Seven reasons why Lubbock is better than Austin
Off the Caprock, some people think Austin is better than Lubbock. Not so fast, my friend — here are seven reasons why Lubbock is better:
7. Wind and dust build character.
6. Tech mascot perfoms better knowing that horse is not a food.
5. Tech student parking lot still a safe place for McCain stickers.
4. In Lubbock, a “hybrid” is an RV with an electric stove.
3. We grown our own musicians here. We don’t have to import them from West Texas.
2. Village idiots from every county in the state don’t congregate in Lubbock every two years. (Of course, our legislators are not idiots.)
1. You can see the beautiful sunsets because all those darned trees aren’t blocking your view.
–Compiled by Mel Tittle and Michael Duff
Are those suppose to be positives? Pretty lame.

Geesh, the list is pretty lame. As a former Lubbock resident living in Austin, I can give you seven reasons:
7. No snotty-nosed sorority girls running around with cedar fever.
6. No drunk, obnoxious frat boys throwing up on you on 6th street.
5. No homeless “drag worms” pestering you for a handout every time you walk down Guadalupe Street.
4. Gardski’s instead of Threadgills.
3. Prairie Dog Town instead of the Bat Bridge.
2. You don’t have to be politically correct and surrender your “Guns Up” at the door as weapons contraband.
1. (per Mike Leach) Lubbock International Airport is 15 minutes away from any place in Lubbock!

Love it and love the ones Larry posted. Classic. Be careful – Larry the guns up signal is not politically correct. You might hurt some multicultural feelings out there.

Lubbock also has the Goin’ Band from Raiderland, one of the biggest, loudest, the best-dressed, most under-rated, brass-packed marching band in the country! Invite them to ESPN GameDay and the announcers will get totally drowned out. Keep the Showband of the Southwest – Tech has the band Goin’ up the charts.

Also:
You can get anywhere in less than 15 minutes.
Waiting two cycles at a light is uncommon.
People are mainly from small, friendly towns.
Heat doesn’t kill you.
Lower taxes.
Better infrastructure.

Sunsets are absolutely amazing!
Stars light up the sky at night!
And best of all, the windy days keep those
YANKEES and CARPETBAGGERS from building homesteads
here, blocking the wonderful view!
(those windy days are perfect for high school track meets too!)

Austin is the best city in Texas. Lubbock, Tx is not the best city in Texas. First off this is a bad list of comparisons. I mean a really bad list. Austin also is not a dry county. The musician statement is way off. You mock the south congress bridge that has bats there? (Laugh). Also people do like trees. I don’t see how trees make a place not as good to live in. To reference a place is better by either political affiliation is pure arrogance. This is a poor list. I also like how the comments say “A Texas person fits these stereotypes.” Are you serious? The student body is 50,000 students for undergrads. You think all of those people are the same? UT is quite diverse in its student body. Texas Tech will lose Saturday. That is not a prediction it is a fact. The sad reality will sink in when Tech fans wake up on Sunday morning.

Why you so serious? If Austin is so great get out and enjoy it!
How about this Austin is a great place to be a fauxhemian, that is the Austin standard someone that thiks they are some kind of new age hippie but daddy still pays all the bills.

What about the freeways to nowhere ? Californians driving up the cost of all the real estate? The Backyard turning into a shopping center? Pflugerville? Round Rock ? Those things all suck too

Hey, Austin is definitely a beautiful place with the green grass, green trees, rivers and hills. I love to visit there, but am always glad to get out of that traffic.
I love the people of west Texas.

It was a joke you freakin’ tea sips!!!!! A little “tongue and cheek”….get it?!!!! Lighten up! I’m a Red Raider who was born in Austin and grew up in Austin. Went away to school at Tech and loved it. However, the day I graduated, I moved back to Austin. People in West Texas are awesome, but Lubbock in not compared to Austin. Go Tech!!!! Wreck’em!!!

Wonder – You are the one who is arrogant. I suppose you went to UT and live in Austin. Me too, so here’s my take. Get off your high and mighty. Having an education from UT doesn’t make you special. I can assure you my professional success has nothing to do with being educated at UT, and I have never held myself on higher ground because if it. UT is a cesspool of liberal thinking. Neither one of my kids wanted to attend UT, so I didn’t have to tell them they couldn’t. Diversity sucks, my friend. When will you and your thinking kind understand, diversity will kill this country – we need UNITY. The Congress Ave. bridge bats – that’s guano you smell, not Chanel No. 5. Yes, Austin is more scenic than Lubbock, the Hill Country is pretty nice. But what sets Lubbock apart are the people. Truly the nicest, most genuine Texans hands down.
I have probably attended 15 UT games in Lubbock, and will be there tomorrow – can’t wait. The game is a toss-up in my book. The one factor that could decide this game especially this year – Home Field Advantage – a night game, ranked teams, a frenzied crowd fueled by ESPN GameDay – can’t think of any place I’d rather be. The UT players really won’t understand what is happening until they walk come down the ramp – think Cotton Bowl.
And, Tech does have the best college mascot, period. Yes, longhorns are beautiful, stately creatures. Nothing trumps the Masked Rider on that gorgeous black steed thundering up the field full gallop. You are not a true college football fan of any school if you don’t get goose bumps witnessing this spectacular tradition. Hook ‘em!

Why do you have the tortilla tradition? I’m really curious to know the story behind it. I am from up there and work with a lady that went to school @ Tech and even she doesn’t know why. I’ve been trying to google it with no success. Can someone please help? It’s driving me crazy!

I was raised in west Texas. I have lived in Dallas for 20+ years. West Texas people are the best……however, as a UT fan attending games in Lubbock, you will be treated like crap. I have been to four UT games in Lubbock and it’s always the same story. Very poor sportsmanship. Does anybody have a theory on this?

This sure doesn’t speak very well for the educational integrity of Texas Tech. Are spelling and grammar not prerequisites for attending college in Lubbock? Or defending it??

Wonder, if you like Austin so much, why don’t you stay there. I’m sure nobody in Lubbock would miss you. Wake-up Austin is not the best city in Texas. There’s nothing there I’d be interested in. Try Dallas. That’s the best city in Texas. I guess your brain is fogged up by all the pot smoking that goes on at UT. Remember Ricky Williams and Cedric Benson. Smackin Mack lets the football team do whatever they want. They can be in jail one night and play a game the next day. Coach Leach doesn’t put up with that sort of crap. You mess up, you’re gone. Win or loose, I wouldn’t trade any university for Tech. So, tuck your tail and stay in your beloved Austin.

THe list is just WAY to short. And, don’t worry raider nation, I know you are used to losing games that matter so try not to whine about why you lost the game come Saturday night. HOOK’EM HORNS!!!

thgirbla-it’s spelled Capitol. the Capitol has a dome one it, as opposed to capital, as in capital letter. I really hope you don’t represent spelling capibility in Austin.

I have never set foot upon the capital city of Texas, Austin; therefore, I would not be able to compare it to any other cities in the majestic state of Texas. I have heard wonderful stories about Austin, which have stirred my imagination, yet, this Austin is definitely not a place high on my list to even enter… heck, it’s not even in my top 1000…
I have visited or driven through many beautiful cities/towns in the U.S., primarily throughout the Western United States. I have yet to enter a place that is without flaws.
Besides, Houston, Dallas and San Antonio, Texas is made up of a thousand small towns. What makes each of these towns special, is their rich, small town, annual traditions and the beautiful people who reside therein.
I love them. I love attending the annual harvest festivals, the winter Christmas carolers, the showers that cause the flowers to bloom in the spring and the summer fairs that invite the rodeos, carnivals, artery clogging fried foods and the delicious turkey legs…
After graduating from Texas Tech in ‘03 with a Master’s in Architecture, my wife and I now reside in the beautiful capital city of California. Sacramento…
I am not going to compare Sacramento to Lubbock. Each is unique and marvelous. There are way too many reasons why Lubbock is beautiful. There are at least 250,000 reasons, and growing.
reasons Lubbock is beautiful: The piercing rays of the sun through the sand filled sky, the fierce winds hammering through the streets and alleys of Raiderland and the thunder of the crowd at Jones Stadium on game day.
Austin, Lubbock, Sacramento – each its own beauty… but the only thing that will be more beautiful is a win by the mighty Red Raiders come Saturday…

Typos and spelling mistakes run rampant in this kind of forum, regardless of school affiliation.
I LOVE it when someone bags on another’s spelling, only to misspell a word themselves (see CAPITOL’s “lsit” above).
CAPITOL, you’re right. What they meant to write was “we done gone & grown our own.” That sounds more Texan, don’t it?
I’m a Lubbock boy living in Kentucky. Here people think Texas is dry and ugly. In Austin they think Lubbock is dry and ugly. There’s something special about Lubbock. You either get it or you don’t. I love my hometown! (Westerner alum, class of ‘89)
It’s amazing how much UT apparel there is up here in KY. I wear my scarlet & black with pride, and I’m so eager to don it after a win over those high & mighty Longhorns.
About the poor sportsmanship toward UT fans. I apologize…honestly. There’s no place for it. My theory–it’s a reaction to the perceived arrogance of those same UT fans. Just a guess.
Go, Tech!!

I think that the TTU football team is awesome, in the regard of sportsmanship and their game this year. The fans need to take a lesson from this fine group of men. TTU fans can be very nasty and mean to an opposing team. I grew up in the Lubbock area and it’s really dissapointing when you hear how bad the TTU fans treat opposing teams. Go Longhorns!

I have lived in East Texas, South Texas, Central Texas, and on the High Plains. The big item that makes Lubbock and the High Plains better is the people. The University of Texas has diversity as long as it is not conservative or Christian. I am with a group which hands out Bibles. On the UT campus, we have been cussed out, spit on, and had the Bibles thrown back at us. At Tech, we always been shown respect and welcomed with the exception of a very small minority. I am proud of UT for being #1. But I am more proud of a school who does not get near as many of the top recruits as UT and still gives UT all they want. Guns Up Raiders.

Not everyone is a Christian. Do you want another religion beside Cristianity shoved in your face? Just because you believe in another faith doesn’t mean you’re wrong. That’s the problem with Christians, they think that’s the only way to believe. That’s why people shy away from Christian churches. Religion has always been a reason for war.

I was born in Lubbock, but raised in God’s country (Colorado). If people from Austin think their city is pretty, they should visit Colorado. NO COMPARISON. Texas is not much to look at when you think about it. However, Lubbock does have great people, most of them. Austin has a lot of weird liberal people, it’s too HUMID, who can stand it? Just horrible! And who cares about bats? You want to see beautiful sunsets and deep crystal blue skies, you better be in Colorado. GO TECH!!!!!!!!

I left Lubbock, as did you, but I would never disrespect a town as you have bellowed. You should be ashammed of yourself. Now, go get your UT helmet and I’ll grab my double-T, let’s play like old.

Great post raider n cali!!!!!!
It cracks me up when people say Lubbock is dry and act like it’s an insult. I like to have a beer or two as much as anyone, but living in a dry city is not a bad thing. How is that a bad thing? That is like saying your city is the capitol, or you host the state tournament, and expecting someone to take that personal.

Lubbock is the biggest pile of crap city, and I truly feel sorry for people who have not had a chance to get out of there yet. I lived there for 20 years until I decided to get out of that dreadful place. Lubbock is full of ultra conservatives, racists, drunks, spoiled frat kids, and dirt. Lots of it. Being an über-retirement center with nothing to do, lubbock’s poor geographical location and lack of culture, diversity in the people, and the overal lrudeness of the people makes it one of the worst places to live or start a family. I went to Texas tech for a year, where I discovered about 80% of my surrounding students were all there for the partying and nothing else. All being spoiled by their daddies paying tuition, and then complained when they didn’t get an A handed to them. I have never seen such rude sportsmanship in my life, with students wearing t-shirts saying “tuck fexas” and chanting offending things in the crowds over live television. Lubbock is one of the worst places on this earth.

So many replies and my statement was obviously been misrepresented. First lets go with the fact I enjoy all Texas people. I would take side with an Aggie or RedRaider fan anyday over someone from OU, SEC school, or some other college opponent. My statements are simply this. Lubbock is not the #1 place to live in Texas and is certainly not better than Austin. That is the name of the article correct?
This is a simple comment board. 7 days from now, people won’t even be able to find this url page. So you can write out your points, but it will not change my statement views or the views of many people I come across in the Texas triangle of cities. I welcome your comments, but just because we disagree, does not instantly mean either of us are correct. It is a statement of opinion.
Lets go with some sold facts that can not be disputed. Austin is #2 fastest growth city in population in the nation. Austin is considered the live music capitol of the country. There is no true bar to measure that but by the many concert venues, SWSW festival, and Austin City Limits music festival having attendance over 50k, we win the music argument. If you dislike the Austin type of music, fair enough. As far as numbers and revenue go, we got that covered. Texas added an endzone to their football stadium making capacity to 98,000. To bash ticket prices, well, pure economics answers that dispute. Someone has to pay to keep the lights on. Ticket prices are comparable to any top 10 football program like Florida, USC or Ohio St. Plus the simple supply & demand curve that always influence ticket prices.
On the political statement, I will say again. Comparing any city to say it leans to one political side opposed of the other is silly.
Also to compare the academics of each school is not needed. Both schools have excellent under grad programs and both have graduate medical schools
If you believe all Texas fans are bad people, then you are certainly misguided. Any large fan base of a school will have some wild, mean, and sometimes disrespectful fans. That is pure law of averages. To apply that to all Texas fans is a joke. Passionate? sure. Loud? Of course. The entire student body can not be associated with a negative experience you had with one Texas fan.
Being a dry county is an insult. It is saying you have less freedoms in one particular county opposed to all the rest. I guess that’s why there is so many dry counties nationwide. Oh yeah, of course not.
The companies that operate in Austin to compared in Lubbock is an easy win. No need to further hit that topic.
The religion comment. You are a slippery slope there when pulling that card. I will say Austin being diverse has people of all religions. That is a good quality, not a bad one.
To close, I feel Austin is a better city. 330 miles NW the people in Lubbock disagree with me saying they rather live out there any day. Well many times you can figure out how much people enjoy a city by its population and development growth, It is pretty much skyrocketing here in this city. So in that respect, more people are moving to Austin rather Lubbock. There are multiple factors that come to that answer.
I will close my stating again, Austin is the best city in Texas and better than Lubbock. Sunday morning is going to be a hard day for Texas Tech fan to wake up to realize they were beat on their own home field.

As a Lubbock born Tech grad who has lived in or near Austin for the past 23 years I can give you one great reason Lubbock is superior to the People’s Republic of Austin.
Tech offers more than the two degree plans ut seems to provide, socialism and sodomy.

I grew up in Lubbock and now live in Austin. This list is bad. There are goods & bads to both places. Austin has more to do and is closer to places that HAVE things to do. (River Tubing, Amusement Parks, Sea World, The beach etc) Oh, and don’t forget the handful of lakes within 30 minutes from Austin.
Lubbock is more conservative and just easier to get around than Austin. That’s a plus.
Funny, I hear people that live in and around Lubbock say things about how Lubbock isn’t great and wish they didn’t live there. THEN, when something like this happens and Tech makes a major victory, suddenly everyone LOVES Lubbock.
HOOK’EM! We’re not out yet my friends.
