Tech officials soak in Raiders’ big win

By Terry Greenberg | AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

Kent Hance got a few congratulatory calls on Sunday.

“A friend of mine in College Station called and congratulated me … he said it was the greatest game he had ever watched on TV,” he said.

Gov. Rick Perry also called. “Hance … that was an exciting game,” he quoted Perry saying.

So did the president call?

“No … he was probably too shocked,” said Hance, chancellor of the Texas Tech System and master of the quip.

Hance, Tech President Guy Bailey and Athletic Director Gerald Myers were still enjoying the school’s dramatic win over the former No. 1 Texas Longhorns Saturday night at Jones AT&T Stadium and on national television.

For Bailey, his first Tech football season “couldn’t be a better one.”

And Sunday, he was like many Tech fans, struggling with a hoarse throat.

“I don’t have a voice today,” he said, adding he went through the “same emotions as everyone else … excitement, nervousness, anxiousness. I’m delighted we played at that level on a national stage and playing the No. 1 team better than even.”

His wife Jan, who went to Tech and Monterey High School, also had little voice left, he said.

“My wife’s dad … Clarence “Tim” Tillery … played on the freshman team when the varsity was last 9-0,” said Bailey.

Myers said, “It’s the biggest win we’ve ever had but we have games even more important coming up. Maybe we’ll have some other wins that will be just as big or bigger. We all need to come down, get our feet on the ground and get ready for the next game.”

Hance says he’s happy to greet visitors in the chancellor’s suite before and after the game and at halftime, but once the action starts, “I tell people I don’t want anyone bothering me during the game. I watch every little detail.” Then he added, “You can talk to me, but it’s $10 million” … referring to the minimum donation he’d need to stop watching the game.

Hance was intently watching the final minutes.

“When (Texas) started on their last drive, they were starting to eat up the clock and I said I hope they let them score fast so we can get the ball back. Some people around me were surprised,” he said.

Over in the athletic director’s suite, Myers had the same thoughts.

“It was pretty nerve-wracking when that clock was running and (Texas was) going toward the goal line. I was hoping there would be enough time left for us. It was like a slow death,” he said.

Even though Bailey’s only been at Tech a few months, he followed Tech for years because of his wife.

Based on that, and from what he’s seen this year, he had confidence the Raiders could win.

“I figured a minute and a half was time enough,” he said, after Texas took a 33-32 lead.

Back in Hance’s suite, spirits were lifted when Plainview’s Jamar Wall gave Tech good field position after his kickoff return.

A few plays later, Myers had to look away when a Longhorn looked as if he picked off a pass.

“When they had that deflected pass and it looked like that Texas defender caught it I said On no’ and turned around. Then they said he dropped it. You go to lowest of the lows to still having some hope,” he said.

Hance was hoping Tech could get close enough for a field goal, but when Michael Crabtree caught Graham Harrell’s pass and got into the end zone with one second left, the party began.

“My granddaughter was sitting beside me and we grabbed each other and we’re screaming. Bob Herd, (who recently donated $15 million for the petroleum engineering department), was high-fiving me. It was just nuts. Out of nowhere, (Tech regent) Wendy Sitton came over and started hugging me,” he said.

When asked if he was concerned when Tech fans stormed the field two times before the game ended, forcing Tech to kick off from its own 7-yard line, Hance said, “They were just excited, but they need to think if it’s something that will help the team.”

Bailey said, “Hopefully they’ll be more cautious next time. It was a little unnerving. We don’t want to lose a game.”

But he added the fans were generally well behaved.

Myers said, “I don’t want to criticize those students … they created so much excitement all week. It was a great week for Tech and Tech football and the students were a big part of it.

“They set the tone all week with Raiderville,” said Myers, thanking restaurants and Tech coaches who help feed the students as they camped out to get into the game.

“Then to cap it off with a win like that was unbelievable,” he said.

Hours after the game ended, Hance was at home, watching it again.

“I stayed up watching the game again until 2:30,” said Hance. “I didn’t erase it and I’m going to watch it a couple of other times.”

Mike Leach, in all likelyhood, also wants to be at TTU. I think he likes all that he has built for the program and for his identification with the program in the eyes of college football. The only thing that could get in the way is TTU’s ability to keep up with the salary growth in college football. Fans can help with that.

If tt is able to win a game against the mighty Horns every 5-6 years and that keeps you guys energized then more power to you. However, that will NEVER get you mentioned in the same breath as the nation’s top tier teams like usc, lsu, florida, ou and Texas.

Plus, you live in a more beautiful geographic area of the state, you have a big stadium, the largest scoreboard, …should I go on? At Tech, we need to sell our beautiful campus, traditions, the best band in the land, and our amazing coaches like Mike Leach’s ‘fun’ system to overcome these shortcomings. Tech’s facilities keep ramping up thanks to alumni donations (like mine), but I am not any where close to being a Boone Pickens like OSU has in their back-pocket. Brahma Bull, to me it’s sad that you even think of college as a food chain. It was an EDUCATION and an EXPERIENCE for me. I had a wonderful time. I didn’t go to a big city commuter school. I went to a lively, fun, friendly college campus that was alive seven days a week. I wasn’t in a sorority and didn’t party my heart out, but I had an absolute blast at Tech! I wouldn’t trade that for the world.

As for your “food chain” comment, I work with Harvard grads, who office on all four sides of me. My work ethic, experience, work skills (many of which I got at Tech), and personality got me here. It’s a shame that you think life is about the name of the college. I think life is about working hard, loving others, and doing the best you can with what life gives you. If I had the self-defeatist attitude that you think us Red Raiders should have, I don’t think I’d be here. But thankfully I don’t have your attitude! Brahma Bull… It’s obvious that you have self-esteem issues. I’m sure you are a hoot to be around at birthday celebrations and weddings. Calling out how the groom should have married someone else, or how much worse someone looks since their last birthday.
I graduated in the top 10% of my respected 5A high school, and I could have gone to any of the state schools. Which did I choose? Texas Tech. I enjoyed and had a great time in my trips to Austin and College Station, but wouldn’t trade them for the education and experience I had at Tech. I even lived in Austin doing a coop with IBM for a while during college. Loved it. In so doing, I worked along side UT and aTm students. Interesting thing was that I of all the schools I had been taught more skills and had more understanding of design than any of the other schools programs. It did surprise me at the time, but it also showed me that Texas Tech is a contender in every area. Football field or college classroom.

I really don’t have to defend Tech. I write this so you will know how ignorant you sound. People were saying the same thing you are saying 12 years ago when I was considering schools. Funny thing is many of my friends that went to other schools ended up wishing they had come to Tech instead. And some did transfer.

Every school has its pluses and minuses, but its pretty obvious that you are narrow minded and sulking about your loss. Our team just outplayed your team. Maybe we do it again against OSU and OU, maybe not. But we did against UT. So, thanks for the posts and the ridicule. At least we know we hit a nerve.

I am visiting your site because Coach Fulmer has resigned as head coach at the University of Tennessee and your Coach Leach is the current favorite to replace Fulmer (knoxnews.com). He may not be interested but this place is football crazy. The last time Tennessee had fewer than 60,000 fans at a game was in the 1950’s – when that was the stadium capacity. We have averaged over 100,000 at every home game for over 15 years and there will be 90,000 show up Saturday to watch a 3 win UT play Wyoming. No one really knows what the upper limit of pay will be for an SEC coach – the 4 highest paid coaches college or pro are here now – but the $5,000,000+ Saban is getting at AL seems like a bargain to many Tennessee fans.

Not all the UT fans were complete losers, but in the bar I was at far more than half dont seem to have a grasp on anything resembling civilized behavior. I plan to retire to West Texas in a few years, and as Mac Davis says “you can bury me in Lubbock Texas…in my jeans”.

And I guess that would be YOUR mistake — you might be missing out on a fine employee. Sounds like my daughter might be wiser than you.

I just offer the following to those that have an interest in TTU academics. I attended Tech, B.S.Ch.E 86. I turned down full scholarships to MIT and the Colorado School of Mines before I choose Tech. Tech’s offer of scholarships and in-state tuition to high-performing applicants was a generous and important contributing factor, though the attention to undergraduate education in the College of Engineering was the main draw.

I was awarded an National Science Foundation fellowship to graduate school on graduation from Tech – thanks to an excellent and broad undergraduate curriculium, as well as unique opportunties to interact with Tech professors for individual research projects – and choose to do my Ph.D. at UC Berkeley (Ch.E.,1991).

I had the oppurtunity to teach a few key Chemical Enginering courses at UCB for a few years (unit operations lab) and compare students there to the folks back at Tech. I would put Tech’s undergraduate engineering education up against ANY school in the country. Period.

At present, I’m a senior manager with a National Laboratory, have hired dozens of recruits, and continue to favor Tech grads for our engineering divisions. I use my education from Tech everyday, and still recall great lectures and content from my many undergraduate courses.

A simple fact is your education is as much in your control and you will succeed in proportion to the dedication you demonstrate. Tech can provide the dedicated staff, professors, courses, facilities, and content, but ultimately, YOU have to want to succeed and learn. I’ll put Tech engineering graduates up against those from high-powered private schools anyday. I know, I’ve hired hundreds from around the country, and Tech continues to provide outstanding basics to our engineers.

I’m pretty pleased where my “low-grade, third rate, frat school” Tech education has taken me, Harvard Medical School and Children’s Hospital. So I guess its a good thing someone from Rice or some other “good” institution wouldn’t have had me, they may have held me back…

    Wreck ‘em!

No doubt TT did itself proud, but like the aggies, you make way too much of a deal out of playing Texas, like it’s the only game there is. Whatever your fixation is with Texas you need to get over it. Your obsession with Texas is like that of a little brother wanting to outdo his big brother. If TT is ever going to get real respect they need to start acting like Texas is just another school and nothing special.

Another reason not to go to TT is because they are a bunch of snobs. They accuse other schools of being snobish but in reality Tech is the real snob. If you read their purerile and pathetic comments you see very quickly they believe themselves to be morally and intellectually superior to all the other schools. My daughter took a tour of TT last year and she said all they talked about was how students at other schools were just a bunch of rich kids or they thought they were something special, too special to go to a school like Tech. She said the few professors she met seemed to be real nice but the kids she met were just full of themselves. She attends Sam Houston State Univ in Huntsville, which she says doesn’t have the inferiority complex that students at Tech had. Maybe Tech should look itself in the mirror and take stock before it attacks others schools for being something less than perfect as Tech seems to think it is.
