Lady Raiders kick off season with exhibition rout of Roos

By Travis Cram | AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

If the Lady Raiders can keep this up throughout the season, there may be no end to their winning.

Senior Forward Dominic Seals led Texas Tech with 22 points and 15 rebounds in a 109-25 win over the Melbourne Roos on Sunday at the United Spirit Arena in the first exhibition basketball game of the 2008-09 season.

She and five other Lady Raiders finished in double-figures.

Seals took hold of the game early on, hitting seven of her first nine shots for 14 points – part of an 18-0 run to start the first half.

Tech head coach Kristy Curry said even though the game was won early, she emphasized the need to get plenty of minutes for her younger players and hold Melbourne to as little points as possible.

“The biggest thing is to just get started,” she said. “Experience. Just get as many players as much experience as we can put Kierra (Mallard), Jordan (Barncastle) and (Tilmila) Martin in … the goal of the game defensively was to make sure we held them under 30 and we talked about that at the half.”

The Lady Raiders had runs of 18-0, 17-0 and 18-0 through the first half to take a 56-8 lead into the break.

Melbourne finally got on the board when Esther Timmermans hit a 3-pointer to make it 18-3 – her only field goal of the game.

The Roos struggled early with poor shooting and a tough Tech defense that forced nine turnovers in the first 10 minutes and 27 total.

Freshman forward Jordan Barncastle and freshman center Kierra Mallard got their first minutes in a Tech uniform.

Mallard got her first double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Barncastle added 6 points and 7 rebounds.

“At first I was kind of nervous,” Mallard said, “but after I started playing well it was fine.”

The only struggle the Lady Raiders had in the first half came from outside the arc, hitting only 4 of 12 attempts.

Tech missed its first five three point attempts until Keisha Walker hit the first of her four threes and 10 total for the Lady Raiders.

Tech finished 34.5 percent from behind the arc.

The Lady Raiders will play their second and final exhibition game at 2 p.m. on Sunday against the Houston Jaguars before the regular season begins on Nov. 14 against Idaho.
