Nickerson gets cornerback nod

Brent Nickerson on Thursday was named Texas Tech’s starter at right cornerback, taking the place of injured L.A. Reed.

Nickerson, a 6-foot, 195-pound junior, and LaRon Moore, a 5-9, 200-pound sophomore, have alternated with the first team since Reed got hurt in practice last week.

“He’s earned the right to step up,” Mitchell said. “It’s his turn. He’s a sharp kid. He’s technically sound. I have all the faith in the world he’s going to do a good job, because he’s a student of the game. If there’s one word to describe him, it’s disciplined.’ He’s a very disciplined individual.”

Mitchell said Moore and junior Pete Richardson are the top backups to starters Jamar Wall and Nickerson.

The team opens the season at 6 p.m. Saturday, hosting Eastern Washington.

Center a game-time decision

Offensive line coach Matt Moore said he’s not going to say before game day whether Stephen Hamby or Shawn Byrnes will start at center.

“They’re both going to be doing this,” he said after Thursday’s workout, imitating a panting dog.

Moore said he hasn’t given the players a clue either, because he’s given them equal work and equal time with the first team.

“They’re both playing so well,” Moore said, “we’re not going to go wrong either way.”
