Cornerbacks update
Texas Tech cornerbacks coach Brian Mitchell played Brent Nickerson and L.A. Reed about equally in last week’s victory at Kansas State. Mitchell said Nickerson probably will make his sixth straight start on Saturday.
“This is a new scheme for him this week versus Nebraska’s scheme,’’ Mitchell said. “That’s something (Reed’s) never seen. It depends on how much he can retain and how much he can make applicable to what we’re doing. But Brent Nickerson has seen this scheme before and he has a good feel for it, so he’s probably going to start again this week.’’
Though Kansas State is averaging 43 points and Nebraska is averaging 33, Mitchell said the Cornhuskers’ offense is more complex. They involve the running backs, tight ends and wide receivers in the passing game and use more pre-snap motion than a lot of teams.
Mitchell said K-State used mostly two personnel groups against Tech, whereas the Raiders think they could see seven or eight personnel groupings from Nebraska.
Old home week
Last week’s trip to Kansas State was a fun one for Tech director of football operations Tommy McVay, who was a Kansas high school coach for 13 years and a Kansas State assistant from 1983-85.
“It was like a family reunion up there,’’ he said.
McVay reconnected with K-State broadcaster Stan Weber, who was a Wildcats’ quarterback from 1980-84. Wildcats punter D.J. Fulhage is a son of Scott Fulhage, the Wildcats’ punter from 1981-84. McVay said he also visited with a couple of men whose sons played for him at Protection (Kan.) High School, where he coached from 1970-73.
“They drove 41/2 hours to see me,’’ McVay said.
In brief
College of the Canyons (Calif.) DE Jonathan Hollins changed his oral commitment from Texas Tech to Tennessee on Monday, according to the Rivals.com recruiting service. … Tech S Daniel Charbonnet, who appeared to be shaken up late in Saturday’s game at Kansas State, was back practicing Tuesday. CB Pete Richardson (hamstring) also has returned to workouts.
