Tech men’s basketball lands guard
While keeping one eye on the present, Mike Davis was in Lubbock this weekend thinking about his future.
The Houston product gave the Texas Tech men’s basketball team an oral commitment during a visit on Saturday, but he spent part of the time on the phone with his family making sure they were out of harm’s way from Hurricane Ike.
“I talked to my family a couple of times,” Davis said Saturday as he watched the Red Raiders conduct offseason workouts four players at a time. “There was some damage to the house, the garage caved in and the roof needs fixing. There were some spots where water was coming down from the ceiling and like most people they didn’t have electricity. The main thing, though, is they are OK.”
Davis, a 6-foot-3 guard who played last year at St. Pius X (TAPPS 6A Final Four last year) but will finish out his high school career at Wheatley (Class 4A state semifinalist last year), is the second prospect landed by head coach Pat Knight for the 2009-10 season. Davis joins Clovis, N.M., forward Jaye Crockett, who gave the Red Raiders his oral commitment in May.
Davis chose Tech over San Diego, Colorado State, Stephen F. Austin and the Naval Academy. He said each school has offered him a scholarship.
Davis said he took visits to San Diego and Annapolis, and chose Tech even though his father has a military background.
“It’s close to home and my parents will get to see a lot of the games,” Davis said. “I like the playing style of Tech. It’s similar to what I played on my AAU team. They like to move the ball in transition and get up the floor, but if it’s not there, pull it out and go into the motion offense.”
Question: What happened to Ricardo De Bem? Did he not recover from the ankle injury? I noticed he is not on the roster for the 2008-2009 season.
