Nationwide, Tech fans were psyched by the final score

By Joshua Hull | AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

Texas Tech fans may think a bar on the Upper East Side of New York City would be an unlikely place to hear the chant “Raider Power,” even during a big game.

But Red Raiders were out in force at the East End Bar and Grill near 86th Street and First Avenue in New York, where more than 50 Tech fans joined in the celebration felt by alumni across the world Saturday as their team knocked off the former No.1 ranked Texas Longhorns.

“When we won, somebody ripped down the Tech flag and got up on the bar and started waving,” said Kelly Buchanan, co-director of the New York Tech alumni chapter. “It was our biggest turnout ever.”

Fortunate enough to find a bar willing to sponsor her organization, Buchanan said around 35 Red Raiders usually turn out to watch Tech anytime a game is televised. Saturday, that number jumped to more than 50.

“We had a huge table in the bar, and nobody would sit down,” she said of the crowd. “We were confident on the outside, but I think we were secretly praying.”

Bottles of champagne were uncorked when Michael Crabtree caught the game-winning touchdown pass, she said, and even those not associated with the group got in on the celebration.

Whether at a watch party or in the comfort of their living rooms, Red Raiders at home and abroad made sure to catch the game. According to comments left on The A-J Web site, lubbockonline.com, celebrations in Fance, Italy and even South Korea were well under way.

Bill Windsor, a 1972 Tech alum in Atlanta, said he and his wife couldn’t contain themselves after the final second ticked down on the clock.

“It was just the two of us watching the game, and she went crazy,” Windsor said of his wife. “You couldn’t wipe the smile off my face with a brick.”

With the race for the national title heating up, Windsor said he’s seen a lot of support in SEC country for the Red Raiders, even if it’s just to boost the rankings of teams like Alabama, but it doesn’t matter to him.

“My wife came downstairs this morning and asked if I was watching the game again,” he said. “She said she could still hear the sound of the band in her head from last night.”

Traveling in from Los Angeles, Tech alum Jeff Pirtle said he couldn’t have picked a better game to come back to Lubbock while his West Coast friends watched the game on TV.

“They were all really cheering me on at work last week because they wanted Tech to beat Texas so USC would go up in the polls,” Pirtle said.

In Philadelphia, Elizabeth Pohl said her alumni chapter couldn’t find a place to get together, but that didn’t stop them from calling each other after each big play.

“We were absolutely hysterical,” Pohl said. “Here I am on the East Coast, and I can’t wait to go into work tomorrow and talk to people about it.”

Windsor added, “We’re all going to be dreaming it for the rest of our lives, but even if it ends right here you’ve got the happiest group of students and alumni and townsfolk in the whole wide world,” he said “If we don’t win another game again we can die happy.”

But, since Red Raiders are good sports (unlike others I won’t name) I will refrain from cheering every 5 seconds, Go Red Raiders! I’ll just smile and say I knew they could do it.
One thing I wanted to make known to everyone is that it’s not much of a secret that the University of Tennessee is looking for a new football coach. And from what a whole lot of people are saying here is that they want Mike Leach, our coach. Some people are even talking like it’s a foregone conclusion that if Tennessee offers the job to Coach Leach, he’ll be coming to Knoxville. I want everyone to know that and to try to prevent it. I don’t think Mike Leach would go to Tennessee, but I want to get the work out to everyone so that it won’t happen. Thanks! Go Red Raiders! Beat the Cowboys!

As a diehard Longhorn fan, I congratulate your team on a great game. You definitely out-played us. However, you should be equally ashamed of some of your fans. We met some really nice people in Lubbock over the weekend, and almost all would immediately apologize for the behavior of Tech fans. Friday night we went with some Tech friends to the stadium, and we were called all sorts of vile names. When we got to our seats at the game, the security guard came over to tell us he would be nearby if we had any problems. The people around us were so disrespectful and foul that we had to leave our $200/each seats at the beginning of the second quarter. They were laughing. Now I know what the polite Tech fans were apologizing for. Winning is a good thing. Winning without class is not. My memories of Lubbock are completely tainted, not because of the game, but because of people who don’t know the meaning of good sportsmanship.

There is nothing wrong with Texas Tech Red Raider fans enjoying a sweet victory. We’ve waited years to enjoy such a moment. Saying we should “get over ourselves” is ludicrous. Do you think Longhorn fans would have “gotten over themselves” if they had won the game?

The football programs at UT and OU have been recognized for years as being exceptional. Texas Tech is playing top-notch football this year and deserves no less.

No one can say for certain what the outcome will be when we play OSU and OU. If the Red Raiders play as well as they are capable, we certainly have a good chance to win both games.

Your attempt to minimize Tech’s success in football and assert that our grads received an average education is just so many sour grapes and a feeble attempt to insult us. Perhaps it is you that should get over yourself.

    To Mellanied and Steer -

Rude, crude and violent football fans exist everywhere these days. It’s not something that only happens at Tech. Such behavior is wrong regardless of where it occurs. I’m sorry to hear what happened this past weekend, but Tech and Lubbock are full of kind and friendly people that demonstrate good sportsmanship.

The kids that will go to Tech will be the one’s that UT, OU and LSU could not accept. It’s the truth and not mean spirited. Enjoy your victory, there is still a lot of football to be played.

I don’t think Tech can beat 3 top 10 teams in one season, much less in 4 weeks.

I’m a 1999 Tech grad living amongst the CU Buffs in Denver. What an amazing game and evening on Saturday. My house was the gathering point on Saturday to watch the game. The guest list was made up of grads from Kentucky, Wisconsin, Temple, Ohio U, & Florida….and by the 4th quarter, everyone of them was screaming as loud as me! The Gator fan obviously had other motives in cheering for Tech….but I will take it!

On the point of the rude fans….when I was at Tech as a student I witnessed classless actions in both Lubbock and Austin by a few fans/students of both schools. But…the great majority of students and fans are respectful and decent….I was treated well in my trips to Austin. Randye….I agree….as Tech fans we need to do our best to police our own. Don’t be an idiot! Win with class and enjoy the gift that this amazing group of kids is giving us!

I am heading down to Lubbock on Friday for the OSU game and I can’t wait! Let’s pack Jones and make it rock!

Techsans, congrats on a GREAT, classy win!! It’s long overdue, and I’ve had people in my adopted home stopping me in the halls and on the streets to tell me what an exciting game that was and how great the Red Raiders played. It’s high time that the pundits finally realized that Tech can hold its own.

Speaking of which, Michael, Tech won’t conveniently roll over and play dead for OSU or OU. If one of them beats us, they’ll have earned it. Neither of them will be easy for us, and we know it, but we are going to savor this weekend’s victory for a long, long time. It’s so much sweeter when you’re the underdog, as your petulant comments indicate we are.

I went to grad school at Tech and taught there. I had football players, baseball players, and volleyball players for students, and they were all good. I taught some of Coach Knight’s student-athletes, and if there is a coach on campus who supports academics, he does. As for me, I earned a doctorate there and now teach in a university. Average education? Tech? I don’t think so. Michael, I’ll stack any one of my students from those days against you any day of the week.

As for being competitive every so many years, Texas isn’t the only team we play. Look at our bowl appearances since Coach Leach came aboard. That’s hardly a sign of an also-ran team with an average record.

What’s average — and below the belt — are comments from jealous people like you who can’t stand it when people like us have a success like this to celebrate.

    WRECK ‘EM TECH!!

As an alum ‘85 and mother of a senior ‘10 and incoming freshman ‘09, it is up to us all to stop this nonsense of rude behavior off the field. These players play each other with the utmost respect on the field, we should to the same in the stands and on the streets. My oldest daughter witnessed some students harassing a UT couple at a bar in Lubbock on Friday night. She apologized to them because she wanted these visitors to know there is more good behavior than bad behavior. My youngest daughter was on the field and witnessed a fan throwing a drink on a UT player. She said it made her sick. Alums, Students, Faculty, Administration, Fans…stand up for who we REALLY are…and stop the behavior of a few weak people representing OUR University in a manner less than acceptable. I apologize for any rude behavior encountered in OUR HOUSE. It’s the same house I’ve been spit on by an Aggie, and the same house my daughter has had a coke poured on her head for being in the OU section in a Tech shirt. For all fans…lets leave the lack of respect for the opposing team/school/fan behind. We’re better than this.

I spoke with a girl today who was in Austin on a club soccer trip along with the men’s soccer team who got kicked out of THREE bars in Austin for using Raider chants, along with getting flipped off by the UT football team on their way back to Lubbock.
Sports and the emotions brings out the worst in people along with a little booze thrown in. Lack of class and respect boils down to the individual fans themselves and not the community. The small isolated actions of certain “fans” ruins the atmosphere for all involved. Lubbock is a great town and so is Austin. I’m sorry that we’re not rated in the “Top 10 of Party Schools” every year despite us being a “party school” like UT is. Oh and last time I checked Texas Tech’s football program is ranked rather high with player graduation rate of 79 percent compared to UT’s 50 percent.

Sports is temporary, but an education lasts a lifetime.

I’d finally like to add, that it really doesn’t matter where you attend college as long as you get a degree and use it. Great people have gone on to do great things from both UT and Tech.

So please, be kind and treat others accordingly.

    Sincerely,

    A Tech Student

Enough of the ” you” (implying ALL Texas Tech fans) “should be ashamed of yourselves…” Take a college football game of NATIONAL significance – with a University like Texas and its lofty following…add some fiercely loyal Red Raider fans excited to play AT HOME against #1….put that game on a national stage…hype it up for a week… ADD about seven hours of tailgating… hundreds of thousands of beers… and you have 15 to 20 thousand people who will SAY and DO things that they normally would be ashamed of. Those folks wore red and black AND BURNT ORANGE! It’s sad but true… if you go to a game like that – you can EXPECT to witness some human beings acting uncivil to each other!

Here’s the TRUTH: People who behave that way SHOULD be ashamed whether their team wins or loses – but the whole idea of one team’s fans being above it all, and another teams fans being judged harshly and blasted is nothing but sour grapes.

The really funny thing about all this: IT HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH THOSE GREAT TEAMS THAT PLAYED THEIR HEARTS OUT! It’s a bunch of immature (regardless of age) creeps with no right to associate with real winners.

The Longhorns are a fantastic team and Colt a standout QB – that’s what makes this win so great – that even though they are that good, Harell, Crabtee, a fear inspiring offensive line, underrated defense and a mad pirate coach in Leach are BETTER.

Two years ago, I went to the Insight Bowl when Tech played Minnesota and was as proud as I could be when we won. As much as I’d love to see my team out here in the Tostitos Bowl, I’ve never been to Florida and look forward to making a trip out there in the near future!!

Mike Leach is a very real hot topic of conversation as Tennessee’s new head coach…facilities, money, size of stadium, prestige, are all superior at Tennessee to most programs around the country, so it WILL be difficult for him to turn the offer down IF he is offered the job,

I don’t know about Tennessee being all that superior, Tech is a fine school, first rate facilities, Mike likes it here and his scheme in building something here is more important to him than glitter. It might be difficult if offered but that hasn’t happened yet. No one knows for sure what’s in a persons mind but I do know that he enjoys what he’s got here in Lubbock. As far as money, how much does a person need. I don’t think money is necessariy a factor at his level. So just because people are talking doesn’t mean diddily. I get tired you people always thinking that the grass is greener somewhere else besides Lubbock. Lubbock is a great place.
