team of people and a great vision for the future,” Jones said. “There’s no doubt that Texas Tech fits that criteria going forward.”

Tech coach Mike Leach said he’s been happy with the company during the last three years.

“I can say firsthand that the service is unparalleled,” Leach said, “because I’ve dealt at some point in time with every shoe manufacturer that there is. I haven’t had a problem with any of them really. But I’d never been really, really excited about any of them, and Under Armour’s the only one that I’m truly excited about. They’re my kind of people. They’re aggressive as far as trying to reach for the top and trying to achieve in high fashion.”

Tech-Oklahoma game set for TV

Texas Tech’s Nov. 22 game at Oklahoma has been scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be carried by ABC Sports (channel 28; Suddenlink Cable channel 8). The television crew will be the same as it’s been for the last two Tech games: Brent Musburger on play-by-play, Kirk Herbstreit as analyst and Lisa Salters as sideline reporter.

Tech officials said Musburger’s visits to Lubbock to call the Tech-Texas and Tech-Oklahoma State games were the veteran announcer’s first time to do football games in the same location on back-to-back weekends.

In brief

Tech announced Monday that about 1,000 tickets remain for the team’s regular-season finale on Nov. 29 against Baylor.

    To all concerned:
I am so tired of hearing Lubbock (lub uck) pronounced
lub eek or lub ick I don”t know what to do. Visiting radio
and TV crews need to be corrected on the pronounciation.
I realize we went many years with no PR exposure, but
now we’ve arrived—–why do not Texas Tech people take
it upon themselves to correct this error. It’s glaring. And
    it’s pointless. Help.

Because I think it is the responsibilty of the City of Lobbock to change their image and send out Public Relations kits to media even if it must include a pronunciation guide. I think Tech has done it’s part to bring publicity to Lubbock. I think it is now time for the city to step up and help change the cities national perception.

Who says lub-eek? Seriously, I’ve heard Lub-Ick or even Lub-Ock but I have never heard Lub-Eek, that’s just weird. Anyone saying that should just be ignored for an obvious reading deficiency.

Pirates love wearing organge! If we can get Coach Leech to come, we will build him a pirate ship right outside the stadium on Ft. Loudon Lake/Tennessee river commanding hundreds of the rest of the Vol Navy on game day! He can have his own guns too.shipmates, winches, everything! Now what real pirate would turn down his own ship and the ability to ravage 107,000 people?

All us long, long suffering TTU fans have been loyal. We’ve been shirked by the big money going to UT and A&M in Texas, sneered at by OU. But loyal always. We’ve clung to the NFL success of Zach Thomas, and Monte Reagor, hoped Bam and Billie Joe could’ve elevated TTU a bit more, wished Kliff would’ve gotten a better shake in the pros, lately we’ve seen that West Texas steely eyed glint in the eye of never-say-die Wes Welker. . . .there ain’t no quit in there.

And I LOVE the irreverence of Mike Leach. The quirky Cadillac Ranch Stanley Marsh style coach who gives a royal rat’s rip what anyone thinks. Who tells it like it is, because well. . . .it IS.

Come ‘on alums, and come on Gerald Meyers. Drop the conservative wheeler dealer baron on a buck attitude and GET LEACH A GREAT CONTRACT!!!!! YESTERDAY! Before his agent gets in his ear and helps him decide trees and hills and rivers and bigger dollars are the ticket at some other program. Quit being so dang CHEAP!

Leach can be a legacy coach out in West Texas. . .but dang it, he ain’t from here and he may not appreciate Brownwood and Friday Night Lights like the natives. . .never mind the stockyards. . .

He’s done a FABULOUS job at Tech. Reward the guy handsomely for crying out loud, or he’ll be gone on the West Texas wind – and you’ll wonder why the South Plains sing the melancholy tune of mediocrity once again.

    JUST DO YOUR JOB GERALD!

Myers, not Meyers. Their, not there. Leach not Leech. And so on ………. and so on ……….
Continuing to move up in the national spotlight. I seriously doubt Cap’n Leach is going anywhere except into his Texas Tech office for the next 20 years. He has not only put his name onto everyone’s lips, but Tech’s name as well. He will become a legend while at Tech, on a par with Broyles, Royal, Rockne, et. al.
Hi name will become synonimous with Texas Tech. Don’t worry. Coach Myers will continue the Leach era at Tech for at least five more years, when Myers will finally step down. The next AD will follow suite, no problem. Keep the faith, just like you do with this year’s team.

That 11 is divided by 5 years not much per year towards his “raise”. He’ll all ready be at 2 million (i.e. money is all ready spent). Want to raise money build sections over the four corner gates at Jones! BTW how much does one person need? What doe Joe make at Penn State? He’s stayed there and to me is the role model coach! Wreck’Em Tech!

mike leach needs to be paid fair market value, and i think he would be happy, but the thing is he has been under paid for awhile and probably needs some extra to make up for those past years.

even in these uncertain economical times, ncaa and nfl coaches get paid a premium..TECH needs to pony up the cash….

I agree, JoePa has been at PennSt for forever, and i’m pretty sure he’s not getting paid as much as Mack Brown or Bob Stoops, Mike Leach is a good coach, but there is no need to pay him more than maybe 2 million a year. We should give him incentives though, for making bowl games, bcs bowls, and even more if he makes the natl championship.

I agree with wathdog though, tech can extend the stadium 1 section to the south, and 2 towards the north end of the stadium, whithout having to really tear anything else down. After completing the east side, why not expand the stadium just a little bit more, it could cost too much, and it would add at least 2-4 thousand seats.

One thing everyone is forgetting is that Leach wants really good pay for the assistant coaches as well. The asst. coaches here are paid very well compared to other asst. coaches. Its not just Leach’s contract that will be reviewed its also how well gerald steps up to the plate for the asst. coaches.. Leach and Lubbock are an awesome fit– where else does a coach go roller blading down the middle of the street?? I believe (HOPE) he will stay put especially with the support the community has given him. Plus its a great place to raise a family…..He could go to tennesse and make moonshine and sell to the alumni.. that might get him another yr or 2 if he doest win big in his first 2 yrs. tennessee wants a fast fix and it aint gonna happen….There isnt alot of pressure here as tech has never been a power house. we have all gotten continted with going to a bowl–any bowl.. Leach has raised the bar.. thats the excitement…….
