Official: Ticket scam stings about 500 fans

By Don Williams
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal

Hundreds of people got the Adrenalin rush of scoring a ticket at the last minute to Saturday’s Texas Tech-Texas game only to find out they’d been scammed.

A Tech official said Sunday that an estimated 500 people bought counterfeit tickets around campus. They were denied entry to Jones AT&T Stadium, because the phony tickets showed seat locations that had already been sold.

Texas Tech fans cheer on the Red Raiders success throughout Saturday evening's win against Texas.

Tickets are scanned at the gate for admission, where invalid bar codes revealed the fraud.

“They got robbed is what it was,’’ said Dave Welsh, Tech assistant athletic director for ticket operations. “These (counterfeiters), I think they hit the big-time bowl games and the Super Bowl and so forth. They look just like our regular season-ticket stock, but the bar codes obviously aren’t going to match. It was heartbreaking seeing all these people get ripped off.’’

About 1,600 tickets remained for Saturday’s Texas Tech-Oklahoma State game as of early Sunday afternoon.

Tech officials expect the potential for more of the same problem with a battle of top-10 teams in Lubbock for the second straight week. Tech was No. 2 in The Associated Press Top 25 and No. 3 in the USA Today coaches’ poll released Sunday, and Oklahoma State is No. 8 in both.

Welsh said many of the victims indicated they’d bought tickets in areas just off campus, especially just east of the stadium. Tech became aware there was problem about four hours before game time. Welsh said when gates opened, he went to Gate 1 and personally handled about 200 cases of counterfeit tickets.

He said $200 was the most commonly heard amount for which the phony tickets had been sold.

“Despite the historic nature of the victory,’’ Welsh said, “for us in the ticket office, it was kind of demoralizing to see people get scammed like that, because there was not a thing we could do about it. There were no other tickets to sell to people who got ripped off. It was just a bad situation.’’

The Tech-UT game, which Tech won 39-33, was sold out early in the season.

Welsh said one of those victimized was a Tech football player trying to buy a ticket for a friend.

Tech began using the bar-coding system in 2005. Had a similar scam cropped up before then, Welsh said the logistical nightmare would’ve been worse because of the potential for friction between fans.

“If you keep them out of the stadium, that helps prevent people getting the same seat in the same section and having to determine which (ticket) is good, which one is the bad,’’ Welsh said. “It’s fortunate that we actually bar-code tickets, because it does prevent this thing actually getting into the stadium.’’

Is there any way for a scanner to be placed in a kiosk on Tech campus or something similar so that people who buy tickets can go there automatically and scan it to see if it is valid? It sure would help.

Next time the ticket buyers should use their camera phones to take a picture of the ticket seller. Just the idea of a scammer’s picture being out there might discourage some of the thieves and might even help the police since the big operation might involve enough money for law enforcement to get involved.

Offering a kiosk for authenticating tickets would be a great help. I purchased 2 tickets for $500 at 12:30pm on gameday and tried to find someone at the stadium to validate them, but the ticket office didn’t open until 2pm. We were not able to go back until much later.
Is there any legal recourse and how would one go about it?

A friend got scammed “twice”. Once when he bought the
counterfiet tickets and a second time by a female ticket
attendant who took $100.00 (under the table) to let him
pass through. I think the second one hurt the most
because Tech employees are taking advantages as well.

ok well just to get this out there if you guys would stop purchasing tickets from scalpers then that would put them out of business. secondly if you did stop purchasing from them you would not be out money you would actually have a valid ticket and be able to see the entertainment event you want to see. its as simple as that. no need for a verification kiosk. no need to waste money that can be better spent. plan in advance to purchase tickets to a event you want to see and stop purchasing from those scalpers. once they see we wont buy tickets from them they will stop scalping and you then will be able to get your tickets you want. so sorry to say but if you did lose your money to a scam artist scalper then its your fault not any of the entertainment venues fault for initiating security measures to stop scalping.

Just 1 section blocked off for that piticular business. It keeps Bob at work were he should be, and free’s up tickets for you and me. And Guarentees CO tickets for those people that wanna go.

Most of these times the fake tickets will be printed up once the game is classified as BIG, and drawing enough interest to support the feeding frenzy, the tickets are printed up a few days before the game and sold…However, I bought my tickets,3, the very first week of the season from Stubhub…who guaranteed they were good. All in the same section , same row right next to each other…when we got to the game the first two scanned in good, mine scanned in bad. Now these were bought way in advance of someone making fakes all three looked exactly the same, the same as the people we were going with who had been going for years…I politely disagreed with the ticket taker and bolted into the stadium…I think there may have been a scanner issue as well as bad tickets……….

Our death row is longer than some other states, so they execute their inmates quicker, giving them a bad reputation for doing what they need to do. Get over yourself

This employee makes more money working with scalpers than they will working the ticket booth. As for those that say, “Don’t buy from the scalpers and they will go away”, don’t bet on it. Rarely does a scalper go home with tickets in his pocket. If people won’t pay the current price, wait until closer to event time — the price will drop and the scalper will still make a profit. ya know…i probably did waste 15 minutes of my life, reading this whole thread, but hey, it was entertaining,
so for a quick touch on the topics.
    fuck the kkk.
i dont care who from texas is in iraq, if i wanted to be there i would.
yes texas kills innocent people everyday, its called justice, now we see why the government is bullshit. texas just does it more.
i dont know where the fuck the drugs got into this.
if joe is 13, its pretty sad hes standing toe to toe with these grown adults….maybe he has a point about texans…but joe you shouldnt mess with them, its not nice to pick on retards.

anywayz, as far as the ticket scalping goes. (THE ACTUAL FUCKING TOPIC)

simply put, its there, it always will be, taking a picture and putting someone in jail for it, isnt gonna stop people, it might cut back a bit, but lets face it, drugs, murder, rape etc are illegal, but how many courtrooms do you see empty every weekday morning???? exactly.

as far as the teens getting ripped off
apparently they were ripped off by the teachers who were supposed to be educating them.
commonsense tells you thats a bad idea.
    and $200 dollars a ticket?
who the fuck comes up with prices for shit, thats as bullshit as paying like $12.00 for a tank of gas.
FOOT BALL IS A FUCKING SPORT
it is for fun, it shouldnt be a way for fucking people to basically extort money for fucking everyone (AND DONT GIVE ME THAT ITS NOT BULLSHIT, IT IS, ALONG WITH EVERY OTHER THING IN THIS COUNTRY THAT WAS ONCE FUN)

Now stop wasting time trying to get rid of the problem, as i said, make it illegal, arresting a few people wont stop it.
and if its that big of a deal to you,
why dont you go out, and start campaigning around college (and high school and whatever other) campuses informing people of the dangers of buying tickets like such, since thats the only way your going to have any actual impact on this annoyance of a problem.

now before any runs there mouth, im not here to argue, im making my point, im not 13, i do have a job, and i know very much of what i speak. so please, dont bother trash talking me, however i will say its hilarious that you let joe lead your lives around for so long.

and one last note, whoever the guy was that said everyone was being too childish and ended his post with “Childish Mother Fuckers”…..your a moron…go play in traffic.

ANTI is right, Joe owned all you guys even though the topics that he dominated had no relivance to this article.

i once was scammed buy a scalper, i bought some tickets for a cubs/cards game in stl and when the tickets got scanned they were real but someone had already got into the stadium and then passed them back through the fence to the scalper. So the next day i went to the same scalper, i knew who he was but he had no idea who i was, i asked to see the tickets and when he handed my the 4 tickets i took off with them towards the gate…got into the game, got drunk and had a hell of a time. My theory is: what is the scalper going to do: A) shoot you, but not in the middle of thousands of people. B) chase you and get the tickets back, but if i yell at the top of my lungs that this dude is trying to mug me in front of those thousands of people…he will either stop of get arrested for something……who is the cop going to beleive and innocent fan trying to watch a ball game or a guy on the street trying to make a living by scamming the innocent fan. C) Not realize i was gone until it was to late, seriously i ran about 12 steps into a crowd and turned around to see if i was being chased and dude didnt realize i had ripped him off until it was to late.

P.S. the tickets i got scammed on were 10 dollar standing room only tickets that i paid 30 for. bought 4 tickets for $120. the next day the tickets i took from him were club seats( free beer and food) face value of 114, 4 tickets worth $456.

Here’s the deal. if you buy tickets from someone that isnt licenced to sell tickets, you run the risk of buying duped tickets. it doesnt matter if you are aware of that or not; thats the case. you cant expect to drive a vehicle for 50 years and NOT get into an accident.

is it your fault the tickets were duped? no. However, you still bought duped tickets. Whenever you buy from a scalper, you pay a lot more and have a HUGE chance at getting duped. I’m not going to say that those people deserved it, but i will say that they walked into that situation of their own decision.

If everyone was honest, we wouldnt have scalpers in the first place; but alas, everyone isnt honest. It is most unfortunate that trusting people have to find that out the hard way.

i only have one very legitimate question: “Why would you give someone you didnt know 200$ USD for a ticket to a sporting event that will be yesterday’s news tomorrow while not knowing if said ticket was even valid in the first place?

Hey, you either purchase a ticket from a legit place or this is part of the risks you take baby!

    exactly, harley.

this isnt a safe world, so plan accordingly in your decision-making process.

scalpers have no interest in being your friends.

as for the picture phone idea:

okay, so now you have a face. do you have a name? a location? an address? a phone number? no. a picture may say a thousand words, but it doesnt say any of those.

The people who bought the duped tickets need to take responsibility for their actions. you can’t say, “Oh that bad man/woman sold me this bunk ticket!”

everyone knows NOT to buy a ticket from a scalper. you made the decision to give an unknown person your money, live with it.

if you wouldn’t have given him your money, you wouldnt be in this situation. Yes, be mad; but learn from your mistakes.

Whoa! whoa! whoa! Scalpers don’t need to be put in prison. In fact, it’s the very idea of it being illegal that invites criminals to do the job, because they’re the only people willing to involve themselves in more illegal activity. This is what has created the whole scam! The people who counterfeit come from cities where ticket selling has been made illegal. It’s the perfect way to corner the market, because there will always be a demand, and if you take away honest, and law abiding businessmen, you eliminate competition for criminals thaqt are capable of other illegal things like counterfeiting!! The market becomes their oyster to handle any way they see fit. This is why the constitution is so important, and mindsets like those who are quick to suggest punishment don’t realize they’ve bought themselves a full time job. So unless you yourself are ready to go out and enforce the punishment of all criminal activity, you should look at how it became this way. Criminals sell tickets, because it was made a crime. Had it never been made a crime then honest brokers would replace and seek out justice for those responsible for this activity. Why do you think Al Capone was so successful? Because alcohol was made illegal!! It cornered the market for only someone who was willing to engage in crime, which in turn invites other illegal activity!! So then came guns, and then murder!! I’m glad many of you are not judges.. I would be highly concerned for us all. I know an awesome ticket guy who owns his own ticket company and has always put accountability first so that everybody can be at ease with their entertainment experience. He is not a crook. He barely makes enough money, and has a child he works hard for to give him a future. You can find him online for all concerts and sports @ http://www.ventureco-op.com (for anthing in the country. You should all consider one more thing. When buying a ticket from someone on the street, always look for one familiar or redeeming characteristic, in his attitude or expression that you can identify with someone you’ve trusted before with money, and you’ll find that your luck will change in your purchasing experiences. In other words, trust, but cut the cards people. But please remember, everytime you make something illegal, you’ve given the mob new opportunity to take advantage..

It seems like this is starting to happen in a lot of places. This weekend 4 friends and i drove 7 hours from Tuscaloosa to Baton Rouge to see Alabama play LSU. After searching for a bit for 5 tickets together we found someone who sold to us 5 tickets at $135 each. $675 later we are at the gates getting rejected by the ushers and the ticket office tells us there is nothing they can do. I saw a friend a bit later and he showed me his stub, the 2 tickets were exactly alike it seemed. We searched for 15 minutes or so and didn’t see one difference. It’s such a shame that people can do that and get away with it so easy. Oh well, lesson learned I guess. At least we came away with a win. Roll Tide!

in regards to ronnie pauls comments,
ok no offense, but thats the dumbest thing ive ever heard.
CRIMINALS DONT DO SOMETHING BECAUSE ITS MADE ILLEGAL
CRIMINALS DO SOMETHING WRONG WHICH IS WHY IT IS MADE ILLEGAL.
they didnt make ticket scalping illegal to hurt innocent people selling real tickets.
THEY MADE IT ILLEGAL CAUSE CRIMINALS WERE SELLING FAKE TICKETS FOR QUICK CASH.
not to seem like a dick, but obviously your not the smartest crayon in the box, if you even made it to the box.

just cause they make murder illegal doesnt drive someone to go kill someone,
no they made murder illegal cause someone went and killed someone over something stupid.

drugs arnt illegal for shits and giggles either genius,
they made drugs illegal cause they kill people.
that didnt make criminals say, “hey thats illegal, dude lets do it”
no, they were selling and using drugs before it was illegal and it was killing many people know had no clue they could die from doing the drugs, which is why it is now illegal.

    speeding is illegal,
do you think they made that illegal for fun?
do you think people say hey, lets speed just cause its illegal???
    NO YOU MORON.
they made speeding illegal because people were driving extremly fast, and causeing accidents and killing people.
and people speed cause they either wanna get somewhere faster or have a fun time going really fast which is extremly dangerous.
THEY DONT DO IT CAUSE ITS ILLEGAL GENIUS!!!

al capone didnt start handling alcohol JUST because it was illegal.
it becoming illegal made it a milestone of quick cash for him.
if it was LEGAL and still wouldve made him easy quick cash.
GUESS WHAT!!!! HE STILL WOULDVE HANDLED IT!!!!

altogether there might be 1000 criminals IN THE WORLD, mostly consisiting of teenagers or dumbasses, who actually go out and commit crimes JUST because its illegal,

now when you look at the millions of criminals out there,
statistically they damn sure didnt break the law just to be breaking the law.

ill be checking this page for the next week or so,
so if youd like to dispute anything i said, feel free.

and like i said not trying to be offensive and shit,
but thats the dumbest thing ive ever heard and i openly state my mind.
