It’s fan-demonium as Tech beats UT in final second

By Joshua Hull | AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

In Dinah Washington’s famous recording, she sings “what a difference a day makes.” For Red Raiders on Saturday night at Jones AT&T Stadium, it was more like 1 minute and 33 seconds. In that time, the lead between Texas Tech and the University of Texas switched hands twice, a missed catch almost resulted in a Longhorn interception deep in their own territory and Tech sealed the fate of the game with a literal last-second touchdown.

“It was the most intense thing ever,” said Tech freshman Abhishek Damle as he stood in the middle of the field after stands full of black-clad Red Raider faithful poured onto the fake grass.

Texas Tech's Eric Morris rests on the shoulders of Tech students on the field at Jones AT&T Stadium on Saturday night after Tech's 39-33 win over No. 1 Texas.

Despite the toll of Halloween festivities and long nights in Raiderville, the stadium was filled with a record 56,333 fans, including a large number of Texas fans wearing burnt orange.

“They’re spirited,” said Tech senior Jessica Strahan of her fellow fans, many of whom were wearing eye patches in honor of the team’s adopted pirate theme. “It is absolutely incredible.”

Brandon Montfort said he believes Tech’s victory showed that the team’s ready to seriously contend for a national title. “I just couldn’t be more excited,” Montfort said. “I’ve known this entire season we were gonna go all the way.” Even though Tech took out the No. 1 team, Taylor Insall of Abilene doesn’t expect to see the Raiders making a bid for the No. 1 slot.

“I didn’t expect Texas being down because of Colt McCoy’s ability,” Insall said of the Longhorns. “They’re not playing up to number one hype, and Tech should honestly win.”

Like many Texas fans at halftime, Wilkie Coyler said his alma matter wasn’t playing up to its potential, which he believes would have brought the Longhorns to victory.

“We gotta hit (Tech quarterback Graham) Harrell, and we will,” Coyler said optimistically at halftime. “We’re not worried at all.” Carl Detering, a Texas student, said he believes Tech’s fans had a major impact on the Red Raiders’ victory. “Tech expects to lose the game, so if they don’t win, they’ve got nothing to lose,” Detering said. “I wish they’d shut up.”

Les Miller, a 1973 graduate of Tech from Abilene, said he didn’t consider Tech’s performance to be surprising but rather what most fans had hoped.

His son, John Miller, said it was nice to see Tech’s defense pull the team through in a way many fans may not be used to.

As for the future? “I think they’re making their statement tonight,” he said of the victory.

I am very pleased that the Red Raiders finally won a big game. I know that sentiment is not unusual right now among Tech fans. I am a graduate of Tech Class of 1955.

I was NOT proud of the way the fans at the game went completely, stark-raving mad at the (almost) end of the game. Their childish and unrestrained behavior in pouring onto the field resulted in the two unsportsman-like behavoir penalties. That COULD have been disatrous IF Texas had had even ONE snap of the ball, they might have made a score.

My hat is off to the Tech players and coaches! THEY remain undefeated and a championship class of guys!

I watched it from my brewpub here in Madison, WI. All I could say to the non-Raiders surrounding me (but cheering Tech for my benefit) was that they had no idea just how big this was. A couple of Longhorn fans were sitting nearby, but since we started the game by stuffing them for a safety they were pretty quiet. That is until Texas took the lead. Then they made the bad call that now was the time to start really lipping off. Then they were reeeeaaalll quiet again while I went absolutely nuts! We still won’t get the respect we deserve, the press won’t leap frog us to No.1 (like they did for Texas), but they can’t ignore us anymore and they can’t continue to put teams with losses ahead of us. Go Raiders, take care of business with the Cowboys and Sooners.

UT totally shut down the high powered Tech offense the entire second half — until one second left.

THAT could be the team’s Achielle’s heel. They had every chance to put the ‘horns away but couldn’t pull the trigger. And allowing a couple of BIG plays on defense didn’t help.

Here is my very accurate prediction from yesterday.
Texas Tech has two guys who will be trying for the Heisman trophy. Incredible athletes. Big play makers. Gamblers. Ready to take any chance. When you are heads up with an expert poker player, you shift gears, you ride momentum, you play the percentages, but you realize you must gamble and make them gamble. If we play along slow and ordinary, then the best team in the nation will win. If Tech comes out swashbuckling, throwing the bomb, making the tricky plays, hitting all that much harder, and the fans keep yelling, then we are going to show you a trick hand. They sat the line at 6 or 7. There is at least that much luck involved with 23 year olds playing the biggest game of Tech’s life. If you come to Lubbock from Austin, put your money in your shoe. We have some special tricks we are going to play on you.

This victory was redempion for fans like me who have supported Texas Tech football for 25 years, sitting in the stands through the brutal end of a defeat (remember thoseJerry Moore years?) and many oh-so-close-we-almost-won games (remember 17 seconds-SMU?) Texas used to come in to Jones stadium and beat us psychologically just by running onto the turf. It was nice to finally see that reversed.

It is the spirit, tenacity and dedication of decades of Tech teams and fans that have made this possible. Congratulations Red Raider fans everywhere.

My wife woke up this morning and thought the band was still playing and the crowd was still cheering. I hope they were in Lubbock, but she was just dreaming here in Atlanta, Georgia. What a great win!

We loved watching the game and talking with friends and relatives in the stands via cell phone during the game. We can only imagine what it must have felt like to be in the stands and see that final touchdown!!!!

We actually thought it was pretty cool that the fans showed their enthusiasm a bit prematurely. And having the crowd penalized twice and kicking from the 7 was special! How fitting that the refs (who always try to give Texas the win) would pick up one flag on a UT touchdown when there were TWO blocks in the back and should have been two flags and no TD.

Just imagine. Harrell can win the Heisman. Crabtree can get a trip to New York as a runner-up. Tech can be ranked #1. Crabtree will be a high first round draft pick. And Tech will have 5-star high school football players coming to follow in their footsteps. It won’t be easy to beat OSU and OU and Baylor, but we can do it.

Thanks to Lee Corso for picking Tech and shame on Lee Corso and other announcers for not giving Tech the respect the team deserves after the win.

The only way to get the respect we deserve is to win, win, win, win. Best of luck guys.

i agree with david allen i was not proud of the dimwitted crowd who ran on the field early not only once but twice b4 the game was actually over it could have actually been disasterous for the red raiders if there would have been just more than one second left on the clock…

i hope tech can winn the next few games and keep up the intensity they always have seemed to be one of those teams who have played great against a rival and when the next week comes around they play like old tech. i hope this is not the case of this years texas tech. we need a texas team in the national title hunt!

What a fabulous game! As Texas was about to score near the end, my DH said, “Just give us a minute and a half” . . . just what we needed! GO GUNS!!!

WOW! what a GREAT game! I almost dropped my niece from yelling so hard and jumping up and down. I CAN NOT say enough about this Team, but what a great performance by the entire defense, especially Colby Whitlock! By far my player of the game, made play after play after play. We overcame a couple of bad calls, but that can never be an excuse for defeat, just make a another play the next time you have a chance. So proud to be a RED RAIDER FAN! Let’s enjoy this win, then let’s turn our attention to the “NEXT BIGGEST GAME IN SCHOOL HISTORY”, because from here on out, each game gets more and more important. Stay focused RED RAIDERS, we are on the verge of something HUGE!

Class of 1984, What a game. The ref’s tried to give the game to TU. Punt return should of never happened as two players hit from behind and they put the flags back in their pockets. Crabtree being called for offense interference utter bs. But Tech prevails.

I am so proud of this team the Defense played a heck of a game Whitlock is a beast! Williams from South Hills here in Fort Worth is a Sack Master!

Leach and his coaching staff were prepared the best game plan ever on both sides of the ball.

The O-line for TECH eat tu’s D-front lines lunch.
    Harrell and Crabtree unbelieveable team-mates.
    Edward Britton excellent game!

Announcers Herbstreet and Musburger (were so baised, and wanted TU to win. They never gave our Defense or our Offense any credit, but as soon as TU took the lead they came alive! the suck!

Living in DFW and loving everyminute of it… Now go beat Osu and OU.

Red Raiders you deserve to be number 1. TU beat OU and moved to Number 1. We beat the short horns and should be No. 1.

Thank you for a great win. Wish we were in Lubbock to celebrate with you….TEXAS TECH 39 tea sips 33

Something has to be done by the higher-ups regarding the lousy officials. This was the same crew that ref’ed the OU-Texas Game.
Texas got away with murder in that game and again last night with Tech.
The Big 12 should switch the ref’s and crews out so they work together no more than 2 games a season. I always find it interesting how some things are overlooked by those officials who live in Austin or College Station. Mike Leach made a reference to this last year and was fined. Let’s start a “Rotate the Ref’s” campaign!!
    Go Tech!!

I predicted two upsets this week. Texas Tech will SMASH TEXAS (As you saw Colt’s mouth in the post game interview) and John McCain will win. One down and one to go.

One thing I would like to point out is that Mike Leach was 100% correct last year to speak out about the officials blatant calls in favor of Texas. It cost him $10,000.00 but it will not cost me a thing. Last night they did everthing in their power to help Texas win.

First was the placement of the ball when Colt did a quarterback sneak early in the game on a fourth and one. I guess they thought the Longhorns needed a little help!

Second was the picking up of the flag after the returned punt for a Texas touchdown. The block in the back was obvoius. They needed a little more help.

Third was the offensive interference call on Crabtree when the defender fell down. They needed some help again which made it 25 yards to go for a first/ TOUCHDOWN.

If we would have lost they would accuse us of whining. No whining here. Just a VERY PROUD RED RAIDER. If the NBA officials can be found guilty maybe these guys should be found guilty and fined this year rather than Coach Leach.

We have now proven we are the best team in Texas. Lets keep it going and make all the sportscasters like Brent Musberger depressed because we continue to win,

Last comment. Did you here him annouce once Graham Harrell had passed over 400 yards in the game YET ONLY ONE TOUCHDOWN?????????? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?///////

Agree with MassCom…the refs literally gave ut 7 points with the non-calls on the punt return by ut. One of our guys that was clipped from behind (at the 50) was barely able to get up on his own power after the hit from behind. I thought refs were there to protect the players. No integrity there, imo. And that is just one example

Also, my question is why do we abandon a 4 man D front that was working so well, to go to the 3 man front that didn’t work so well?? That alone almost cost us this game. (Didn’t see ut doing anything so differently on O that it warranted us abandoning use of the 4 man front.)

Also super game by the “D”…. Big congrats to Carbonnet for the interception and the immediate 6 points… also, the big “O” line, and accolades to coaches…. It was meant to be.

Keep this intensity for the rest of the season and gain a life-time memory.

Harrell should be a shoo-in for the Heisman…. What a CLASS GUY…. his tribute to CRAB at the end of the game—was pure class.

I have been a fan of college ball since I was in high school. I never missed a home game when I attended Tech. What amazing young men on this team. The defense was absolutly the best I have seen, and for the offense what patience and ability. My husband is a Cal graduate and so things in our household can get pretty exciting. Several years ago when Tech beat Cal in a bowl game, I had finally convinced my husband that the Big Twelve is unstopable. I do however miss the Southwest Conference and the Cotton Bowl. The “block in the back” flag on Shipley’s punt return (that was picked up?) and the offensive interference call when we were about to score 6 were both very suspect.

But the football gods were smiling on the Raiders last night and not about to allow mere mortals to hose it up. That’s why that freshman DB dropped the INT on the second to last play of the game.

It was preordained. The outcome was revealed to Mr. Crabtree in a dream. ,’>)

The Longhorn fans would not leave me alone this week and now I can’t seem to find them anywhere. I am so proud of what this football team has become. I had the opportunity to meet Mike Leach when he first came to Tech. I was the Doak Hall President and asked him to speak to us at a meet a greet. Fifteen people showed up and he still spoke for an hour. He hung around afterwards and spoke to my girlfriend (now my wife) and I. He is a genuine person and a great coach. What am I saying…. He is a freakin genious. If we loose the rest of our games no one will be calling for him to be fired. Mac Brown looses one big game and the tea sips call for his head. Ruffin is also a great defensive cordinator..

At the beginning of the week, I said that if Texas gives us the same opportunity that they gave OSU, we will capitalize on it. Thank god that they did!!!!!

I have been a die-hard,staunch,bleed red and black Red Raider fan for my entire life! I saved money for tickets to the Cotton Bowl when I was a kid because I had faith we would beat everybody in the SWC . We didn’t. As a young man I moved to east Texas (Beaumont) and landed in a nest of Longhorns and Aggies. I have endured almost 35 years of $#!T,but endured it well. I always made sure there was bowl money in the bank and made as many regular season games I could. I have a Red Raider show truck that makes the local car shows and is a big hit. During football season my house is proudly and boldly decorated with Red Raider characters and signage. I am surrounded by Tea Sippers,Aggies and the ocassional LSU tiger. Some are nice, some are not ,and all of them are condescending.

Just celebrate your victories! There’s no reason to antagonize and be classless and rude to complete stangers/opposing fans after the game! After Tech defeated A&M in College Station, you saw nothing but polite Aggie students. If they’d beaten us, they’d probably have been even nicer! Come on, Raiders, act like we’ve won before! Then, there are the idiots who began tearing up their own stands! We’re not in South LA, guys! It’s pathetic and humiliating, and it will continue until classy Raiders put a stop to it. The only awful thing was the students (12,000) of them storming on the field with one second left. The two penalties resulting still couldn’t rattle this team. Please don’t stoop to the level of TU fans in blaming the refs. If you watch the replays of when Orakpo was injured, he was clearly being held and no call was made. Yes the offensive pass interference was bogus and it was very suspicious when the flag was picked up on the punt return. Let’s not take anything away from the way the team came out and slugged TU in the face. Way to go Colby on the safety.

The crowd at the Gameday set was awsome, I had to hold back tears as I never thought ESPN would bring the show to Lubbock. The game crowd was even better and I hope for a repeat performance this week against OSU as I am bringing my kids from Dallas to our annual trip to Lubbock this week.
