Tech escapes near upset by Nebraska

By Don Williams | AVALANCHE-JOURNAL
Nebraska’s plan for beating Texas Tech – play a relentless game of keep-away – nearly netted a big upset. The Cornhuskers threw a big scare into the Red Raiders, if nothing else.

Stunned at needing overtime against a three-touchdown underdog, No. 7 Tech used a screen pass to Baron Batch, a 1-yard touchdown by Eric Morris and a game-ending interception from Jamar Wall to outlast Nebraska 37-31 Saturday before a homecoming crowd of 53,449 at Jones AT&T Stadium.

Texas Tech's Eric Morris scores on a 1-yard run in overtime, putting the Red Raiders ahead 37-31 -- a lead they kept after a missed extra point and Jamar Wall's interception.

By mixing runs with play-action passes and rarely making a mistake, Nebraska (3-3, 0-2 in the Big 12 Conference) rolled up 29 first downs and kept Tech’s weapons in the silo as much as possible.

“That’s the game plan a lot of teams have against us,” said Tech quarterback Graham Harrell, who completed 80 percent but had only 25 pass attempts, his fewest in 32 career starts. “Nebraska today probably did it better than anyone I’ve seen since I’ve been here. I don’t know if I’ve ever felt like that.”

Tech (6-0, 2-0) ran only 48 plays; the school record low is 46 in a 1997 loss at Nebraska. The Raiders made the most of their scarce plays, fashioning four scoring drives of at least 70 yards.

“Offensively, we had huge chunks, but had to sit there for a long time,” Tech coach Mike Leach said. “I was proud of our guys for sitting there, but still being ready to play. I don’t know if somebody went over and told them jokes or had a video game. But I thought they kept responding.”

It’s a good thing, because as it turned out, Tech’s 24-10 lead after three quarters wasn’t safe.

Nebraska quarterback Joe Ganz completed 12 of 13 passes in the fourth period, directing drives of 73, 68 and 79 yards that all ended in touchdowns. A 17-yard pass to Todd Peterson with 29 seconds left sent it to overtime tied at 31, and the Raiders won it from there.

Tech went first in OT, and Batch carried a screen pass 24 yards down to the 1. A delay-of-game penalty moved the Raiders back, but on third-and-goal from the 1, Morris took a sweep handoff and went in standing up behind a wall of blocks from Marlon Winn, Tramain Swindall and Shannon Woods.

Even then, the suspense built. Donnie Carona’s extra-point try was partially blocked. With a six-point lead, Tech’s undefeated record was in jeopardy unless the defense kept the Huskers out of the end zone. They did.

Wall’s pickoff was the first time in five possessions that Nebraska failed to score, and it set off a spirited celebration.

“Obviously, we’re pretty excited,” Harrell said. “At the same time, we know we’re pretty lucky to come out with a win.”

I believe everyone watching the game Saturday knew Nebraska was going to fake the field goal but the Tech coaching staff. Who gives a rat’s rear if we give up 3! Chances of blocking it are slim besides we are trading 3’s for 6’s. I wish it was for 7’s but eveidently that is not to be.

Everyone except the refs seemed to know that was a homer spot on the 4th and 2, homer calls on the back to back holding penalties, blatant pass interference on NUs first O play in OT which would’ve been game over NU, Amazing no calls on TTs holding on 3 of their huge plays, including the 4 and 4 on the TT 36 (TT the most penalized school in the nation only getting 2 flags, c’mon). I know, everyone will say I’m crying sour grapes, which I normally say about ref whining too, but frankly you guys were beat. Anyway, good game, congrats on the win and good luck with the rest of your season. Look forward to another barn burner in Lincoln next year. Bring the friends and family and we’ll show you a good time.

I’m not sure what game bigredblitz was watching. The back to back holding calls on NU WERE holding calls. On Tech’s 4th and 4 play, Nebraska jumped in the neutral zone and it wasn’t called. Also, the personal foul penalty on Brandon Williams was a joke and on the next to last play of regulation, Michael Crabtree was tackled by the Nebraska defender who never even looked at the ball and no pass interference was called. So that is what actually happened in the game bigredblitz. As for your comment that we were beat, that might be true, if we lost the game…but we didn’t.

I drove 10 hours down to Lubbock. We arrived 8am. We drove 10 hours straight back arrived back, getting back at 5am Sunday morning. The drive was worth that game. We had a great time and the TT people were great (except on drunk college kid). The campus was nice. It was refreshing to see fans that acted with class most of the time. That’s what makes college football so GREAT!!!

As far as the game, bad calls happen every game. Each team will have their opinion. It’s part of the game and since less to talk about. I could bring up the time that the TT player through a punch at our D Lineman but it didn’t get called so it is mute. I am sure they missed calls against us also. Great game TT and we will see you in Lincoln. If you can get tickets come up and see a game in Lincoln. I loved watching it in Lubbock.

    1. Any ref can call holding on any given play, period. The fact that there were two called on back-to-back plays on the same player, is ridiculous. I watched the replays, and while technically 65 was holding, it was no worse than any other O-lineman at any other point in the game. Why then were those calls made at that point in the game? Who knows, who cares. They were ticky-tack calls that may have cost NU the game…

    2. The personal foul on TTU was a late hit. No later than any other, but late. Again, I think the refs are being very capricious this year on when and what they call. Perhaps their directions on what to call have been changed, and they are not sure what to call and when. The non-call on Crabtree right before OT was a tough one, but it looked to me on replay that NU’s defender hit the ball first. The non-call on Swift was very blatant, but the only thing I can say there is that maybe the ref thought the ball was uncatchable.

    3. NU pushed TTU to the very edge. The bottom line is that NU has forgotten how to win the big game, and TTU is beginning to get a grip on it. TTU executed when they needed to, and NU could not in OT.

Overall, a great game for both sides. A confidence building win for TTU, and a heart-wrenching loss for NU. Both teams can learn and build from it. Pointing the fingers at the refs does noone any good.

I see Red People is correct in his comments. A penalty can be called on pretty much every play. Refs don’t call them if they don’t think it effects the play. Games would last 6-7 hours if they called everything.

Nebraska has lost their winning ways but Polini has them pointed in the right direction. Give it time Husker fans.

As for the Red Raiders…The defensive coaches need to go. It is time to bring in a new staff. The bend don’t break theory does not work against good teams. You might as well just let the opposing teams start in the Red Zone. I will exempt Simmons since he was not part of the previous years. The rest were. The did not do their jobs under Setinstich either and should have been shown the door with him.

I know Leach believes bringing a coach in from outside means the Defense will get worse for a few years before it gets better. That is a bunch of crap! How did Tech do Setinstich’s first, second and third years? The improved every year starting out better then we were the year before he arrived. Ruffin is not the answer…he has been part of the problem all these years. Time to clean the slate and start new.

Meyers…enough is enough! Leach won’t do it…so you will have to force the issue. Saturday was the biggest day in recruiting history for Tech with four, 4 star, high school recruits in town and all they saw was an embarrassment on defense. Teams just walk down the field 5 and 10 yards a pop against Tech. Why would anyone want to be part of that! This is the same crap we have seen since Leach started his tenure at Tech. You have been trying so hard to improve the sports complexes and teams yet for years the fans have been gripping about that defense and it is still the same. Much better athletes but the same level and style of play. That means only one thing…coaching. It is time for a “Division I” caliber defensive coach. Ruffin may be a great guy and the kids may love him but he has not done the job since he first came here. I have made this statement for several years now…”NO MORE EXCUSES!” I am sure that is all that was given after the Nebraska game. Enough is enough. Time for a change!

This was an ugly win. But a “W” is a “W” no mater what. I was amazed that even with less than half the time of possession, the Tech O had nearly as many total yards as Nebraska. As for the D, I’m glad Leach ditched Coach Sit-n-spin last year, but McNeill hasn’t done any better despite the lavish praise that FSN sportscasters gave him last night on the air. I kept asking, “What game are they watching?” With the exception of a few key plays and players, the overall D looked, no, performed super soft. They let everything come to them and the ends and linebackers don’t know how to string out the outside game or handle a simple reach block. Unless they make changes, Tech can’t handle any game after A&M.

Good game Red Raiders. I am a longtime NU fan and was very proud how our boys played in TT country. I am a little surprised at how some from both teams complained about the refs, I thought all in all the refs did fine. NU had a chance to win and basically did not get it done. We with Husker Nation wish you the best and hope you go far. Go Big Red !!!

I am a big Red Raider fan, and a huge fan of Coach Leach. However, as one fan above mentioned, when everyone in the stadium knew that the fake field goal was in order (made no sense at the time and point differential to go for 3) and the players on the field acted surprised that it was a fake, then THAT mistake is on the coaches…….IF Leach is a million dollar coach, then everyone else in Lubbock is underpaid.

If Tech had a defense they would be a legitimate top ranked team, possibly even #1 or #2. Unfortunately, their current ranking is an absolute farse. If the coaches don’t think that UT, OU and OSU won’t watch the films of the Nebraska offensive show, they’re crazy. Without some quick changes with the defense, I see 2 or 3 losses coming.

I could not believe that Tech gave up a touchdown on the fake field goal. Three points did them no good and did not hurt us. We have players who have played football for years and coaches who have coached longer than that. All that had to be done was not jump offside, don’t rough the kicker, and watch the kicker, holder and two outside people. It was a no brainer and we let it happen. It was inexcusable. No other play in the game was so bad and we had lots of bad plays. Junior high teams should not make a mistake like that.

Hats off to the classy Husker fans who visited this site. You reinforce your reputation for being quality people. Hopefully this near-win will help your program’s confidence.

I’m concerned about my Raiders. Maybe this will light a fire under our boys to prepare better and play harder. Meanwhile, I’ll enjoy 6-0 and #5 in the nation!

John they didn’t give up a touchdown on the fake field goal. It was just a first down they gave up.

It was fourth and seven, with 12:37 left in the fourth quarter…there weren’t too many people thinking they had to fake it at that point.

Game plans are what they are …extensions of the coach…the players have to git r done….you can raise all the ???? from the TV
or the PC… bottom line is getting the W…even Mike gave props to NU for their game plan …old school theory.. NU’s O was their D
vs. Tech…Red Raiders did what they had to do when they had to do it….so get ready for the AGGIES…different team and different
    game plan…adapt + adjust = 7-0

This was a good win for the Raiders. Not perfect, but good. Hat’s off to the Nebraska Conrnhuskers. They came in with a good game plan and executed it extremely well. I think Pellini and company are going to bring them back into the mix of top programs in the country. Probably not as dominating as the old days, but almost nobody does that anymore. I will not look forward to playing them in Lincoln next year.
As for the Raiders, we get away with the W. But no one should come away from this one without recognizing we have a lot of things to work on and that you have to go out and work and prove things on the field every week. Actually, that’s the way I like it. Go Raiders!

Tech won a game they would have lost any other recent year. That’s good. They’re learning how to be the favorite.

The way we won kept us from JUMPING up in the polls. That’s good too. If we go into the next game ranked third, I think the kid’s heads spin and we lose. Now they can have a little chip on their shoulders.

I know we’re talking about kids… but why doesn’t anyone mention the elephant in the room? Is our kicker really the best kicking student on campus? I’m not sure we shouldn’t go for two every time….. are drop kicks legal? (just showed my age)

    GO TECH

I can’t agree more with John on the point of the fake FG. Giving up 3 points there was harmless. I wasn’t even watching the game but was listening on the radio. When they said the FG unit was coming out, I told others I was with that it would probably be a fake, and I am certainly no expert. The defense should have been to prevent the fake and give the Huskers the 3 points.

As for the defense, it is the job of the coaches to make adjustments throughout the game. Either none were made, or the players did not execute them. Maybe it’s some of both, but like Dexter said, the defense was really exposed, and teams much better than Nebraska are ahead on the schedule. Some major changes will need to be made or the rest of the season could get ugly. Having said that, I’m the eternal optimist and still have hope that this season will be special.

I agree, I agree horrible D. Yes, expectations are and should be high. Linebacker play gets an F. Ruffin needs to stop pushing Duncan in the press and push him on the field. Get a defensive gameplan and fpllow it. Earn respect as a defensive unit and Big 12 Championships will follow. This all starts with the linebackers.

Good luck to the Huskers and see you next year in Lincoln!!! GO TECH!!!
