Kansas notebook: Tech’s Crabtree could catch fire this time

By Tully Corcoran | The Capital-Journal

LAWRENCE — It is kind of difficult to be overshadowed when you have 12 catches for 269 yards and two touchdowns, which is what happened to Kansas receiver Dezmon Briscoe last Saturday, when Oklahoma not only won the game, but produced a receiver that had 12 catches for 191 yards.

The heck of it is, it’s not a stretch to imagine something like that happening again this week with Texas Tech receiver Michael Crabtree, who has 51 catches for 724 yards and 12 touchdowns this season.

Briscoe is looking forward to it.

“Of course, (Crabtree) is one of the premier receivers in the Big 12,” Briscoe said. “For him to come in and see what he does and for me to try to match his game, it should be fun.”

Depending on which reports you believe, Briscoe and Crabtree were nearly teammates. Crabtree had an offer from Kansas. He visited Lawrence a week before Briscoe did and chose Texas Tech a week before Briscoe chose KU.

Turns out, both schools ended up satisfied with their receiving corps, both players started as freshmen and both are satisfied with the number of passes coming their way.

Briscoe has 43 catches for 700 yards and eight touchdowns this season. He is two touchdowns away from tying the school record of 17 held by Willie Vaughn and Bruce Adams and two from tying Marcus Henry’s single-season receiving TDs record of 10.

Remarkably, a big reason for Briscoe’s big day was that Oklahoma chose to cover him one-on-one in many situations, particularly when Kansas bunched three receivers to one side, as it did on Briscoe’s 67-yard touchdown catch.

“We had called a play to the three-receiver side and Briscoe’s man fell down,” offensive coordinator Ed Warinner said. “He wasn’t even the primary receiver.”

Briscoe would welcome man coverage from now on.

“For any receiver, when you go out there and it’s man-to-man, you know that you can beat them,” he said.

Sounds like this game may be a shootout… Haha, hopefully not as close as the Oklahoma State game last year though… Hopefully Ruffin remembers what happened to the previous defensive coordinator after that game…. We need a vastly improved secondary after the A&M game…. But Tech has the talent, they just need to make the plays.

What I wouldn’t give to have a Dwayne Slay in the secondary this year. I have YET to see someone put a really big hit on a receiver. I agree… the pass defense needs to improve aftwer their showing these past 2 weeks. As a former football coach myself, it seemed as if the safeties and corners were playing timid.

Instead, I see people out of position… safeties letting people get behind them, and a secondary that stands around hoping someone else will make the hit. Last week, I saw 2 defensive players WATCH McBath run down a receiver from behind, and struggle to take him down. SUCK IT UP!!! PLAY WITH COURAGE!!!

    Amen LJE.
This defensive secondary is worse than last year and it’s supposed to be better. Linebackers are showing a little improvement but the D-Line is the only positive with this defense so far. This will need to be fixed moving forward as KU has some burners and wants this game just as bad as Tech.

This should be a great game. I think these teams are evenly matched talent-wise and both teams probably view this as a MUST WIN game because….well……look at the rest of their schedules! Let’s just say it doesn’t get any easier.

I’ll be at the game. It’s Homecoming week in Lawrence. Too bad it’s an 11AM kickoff. Anybody got a good Bloody Mary recipe?

Good luck Tech and Rock Chalk Jayhawk!
