Tech one round away from getting title shot

By Don Williams l Lubbock Avalanche Journal

Expanded Game Day Coverage

A scratch golfer buddy of mine recently asked me what’s the toughest thing to do in golf? He answered his own question by saying, “To follow up a good round.”

So in a column about football, I’ll borrow a golf analogy here and say Texas Tech has just shot three straight rounds in the 60s. One more and the Red Raiders will have, well, their first major title. Never mind what the rankings say: Two weeks from now in Norman, it’s the Rocco Raiders squaring off with a veritable Tiger in Oklahoma, a program that’s won no Big 12 titles against a machine that’s won five this decade.

The Red Raiders proved their No. 2 BCS ranking is legitimate after trouncing Oklahoma State 56-20 on Saturday night at Jones AT&T Stadium. Tech’s Michael Crabtree (5) celebrates with Eric Morris (12) and Tramain Swindall (11) after scoring one of Tech’s six touchdowns on consecutive possessions.

I wouldn’t expect the Raiders to come through on the road in that one, but hey. I’m blown away by 10-0, and how easy the Raiders made it look the last three weeks in getting there. In expecting a 10-2 season, clearly, I and a lot of other people underestimated this team.

Maybe if I had just overheard that conversation between Graham Harrell and Eric Morris on Tech’s team flight back from the Gator Bowl last January.
“He told me, ‘We’ve got a chance to be really special next year, ‘ and I said, ‘Yeah, we do, ‘ ” Harrell said after his 456-yard, six-TD night. “Being 10-0′s great, but we have two regular-season games ahead of us. We want to go 12-0. That’s our goal.”

In trying to achieve that, the Raiders are peaking at the right time.

After bludgeoning Kansas two weeks ago, then upsetting No. 1 Texas, Tech was vulnerable like a guy who’d just broken up with his girl: The Red Raiders had expended a ton of emotion, but they needed to maintain that same fine edge on Saturday. Does anyone doubt that they did after a 56-20 rout of Oklahoma State? Letdowns? Maybe for another full house of fans that showed up thinking they’d need to cheer hard to the very end. Not much need for that after the Raiders built up three-touchdown leads twice in the third quarter.

The marquee matchup of the national co-leaders in touchdown catches turned out to be a dud. Mike Crabtree, who had five three-touchdown games in his first six career games, had had just one this season. It was Oklahoma State’s Dez Bryant who had had all the monster games.

Going head to head, though, Crabtree asserted himself in the red zone with three touchdown catches. Bryant made one big play, didn’t score, and his night was encapsulated by one play late in the first half. Having gotten open on a deep route, Bryant let Zac Robinson’s pass go off his hands, even before Tech safety Anthony Hines came angling across to break it up.

Bottling up Bryant was the most obvious thing the Tech defense pulled off, but not the only thing for a group that’s been all about dishing out lows lately. They held Kansas to a 20-game low in total offense, Texas to a 16-game low in rushing. Oklahoma State scored a season low. Until their final, meaningless series, one that started with fewer than three minutes left, the Cowboys were sitting on a 22-game low in rushing.

This from a team that, for five years, had shredded Tech with one long-range touchdown after another in the run game.

“I think we’ve grown big time. Really big time how we’ve grown, ” said middle linebacker Brian Duncan, who had a team high 11 tackles. “I think we’ve come a long way. Our chemistry as a team has come a long way. I’m really excited and looking forward to the future.”

Add it all up and the Raiders are 10-0 now with time off to get ready for the next “biggest game in school history.” That bye week does everyone good. The Raiders can catch their breath and have more days to gear up for the Sooners.

With all due respect to a group of mostly 18- to 22-year-olds, they might not fully grasp what just a 10-win season means to a community and long-suffering Tech fans. With the stakes growing by the week, the buildup to the Tech-OU will equal or surpass that for Tech-UT. That means we’re in for two more weeks of buzz about town and national media that can’t afford to turn an eye away from Lubbock.

For long-suffering Tech fans and the city, it’s been a long time coming.

Guess people who have never lived here and are as ignorant about our fair city as they are about the “true talent” the Red Raiders possess will always feel the urge to bash our city if they can’t find anything bad to say about the team. Yeah, guess I was a little ticked at his careless attempt at poor humor.

Actually, the Raiders are two rounds away and I think Coach Leach will convey that based on the showing last night. After moving from Lubbock a couple of years ago and having lived and worked there for nearly 40 years, I can tell you , this football team has helped put Lubbock on the map. Unfortunately, (or vice versa) it takes these type events to showcase a great town, a great university, and more importantly, great people. I am humbled to have been a part of Lubbock for 5 decades. There is a large part of me and my essence that carries the llano estacado. No longer can it be said: “Texas Tech; where men are men and women are national champions!” This is true now no matter the results of the last two “rounds.” (Well, sorta.) ;<)

I’d dearly love to move back home to Lubbock. Not just because I wish I was there to feel part of the excitement (although I do wish that), but because Lubbock is a such a wonderful place in itself. Other than the climate, Lubbock is perfect: lots of shopping, lots of things to do, and lots and lots of great restaurants. The people are friendly and, yes, they ARE polite. If I had been at that victory over Texas, I’d have probably lost my head and run down on that field with the students. And, although it’s possible to get hung up in traffic, Lubbock does not have the hour long or more pileups that are in the bigger cities like here in Houston; you can get almost anywhere you want to go in Lubbock without committing half your day to it. If you’re not happy with the public schools, there are plenty of private options and an enormous homeschool support group for those who choose that route. Sure, spring is horrible up there, but when the dust isn’t blowing the blue skies in West Texas are like paradise. Oh gosh I miss that. We visit our families there a couple of times a year and are really impressed by the planning of whomever is in charge up there: the “red bricks” on the new freeways and the old loop, the pretty, pretty building going around Tech itself, and the unbroken skyline. My husband knows that, even if we never get to move back, that if he outlives me he is to take me back to Lubbock and bury me there, because that will always be my home.

Austin is a great city but only if you are able to stay away from the students! And while I am on a UT rant, the adult fans are just as bad as anyone I have ever seen in Red Raider land. Go to Austin anytime of the year and wear a TECH shirt….. constant comments and snide remarks. They are poor losers to say the least. Mac Brown is very well spoken and he does his best to express the “class” of UT to the sports nation. Unfortunately, the fans don’t have the ability to follow his lead.

The Raiders are playing lights out! They have every chance to beat OU in two weeks. Their defense has come a long ways and shows their experience every week. I think Bradford is worried about getting his bell rung again in two weeks. If the defense can pressure him like they did last year, it is a done deal.

I don’t think there is anything else that can be said for the offense. I personally would love to see a rematch between TECH and Alabama. That game in the Cotton Bowl was terrible!! Graham will have a great opportunity to redeem himself in Miami.

Sure, the OU game is huge. Still, Alabama is not shining like they are ranked. National titles, Big 12 Championships, Bowl games are still weeks away and November has been a ride in the NCAA/BCS.

Ground game, Tech? Yes, Leach could make some small adjustments to his playbook to use that impressive O-Line to make gaps for Woods and Batch to build a running game to carry into next year. This O-Line is arguably the best in football. I wouldn’t recommend anyone that isn’t a Tech fan to taunt Harrell while those guys are around.

Defense: These guys really are unsung heroes. The offense is virtually flawless, with less than 8 mistakes the entire game (two fumbles and a bad pass included), but the defense is showing their talent too. The passed two weeks have proven “killer D status” with interceptions by McBath and Charbonnet and the pressure in the backfield by Whitlock.

Living in Houston I am always around Longhorns and I hear over and over again about how “classless” Red Raider fans are. Usually this is followed by a speech about how Tech fans are just excited because they are finally having a good year, whereas UT fans enjoy a good year every year. The implied rational is that UT fans are better equiped to handle success because they are so used to it. I have also heard many of these same Longhorns voice the belief that everyone who went to Tech only did so because they couldn’t get into UT or A&M anyway.
What is so funny to me is that these Longhorns and people like Texas Born fail to see the irony in that calling Tech fans classless and trying to take away from or diminish Tech’s accomplishments this year actually makes themselves look classless.
Texas is, has been, and will continue to be a great football program. Everyone knows that. But give Texas Tech the credit they are due.

I wish I could be out in Lubbock celebrating, and if I could, I would be there every weekend. I miss throwing the tortillas and tearing down goal posts.

As for the haters, you are sore losers and you need to simply accept the facts and know that change is arrived.
The Red Raiders are a POWER HOUSE. Even ESPN is liking every bit about them. They have Harrell as the leading candidate for the Heisman and Texas Tech as the best team in the nation. (this week)… They were not that impressed with Alabama’s near loss.

Tech is undefeated and as long as they go into Norman and do the same thing they have been doing all year long, offensively and defensively, they will be the number one team in the nation, period.

Good Luck in Norman. It will not be easy, but Tech has staff, players and talent to get the job done.

Your obviously a longhorn t-shirt fan.

    Wreck em Tech.

    Texas Born,

Not a problem. The fact is that many people outside our state think all Texans are a bunch of redneck hicks. So anytime I see someone identifying themselves as a Texan, posting on a website where they make themselves look uneducated, I just want to help out. However, your “thougts” (sic) would be taken more seriously if you spent the extra 15 seconds and proof read. Good luck to you.

    Joe,

I think you’re being a bit tough on Junior High kids. I’m sure they would sound more intelligent than Texas Born. I mean, talk about sounding like a redneck.

Let’s ignore this guy and get back to the article. The fact of the matter is Tech is 10-0 and the Horns need some help from other teams if they are going to reach the XII Championship game. The bottom line is that regardless of your affiliation, the Big XII is the best conference in football. If you go back two weeks, Tech had to dominate UT for 2 1/2 quarters and had to score at the end of the game to win. Yes, I believe the better team on that night won. If they were to play again, I’d like to thing we’d win again, but….

I wasn’t criticizing your bro’ for not having a life. Although you do bring up a good point. I thought it was funny that he hated Lubbock and West Texas so much yet spent his time on this site. I would have expected him spend his time on the Austin Statesman website.

I live in Austin and went to Texas Tech back in the late 90′s. It’s amazing how things turn when we finally beat Texas. Every year I wore my red and black hoping Tech could beat Texas and when they lost…I congratulated the other team (Texas) and hoped they did well. Well we beat Texas and I am not getting the love that I was giving…straight hate. Your going to lose to OSU…your going to lose to OU. I am sorry but UT fans turned out to be sore losers. Sure I had some that came and congratulated Tech, but for the most part it was a bunch of sore losers. Now I know we have to beat OU to gain more respect and I think we will win. I have two more things to say (ask).

    1) Texas Born…did you even go to college and if you did was it at UT in Austin….don’t you dare say UT permian or one of the other UT affiliated schools?

    2) They bring up a good point…why are you on the Lubbock AJ site? keep your one sided views in the Austin American Statesman newspapers. The town of Lubbock is filled with classy people and your kind need to kept out.

    Guns Up!

    To Tx Born & snobs,
You sound like someone who never actually EARNED it. There’s more to class than the the price tag. It’s how you do it, and the taste and dignity. The first time I met a governor, I admitted that I was intimidated by meeting him, and he replied “Don’t be, I’m just another person with a different job. I put my pants on the same way you do.” That’s class.

Henry Ford’s favorite meal was said to be a hamburger (in a $125/plate exec dining rm). HL Hunt (one 10 richest in world at time) was said to brownbag his lunch to work.

At church this morning, someone said their daughter who lives in Austin had to remove the Tech emblems because UT people were breaking the windows & other damage. Do you call that class??? I saw 2 or 3 people today in stores wearing UT shirts, I talked with one, and saw no one being obnoxious to them.

If UT/AM didn’t have their billion-dollar land grants, might be different. I am convinced our forefathers meant to further ALL higher education in Texas, not just two schools. The land grants should be broken up, and distributed to all Texas colleges/univ.

    Go Raiders.!!!

I have to say that the people on this blog suddenly making rash comments about towns her and there are losing sight of the point of this page.
We are here to talk about FOOTBALL.
Stop insulting Floridians, Houstonians, Austinites, and people in Lubbock. I have seen my share of dumbases in all those places.
Yet there is more to discuss about TECH!!!!!

I cannot wait for the TTU/OU game. It will be the Big12 showdown of the year. UT and OU had a great game, UT won. Tech beat the longhorns in dramatic fashion and went on to prove themselves against OK St, so one contest remains.
My main concern is the issue of our #2 status….why is Alabama #1?
LSU had a inexperienced QB and they almost won. It was an ugly game. Bama was lucky that Rashad Johnson was there to catch his three tipped balls. That is not a proactive strategy…..
If Tech played Bama, the country would be silenced by Raider buzz. Tech beat Ok St with style and class, and should have ranked up to #1. The coaches polls didn’t make since and kept Bama up on us and now we have a bye week. At least the computers like the Big 12.
Next, I would like to say that I wanna see us play Florida. Gators and Raiders share talent on offense. The defense of FLA is hyped from that game vs Georgia, but GA has suffered frequent turnovers against all their opponents this yr.
If we have to play USC, I will not be satisfied. We are better than them. They never play real challanges. Neither does Bama.
Sorry, but we should face FLA or another B12 team if the NC is our destiny.
We should be number one, because we are the best Tech team ever, and we have the most exciting and well managed and executed offense in the world. Defense keep on shining~~~

This cames from a OU fan on ESPN’s site:

State of the stats: Think OU’s game with Texas Tech might be fun?

The Sooners rank No. 1 in the Big 12 in total defense (345.6 yards per game), while Tech is No. 2 (351.4).

Tech is No. 1 in total offense (566.3), while OU is No. 2 (549.8).

Tech is first in passing offense (433.7), OU is second (355.5).

OU is No. 1 in scoring offense (51.4 points per game); Tech is No. 2 in scoring defense (22.2).

Sooners are second in rushing at 194.3. Tech, by the way, ranks second in run defense (107.4).

It’s as simple as this…. Tech beats OU, they’re in the Big XII Championship. If OU beats Tech and OSU they’re probably in….
you get the picture??? UT on the otherhand needs some help from OU. The only way UT goes to the Big XII championship is if OU beats Tech and if their BCS ranking is higher than OU’s after a Tech loss and a win over A&M, which they have not been able to do most recently. It appears Mizzou will rep the Big XII North. Who will rep the South??? It actually appears to be quite simple.
    BEAT OU!
