Red Raiders Notebook 11-02-2008

Texas Tech’s game next Saturday against Oklahoma State will be a 7 p.m. kickoff televised by ABC, a Tech spokesman said.

The time and network are the same as for Saturday’s Tech-Texas game.

View from Miami

Texas Tech made a strong impression on two Orange Bowl officials in attendance Saturday night, though one said he didn’t expect to see the Red Raiders playing in Miami on New Year’s Day. Because it’s the Orange Bowl’s turn to host the BCS national championship game this season, the Orange Bowl’s traditional Jan. 1 game picks at the bottom of the BCS selections.

“Since we’re hosting also the national championship game, we pick last,’’ Orange Bowl committee member Joseph Millsaps said. “We’ll get the last pick of the eligible teams. I think Texas Tech is much above that. I think they’ll already be gone before we’ll get to them.’’

The sellout crowd on Saturday and the “Raiderville’’ campground outside Jones AT&T Stadium gave the visitors from Miami a positive feeling about Tech. “Raiderville’’’ reached an unofficial population of about 2,700, Tech spokesman Blayne Beal said, with more than 100 tents.

“We’ve had a great two days here, I’ll tell you that much,’’ Millsap said. “We’ve met a lot of wonderful people. I can’t believe the enthusiasm with the fans and the administration and the players. Just the sight of all those kids camping out at the stadium was interesting to see.’’

The Rose Bowl was represented at the game by past presidents Michael Riffey and Libby Evans Wright. As far as they – or anyone from Texas Tech – know, it was the first time Rose Bowl reps have been to Lubbock for a game.

Riffey and Evans Wright said the purpose of the visit was to visit with the athletic directors and do homework on Texas Tech. They acknowledged that, all other things being equal, the Rose Bowl prefers to adhere to its traditional matchup of Pac 10 and Big Ten conference teams.

“The new contract with ABC basically stipulated that if we can get our traditional game, that’s the way we would go,’’ Riffey said. “But if we don’t have one of those teams, then we have the option to go outside to virtually any conference.’’

The Rose Bowl’s eight-year contract with the Pac 10, Big Ten and the Tournament of Roses extends through 2014.

Love to see the ’Horns

Three Tech players with a history of playing well against Texas showed up again. Inside receiver Eric Morris scored his fourth career touchdown against the Longhorns.

Defensive tackle Colby Whitlock, who had a career high 10 tackles and four tackles for losses last year in Austin, had a stellar game that started with a tackle for a safety on Texas’ first offensive snap. He wound up with a team-high eight tackles, two behind the line.

“I don’t know what it is,’’ Whitlock said of the reasons for his success against Texas. “I wish we played them a couple more times this season.’’

Split end Edward Britton caught seven passes for 139 yards, both career highs. His previous bests were seven catches for 116 yards in last year’s 59-43 loss at UT. It was a wild game for Britton. He let a would-be touchdown pass go off his hands in the first quarter. On Tech’s final drive, he let another pass glance off his hands, and Longhorns safety Blake Gideon dropped a golden opportunity at the tipped ball.

Other than that, Britton was stellar, catching passes for 46, 34, 13, 15, 11, 10 and 10 yards. The 46-yarder bailed the team out of a jam – third-and-10 from its own 4-yard line and triggered a drive to a touchdown. The last six catches all came in the fourth quarter, three on a drive that ended with a field goal and another on the play before Mike Crabtree’s game-winning touchdown.

Harrell and records

Senior quarterback Graham Harrell broke another one of Kliff Kingsbury’s school records, this one for career passes completed. Harrell already has the school records for career passing yards and passing touchdowns.

Harrell moved into third place for major-college career passing yardage, overtaking Hawaii’s Colt Brennan.

Harrell threw for 474 yards – one more than Kingsbury had in Tech’s last victory over UT, a 42-38 decision in 2002.

Shipley slowdown

Texas wide receiver Jordan Shipley came into the game with 58 catches for 737 yards and 10 touchdowns. The Red Raiders couldn’t shut down Shipley entirely – the speedster from Burnet finished with six catches for 42 yards.

Shipley didn’t catch a pass in the first half, though, and dropped a would-be touchdown pass the one time he did get behind the Tech secondary.

“They did a nice job putting their hands on him past 5 yards,’’ Texas quarterback Colt McCoy said. “They were covering the flats and our deep out routes good. They had a good scheme.’’

Shipley had been on a roll. In victories the previous three weeks over Oklahoma, Missouri and Oklahoma State, he had a composite 34 catches for 369 yards and three TDs.

In brief

Saturday’s attendance of 56,333 was a Jones AT&T Stadium record, breaking the record set on UT’s last visit to Lubbock. … A who’s who of former Tech quarterbacks was in attendance. Among them were Billy Joe Tolliver, Kliff Kingsbury and B.J. Symons. … Tech broke a school record by winning its 11th game in a row. The previous best was 10 straight, accomplished three times. … Tech DT Ra’Jon Henley saw game action for the first time since Oct. 4, when he hurt a knee in the first quarter at Kansas State. Henley played a few snaps against the Longhorns. … Junior QB Colt McCoy became Texas’ career passing leader. He has 8,452 yards, breaking the previous school record of 8,353 by Major Applewhite (1998-2001). … Jordan Shipley’s 45-yard punt return for a third-quarter touchdown was his first punt return of the season. … Texas P Justin Tucker averaged 56.8 yards on four punts. Tucker used an unconventional style, running to his right before launching punts. … Texas WR Quan Cosby caught a pass for the 40th consecutive game.

Honestly, Britton’s two incompletions would have been great catches, 1 in 10. They were hot throws, and off the tip of his fingers, The one in the end zone”he was bumped” no elevation and the one at the end, could have had more placement down and out or low and in, If the interception was made,I shutter to think? Great Game Son, Every closer needs a Set up Man and down the stretch there is no better. LOVE DAD! Guns UP#27

I agree with Sr, the two passes talked about in the notebook were virtually not catchable.

QC was often on the sideline nursing an injury…

The UT radio crew said Quan aggravated a back injury on the first play of the game. He entered for various plays in the first half. After halftime the sideline reporter said he was questionable, and by the end of the 3rdQ he reported that he would not play the rest of the night.

    Yeah, Britton was great.

But you can’t expect the QB to put the ball right on the numbers every throw. Sometimes you have to make a great play. The one in the first quarter would have been a good catch, but I’ve always felt that if you get your hands on it you should catch it. It’s not like Eddie just had fingertips on it..he had his entire hands. The one on the last drive was in excusable. It hit him in the numbers.

All of this isn’t to slam Britton for sure, because without him we don’t win that game. But those drops were just as much his fault as Graham’s.
